Download or read book Sensorless Electric Drive for Integral Horsepower Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is increasingly playing an important role in electric propulsion systems due to its many advantages over competing technologies. For successful implementation of the PMSM rotor position and speed information are required. A resolver or encoder attached to the shaft of the machine usually provides this information Many applications, however, cannot tolerate the use of the position sensor due to space and weight limitations, reliability concerns, or packaging issues. Thus, there has been an intense interest in the development of a so-called postion sensorless drive, where the PMSM stator itself is used as the rotor position sensor. In this work, a previously developed sensorless electric drive technique fl is applied to a high power permanent magnet machine. The sensorless drive hardware implementation is presented in detail. A set of experiments is used to quantify the performance of the sensorless drive approach under a wide variety of operating conditions, and implementation issues and results are discussed. The developed sensorless electric drive serves as a technology demonstrator for future naval applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development and availability of very high energy permanent magnet materials has contributed to an increased use of the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) in high performance underwater applications. The PMSM offers advantages such as increased efficiency, superior torque to volume and power to volume ratios, and quiet operation. These advantages have resulted in the Navy considering a switch from its present induction motor technology to the PMSM. In order to individually control stator current and angle and thus fully exploit the characteristics of the PMSM, high resolution rotor angle information is required. An encoder or resolver attached to the shaft of the motor normally provides this rotor position information. Such devices add length, size, and inertia to the machine, raise system cost, and present reliability issues in harsh underwater environments. The drawbacks of the rotor position sensor have led to an intense interest in rotor position sensorless operation of the PMSM. This study develops a sensorless electric drive strategy suitable to the PMSM. The proposed sensorless strategy is implemented in hardware and tested on several permanent magnet machine types. The implementation of the sensorless drive is discussed, and the performance of the developed system is evaluated. Experimental results show that the rotor position estimation strategy performs well under various steady state and transient conditions.

Book Traction Control in Electric Vehicles

Download or read book Traction Control in Electric Vehicles written by Tiago Sá and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation sector is one of the biggest industrial sectors nowadays. Since the development of the internal combustion engine and its application to the transportation sector, people are becoming dependent on a more economic and comfortable way of traveling. However, besides all the benefits that combustion engines can provide, the abusive use of fossil fuels, its constant increase of price and recent environmental concerns led to a new form of mobility, supported on a technology already used in the past: the electric motor. Having this in consideration, this book aims at analyzing and discussing the control domain in electric mobility concerning the permanent magnet synchronous motors, in particular an application of a 150kW motor for an electric bus. It is presented the design of the controller that drives the motor, allowing its driving and braking, with the ability to regenerate braking energy for recharging the batteries. Also, the system is capable of working without speed or position sensors.

Book T Source Inverter Based Sensorless Speed Control for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor

Download or read book T Source Inverter Based Sensorless Speed Control for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor written by Dineshkumar Selvam and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) are used commonly in numerous industrial applications, for instance, in mechatronics, vacuum pumps, energy storage flywheels, automotive, centrifugal compressors, and robotics. Nowadays, the sensorless speed control of PMSM is getting more attention, and several studies are progressing because of its low cost and reliable features. Normally, the speed control methods in PMSM are achieved with the help of sensors for position or speed estimation and control. But, these sensors are easily prone to breakage. Also, the flexibility towards parameter variations is poor in the conventional speed control methods. So, a sensorless T-source inverter-based PMSM drive that integrates the Proportional Integral (PI) controller with an adaptive mechanism to cope with the time-varying system parameters is proposed in this article. A sensorless module, namely, a model reference adaptive system (MRAS), is employed to estimate the rotor position of PMSM based on its performance characteristics Simulation results are illustrated to investigate the performance of the proposed method with different speeds under no load and loaded conditions. Moreover, the proposed approach not only minimizes the cost and size of the motor but also maximizes the reliability and accuracy.

Book Sensor and Sensorless Speed Control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Using Extended High gain Observer

Download or read book Sensor and Sensorless Speed Control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Using Extended High gain Observer written by Abdullah Ahmad Alfehaid and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control of the speed as well as shaping the speed transient response of a surface-mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) is achieved using the method of feedback linearization and extended high-gain observer. To recover the performance of feedback linearization, an extended high-gain observer is utilized to estimate both the speed of the motor and the disturbance present in the system. The observer is designed based on a reduced model of the PMSM, which is realized through the application of singular perturbation theory. The motor parameters are assumed uncertain and we only assume knowledge of their nominal values. The external load torque is also assumed to be unknown and time-varying, but bounded. Stability analysis of the output feedback system is given. Experimental results confirm the performance and robustness of the proposed controller. We also compare our proposed control method to the cascaded Proportional Integral (PI) speed controller. Then, we show the extension of this control method to solve the problem of sensorless control of PMSMs. The proposed sensorless control method is a back-emf based control scheme. Therefore, we design a high-gain back-emf observer in the Îł-Îø coordinates. Next, we transform the model of the PMSM to the d-q coordinates, which is performed using the estimated position, and close the loop around the currents with relatively fast PI controllers. After that, we reduce the model of the PMSM and design a third order Q-PLL extended high-gain observer as well as the speed feedback controller. Then, we perform a rigorous stability analysis of the closed loop system. Finally, we show simulation and experimental results to verify performance and robustness of the proposed controller.

Book Sensorless Control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor

Download or read book Sensorless Control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor written by Dhruv Shah and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A solution to the longstanding problem of sensorless control of an electrical machine is provided in this work. That is, the construction of an asymptotically stable controller that regulates the mechanical speed of the motor, measuring only the electrical coordinates. The result is presented for a non-salient permanent magnet synchronous motor perturbed by an unknown constant load torque. The proposed scheme is a fourth order nonlinear observer-based controller that does not rely on-intrinsically nonrobust-operations like open-loop integration of the systems dynamical model nor signal differentiation, and can be easily implemented in real time. The controller is easy to commission, with the tuning gains directly determining the convergence rates of the position, speed and load torque observers. Simulation and experimental results that illustrate the good performance, as well as the robustness to parameter uncertainty, of the scheme are presented. A simulated comparison with a sensorless field-oriented controller, recently proposed in the drives literature, is also carried out. The thesis is closed with some concluding remarks and some potential research topics generated from this work.
