This book was released on 1962 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The program is designed to aid in determining a more realistic quantity distance relationship for the storage of ordnance explosive material. It is the intent of this project, through an experimental program, to establish a limiting fragment mass vs impact velocity relatationship for the detonation of certain explosives and/or propellants enclosed in cartridge cases of different thicknesses. Tests, Test methods, Velocity, Projectile cases, Storage, Propellants, Detonation, Thickness, Calibration, Tables, SENSITIVITY, Impact shock, Fragmentation. This report discusses the firing of 0.2 oz fragments for velocity calibration and assessment of fragment damage. Receiver charge detonability tests were also fired. No detonations were recorded.

The initial calibration tests, the first test firings into receiver charges, and a preliminary evaluation of results are discussed. (Author).

Book AN EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM TO DETERMINE THE SENSITIVITY OF EXPLOSIVE MATERIALS TO IMPACT BY REGULAR FRAGMENTS

Download or read book AN EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM TO DETERMINE THE SENSITIVITY OF EXPLOSIVE MATERIALS TO IMPACT BY REGULAR FRAGMENTS written by and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental program was conducted to establish the sensitivity of explosives to the impact of regular steel fragments. Non-spinning rectangular fragments of 0.2 to 3.0 ounces were projected by explosive means at velocities both above and below that required for detonation. Velocities were measured by screens and by high speed photography. All data were obtained using either Pentolite or Cyclotol explosives. The results of the tests were compared with a relationship between fragment mass and boundary velocity (below which detonation will not occur) established by Picatinny Arsenal and based on data from small fragment tests. The tests with uncased charges tended to confirm the predicted relationship for all fragment weights fired at Pentolite and for the small and intermediate fragments fired at cyclotol. A modification in the predicted mass velocity relationship may be required to more accurately define the boundary velocity for heavy fragments (3.0 oz) impacting in Cyclotol. These tests demonstrated that with uncased charges the Picatinny Arsenal relationship will tend to be conservative when used to predict boundary velocities for safety purposes.

Book Determination of Fragment Impact Sensitivity Prediction Methods

Download or read book Determination of Fragment Impact Sensitivity Prediction Methods written by Edmund Swider and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A two-part program was conducted that was both analytical and experimental. This report presents an analytical method for studying the mechanisms that lead to the detonation of cased munitions filled with molten explosives when impacted by large concrete fragments, representing failed wall sections. This is a single degree-of-freedom dynamic structural analysis method which makes use of predetermined, nonlinear load-deflection characteristics of the shell casing. In the analysis described, the method was applied to predict the pressure-time history in the molten explosive when subjected to impact. The experimental portion was performed to determine the credibility and accuracy of the predictive pressure-time history. A reasonable comparison between analytical and experimental results was obtained.

Book High Explosive Deonation Threshold Sensitivity Due to Multiple Fragment Impacts

Download or read book High Explosive Deonation Threshold Sensitivity Due to Multiple Fragment Impacts written by J. Chase and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fragments, bullets or projectiles can initiate a detonation in a high explosive (HE). For this to happen certain critical conditions need to be exceeded. For a given explosive, these critical conditions are the projectile velocity, the projectile size and shape, and the projectile material properties. A lot of work has been done in the area of metal shaped charge jets and individual fragments impacting the HE. One major gap in understanding initiation phenomena is the effect of multiple fragment impact. This study shows that multiple fragments can lower the fragment size and the kinetic energy thresholds.

Book Investigation of Explosives Sensitivity to Multiple fragment Impact Track Test E 7380

Download or read book Investigation of Explosives Sensitivity to Multiple fragment Impact Track Test E 7380 written by L. M. Patton and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rocket-powered sled was used to throw collections of fragments at explosive acceptor charges. Of the 13 rounds in this series, five, having a fragment velocity of 750 fps, produced five acceptor detonations; four rounds, at 330 fps, produced no detonations. The presence or absence of detonators in the acceptor charges had little apparent effect upon results. Specific warhead and explosives data relative to this series appear in Confidential Restricted Data report TPR 324, Supplement, NOTS TP 3277. Results of the first series of multifragment impact track tests are reported in NAVWEPS Report 8073, NOTS TP 3090 (Unclassified), dated December 1962.

Book Sensitivity of Cased Charges of Molten and Solid Composition B to Impact by Primary Steel Fragments

Download or read book Sensitivity of Cased Charges of Molten and Solid Composition B to Impact by Primary Steel Fragments written by George Petino (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental program was conducted to establish the sensitivity of cased charges of Composition B, in the molten and solid state, to impact by high velocity steel fragments. Primary fragments having a square cross-sectional area and weighing 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 ounces were propelled at targets by explosive means. Velocity levels were varied between 3,000 and 7,000 fps in order to determine the threshold velocity range required for a detonation. Results of this program indicate that molten Composition B charges are significantly more sensitive to impact than solid charges. In addition, it appears that a relationship exists between the kinetic energy of the fragment, its impact area and the threshold detonation velocity. (Author).
