Book Sensitivity of NEXT 100 to Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

Download or read book Sensitivity of NEXT 100 to Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEXT-100 is an electroluminescent high-pressure xenon gas time projection chamber that will search for the neutrinoless double beta (0[nu][beta][beta]) decay of $^$Xe. The detector possesses two features of great value for 0[nu][beta][beta] searches: energy resolution better than 1% FWHM at the Q value of $^$Xe and track reconstruction for the discrimination of signal and background events. This combination results in excellent sensitivity, as discussed in this paper. Material-screening measurements and a detailed Monte Carlo detector simulation predict a background rate for NEXT-100 of at most 4 × 10$^{-4}$ counts keV$^{-1}$ kg$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$. Furthermore, the detector will reach a sensitivity to the 0[nu][beta][beta]-decay half-life of 2.8 × 10$^{25}$ years (90% CL) for an exposure of 100 kg·year, or 6.0 × 10$^{25}$ years after a run of 3 effective years.

Book The Dawn of the LHC Era

Download or read book The Dawn of the LHC Era written by Tao Han and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 773 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains material from the lecture courses conducted at the Theoretical Advanced Study Institute (TASI, Colorado, USA) on high energy physics and cosmology in 2008. Three series of lectures are presented in parallel in the areas of Large Hadron Collider (LHC) phenomenology and experimentation; advanced theoretical topics beyond the standard model; and neutrino oscillation, astroparticle physics and cosmology. The phenomenology lectures cover a broad spectrum of standard research techniques used to interpret present-day and LHC data. The new physics lectures focus on modern speculations about physics beyond the standard model, with an emphasis on supersymmetry, grand unification theories, extra-dimensional theories, and string phenomenology, which may be tested at the LHC. The lecture series on neutrino physics, astroparticle physics and cosmology treats recent developments in neutrino oscillations, theories and searches of dark matter and dark energy, cosmic microwave background radiation, and density perturbation theory. The lectures are of pedagogical nature in presentation, and are accessible to advanced graduate students and researchers in high energy physics and cosmology.

Book Artificial Intelligence For High Energy Physics

Download or read book Artificial Intelligence For High Energy Physics written by Paolo Calafiura and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-01-05 with total page 829 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Higgs boson discovery at the Large Hadron Collider in 2012 relied on boosted decision trees. Since then, high energy physics (HEP) has applied modern machine learning (ML) techniques to all stages of the data analysis pipeline, from raw data processing to statistical analysis. The unique requirements of HEP data analysis, the availability of high-quality simulators, the complexity of the data structures (which rarely are image-like), the control of uncertainties expected from scientific measurements, and the exabyte-scale datasets require the development of HEP-specific ML techniques. While these developments proceed at full speed along many paths, the nineteen reviews in this book offer a self-contained, pedagogical introduction to ML models' real-life applications in HEP, written by some of the foremost experts in their area.

Book Sensitivity of CUORE to Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

Download or read book Sensitivity of CUORE to Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, we study the sensitivity of CUORE, a bolometric double-beta decay experiment under construction at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. Two approaches to the computation of experimental sensitivity are discussed and compared, and the formulas and parameters used in the sensitivity estimates are provided. Assuming a background rate of 10−2 cts/(keV kg y), we find that, after 5 years of live time, CUORE will have a 1 [sigma] sensitivity to the neutrinoless double-beta decay half-life of {caret T{sup 0[nu]}{sub 1/2}}(1[sigma]) = 1.6x 1026 y and thus a potential to probe the effective Majorana neutrino mass down to 41-95 meV; the sensitivity at 1.64[sigma], which corresponds to 90% C.L., will be {caret T{sup 0[nu]}{sub 1/2}(1.64[sigma] }) = 9.5x1025 y. This range is compared with the claim of observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay in 76Ge and the preferred range in the neutrino mass parameter space from oscillation results.

Book Sixty Years of Double Beta Decay

Download or read book Sixty Years of Double Beta Decay written by H. V. Klapdor-Kleingrothaus and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 1324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear double beta decay is one of the most promising tools for probing beyond-the-standard-model physics on beyond-accelerator energy scales. It is already now probing the TeV scale, on which new physics should manifest itself according to theoretical expectations. Only in the early 1980s was it known that double beta decay yields information on the Majorana mass of the exchanged neutrino. At present, the sharpest bound for the electron neutrino mass arises from this process. It is only in the last 10 years that the much more far-reaching potential of double beta decay has been discovered. Today, the potential of double beta decay includes a broad range of topics that are equally relevant to particle physics and astrophysics, such as masses of heavy neutrinos, of sneutrinos, as SUSY models, compositeness, leptoquarks, left-right symmetric models, and tests of Lorentz symmetry and equivalence principle in the neutrino sector. Double beta decay has become indispensable nowadays for solving the problem of the neutrino mass spectrum and the structure of the neutrino mass matrix OCo together with present and future solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillation experiments. Some future double beta experiments (like GENIUS) will be capable to be simultaneously neutrino observatories for double beta decay and low-energy solar neutrinos, and observatories for cold dark matter of ultimate sensitivity. This invaluable book outlines the development of double beta research from its beginnings until its most recent achievements, and also presents the outlook for its highly exciting future. Book Exploring the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay in the Inverted Neutrino Hierarchy with Bolometric Detectors

Download or read book Exploring the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay in the Inverted Neutrino Hierarchy with Bolometric Detectors written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrinoless double beta decay (0nubb) is one of the most sensitive probes for physics beyond the Standard Model, providing unique information on the nature of neutrinos. In this paper we review the status and outlook for bolometric 0[nu][beta][beta] decay searches. We summarize recent advances in background suppression demonstrated using bolometers with simultaneous readout of heat and light signals. We simulate several configurations of a future CUORE-like bolometer array which would utilize these improvements and present the sensitivity reach of a hypothetical next-generation bolometric 0[nu][beta][beta] experiment. We demonstrate that a bolometric experiment with the isotope mass of about 1 ton is capable of reaching the sensitivity to the effective Majorana neutrino mass (
