Download or read book Origin and Mechanisms of Hallucinations written by Wolfram Keup and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hallucinations, a natural phenomenon as old as mankind, have a surprisingly wide range. They appear under the most diversified conditions, in the "normal" psyche as well as in severe chronic mental derangement. As a symptom, hallucinations are a potential part of a variety of pathological conditions in almost all kinds of psychotic behavior. In addition, lately, various psychological and sociological circumstances seem to favor widespread use and abuse of hallucinogens, substances able to produce hallucinations in the normal brain. They not rarely lead to serious psychopatho logy such as toxic, and mobilized or aggravated endogenous psycho ses. While such development adds to our scientific knowledge, it also contributes to our current social troubles. Neurologists and neuro-surgeons, psychiatrists, psychologists and other specialized researchers constantly have been dealing with the phenomenon, its roots and branches, and yet, its primary mechanisms are largely un known. However, investigators of hallucinations now seem to enter common ground on which meaningful discussions and joint approaches become feasible and more promising. We have come a long way from the Latin term "hallucinari", meaning to talk nonsense, to be absent-minded, to the modern con cept of "hallucinations". While the Latin word was descriptive of what may be due to hallucinations, the modern concept defines hal lucinations as subjective experiences that are consequences of men tal processes, sometimes fulfilling a purpose in the individual's mental life.

Download or read book Man in Isolation and Confinement written by John E. Rasmussen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on those special circumstances in which men (alone or in groups) are isolated or confined for periods of time long enough to affect the way in which they think and behave. Active research in these phenomena initially grew out of a concern about prisoners of war in Korea and the presumed effects of "brainwashing," but this interest has been augmented by the technological advances that have allowed men to enter into isolation situations previously unattainable--in outer space, under the sea, on the face of the moon, or in remote places on the earth's surface. For the scientist himself, applications of the knowledge derived from these special situations is obvious. The variety of ways in which the search may be carried on, in both the laboratory and "real-life" situations, is amply illustrated in the approaches as well as the settings for research that are reviewed in this volume. This book represents the first attempt to cover the total spectrum of isolation and confinement in one volume. The chapters are arranged so as to begin with study of the individual, proceed through artificial and natural groups, and conclude with broad ecological and taxonomic considerations. Each chapter of the book has its own unique form; however, they have been planned and written to address a single central theme--that increased understanding of this important social phenomenon depends upon a spectrum of conceptual and methodological strategy, and on a continuing interplay between basic and applied research. The contributors are among the world's recognized experts in the area, and because of its breadth, the book constitutes an unusually complete reference to contemporary research on isolation. The volume has implications for urban planning and for space and undersea programs, and will be useful for teachers and students of applied social and behavioral science.

Download or read book Inside the Black Room written by Jack A. Vernon and published by . This book was released on 2023-06-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s, a new word 'brainwashing' entered the English language. Although its meaning was ambiguous and continued to evolve, it captured both concerns about the uses of psychology in warfare and the imagination of the general public through popular cinema (popular example would be The Manchurian Candidate in 1962) through the years as to how possible it really was to "brainwash" an individual. For many experts, the Cold War brainwashing scare offered an opportunity to engage the public with contemporary psychological theory and research. Originally published in 1963, Inside the Black Room covers a series of experiments specifically dealing with sensory deprivation and its effect on the human subjects involved in the studies. The goal of these studies was to provide practical information on the effects of long-term sensory deprivation on the human condition. At that time at the beginning of the 'space race' it was unknown what impact space travel and long period of solitary confinement would have on the human psyche. A fascinating study that shows through unique experiments how malleable the human psyche is and effect methods like sensory deprivation can have on manipulating that psyche.

Download or read book A Special Hell written by Claudia Malacrida and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using rare interviews with former inmates and workers, institutional documentation, and governmental archives, Claudia Malacrida illuminates the dark history of the treatment of mentally defective children and adults in twentieth-century Alberta. Focusing on the Michener Centre in Red Deer, one of the last such facilities operating in Canada,A Special Hell is a sobering account of the connection between institutionalization and eugenics. Malacrida explains how isolating the Michener Centre's residents from their communities served as a form of passive eugenics that complemented the active eugenics program of the Alberta Eugenics Board. Instead of receiving an education, inmates worked for little or no pay sometimes in homes and businesses in Red Deer under the guise of vocational rehabilitation. The success of this model resulted in huge institutional growth, chronic crowding, and terrible living conditions that included both routine and extraordinary abuse. Combining the powerful testimony of survivors with a detailed analysis of the institutional impulses at work at the Michener Centre,A Special Hell is essential reading for those interested in the disturbing past and troubling future of the institutional treatment of people with disabilities.
