Among the vertebrates, fishes are a highly successful group, both in number of species and in the adaptive radiation of forms. For instance, 415 teleost families are now recognised (GREENWOOD, ROSEN, WEITZMANN and MYERS, 1966), and the 20,000 odd fish species mentioned in text-books have been by far out numbered. The fish retina also shows considerable variations, in conformity with the extreme morphological diversification reached by piscine forms, in colonising all conceivable aquatic habitats and developing a wide spectrum of life habits. We intend to illustrate this in the present Atlas, a collection of short texts and photomicrographs of the retina from about one hundred fish families. This Atlas is intended also to fulfil other purposes. One of them is to present in a phylogenetic order the rather scattered data on fish retinal structure, with appropriate illustrative material; another is to assist the visual physiologist or biochemist in his search for a retina with particular morpholog ical features compatible with his specific requirements. Well into the twentieth century these groups warred over the origins of our capacity to perceive space, over the retinal mechanisms that mediate color sensations, and over the role of mind, experience, and inference in vision. Here R. Steven Turner explores the impassioned exchanges of those rival schools, both to illuminate the clash of theory and to explore the larger role of controversy in the development of science. Controversy, he suggests, is constitutive of scientific change, and he uses the Helmholtz-Hering dispute to illustrate how polemics and tacit negotiation shape evolving theoretical stances. It is a continuation of the two preceding parts on the photochemistry and the physiology of the eye, and forms a bridge from them to the fourth part on visual psychophysics. These fields have all developed as independent speciali ties and need integrating with each other. The processing of visual information in the brain cannot be understood without some knowledge of the preceding mechanisms in the photoreceptor organs. There are two fundamental reasons, ontogenetic and functional, why this is so: 1) the retina of the vertebrate eye has developed from a specialized part of the brain; 2) in processing their data the eyes follow physiological principles similar to the visual brain centres. Peripheral and central functions should also be discussed in context with their final synthesis in subjective experience, i. e. visual perception. Microphysiology and ultramicroscopy have brought new insights into the neuronal basis of vision. These investigations began in the periphery: HARTLINE'S pioneering experiments on single visual elements of Limulus in 1932 started a successful period of neuronal recordings which ascended from the retina to the highest centres in the visual brain. In the last two decades modern electron microscopic techniques and photochemical investigations of single photoreceptors further contributed to vision research.
