Book Sentimental Comedy

Download or read book Sentimental Comedy written by Frank Hale Ellis and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sentimental comedy became a distinctive dramatic form on the London stage in the eighteenth century, featuring a complex blend of humour and pathos. Frank Ellis's authoritative study of the genre expounds a theory of sentimental comedy derived from detailed knowledge of a comprehensive range of plays in this period. Women, the lower classes, money and the past are shown to be typical objects of sentimental attitudes, which are not always merely comic, but also potentially indicative of social revolutions such as the growing sympathy towards negro slaves. The practice of sentimental comedy is illustrated by detailed analysis of sentimental attitudes in ten popular plays from 1696 to 1793. An appendix comprises the texts of The School for Lovers by William Whitehead (1762) and Elizabeth Inchbald's Every One Has His Fault (1793). This major study, providing a wealth of fascinating detail about eighteenth-century performance and stage production, will also appeal to scholars interested in revising the current understanding of sentimentalism.

Book The secret life of romantic comedy

Download or read book The secret life of romantic comedy written by Celestino Deleyto and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The secret life of romantic comedy offers a new approach to one of the most popular and resilient genres in the history of Hollywood. Steering away from the rigidity and ideological determinism of traditional accounts of the genre, this book advocates a more flexible theory, which allows the student to explore the presence of the genre in unexpected places, extending the concept to encompass films that are not usually considered romantic comedies. Combining theory with detailed analyses of a selection of films, including To Be or Not to Be (1942), Rear Window (1954), Kiss Me Stupid (1964), Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) and Before Sunset (2004), the book aims to provide a practical framework for the exploration of a key area of contemporary experience – intimate matters – through one of its most powerful filmic representations: the genre of romantic comedy. Original and entertaining, The secret life of romantic comedy is perfect for students and academics of film and film genre.

Book Dickens and the Sentimental Tradition

Download or read book Dickens and the Sentimental Tradition written by Valerie Purton and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Dickens and the Sentimental Tradition’ is a timely study of the ‘sentimental’ in Dickens’s novels, which places them in the context of the tradition of Fielding, Richardson, Sterne, Goldsmith, Sheridan and Lamb. This study re-evaluates Dickens’s presentation of emotion – first within the eighteenth-century tradition and then within the dissimilar nineteenth-century tradition – as part of a complex literary heritage that enables him to critique nineteenth-century society. The book sheds light on the construction of feelings and of the ‘good heart’, ideas which resonate with current critical debates about literary ‘affect’. Sentimentalism, as the text demonstrates, is crucial to understanding fully the achievement of Dickens and his contemporaries.

Book Speculative Enterprise

Download or read book Speculative Enterprise written by Mattie Burkert and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2021-05-07 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the 1688 revolution, England’s transition to financial capitalism accelerated dramatically. Londoners witnessed the rise of credit-based currencies, securities markets, speculative bubbles, insurance schemes, and lotteries. Many understood these phenomena in terms shaped by their experience with another risky venture at the heart of London life: the public theater. Speculative Enterprise traces the links these observers drew between the operations of Drury Lane and Exchange Alley, including their hypercommercialism, dependence on collective opinion, and accessibility to people of different classes and genders. Mattie Burkert identifies a discursive "theater-finance nexus" at work in plays by Colley Cibber, Richard Steele, and Susanna Centlivre as well as in the vibrant eighteenth-century media landscape. As Burkert demonstrates, the stock market and the entertainment industry were recognized as deeply interconnected institutions that, when considered together, illuminated the nature of the public more broadly and gave rise to new modes of publicity and resistance. In telling this story, Speculative Enterprise combines methods from literary studies, theater and performance history, media theory, and work on print and material culture to provide a fresh understanding of the centrality of theater to public life in eighteenth-century London.
