Book Sensing Collectives

Download or read book Sensing Collectives written by Jan-Peter Voß and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are aesthetics and politics really two different things? The book takes a new look at how they intertwine, by turning from theory to practice. Case studies trace how sensory experiences are created and how collective interests are shaped. They investigate how aesthetics and politics are entangled, both in building and disrupting collective orders, in governance and innovation. This ranges from populist rallies and artistic activism over alternative lifestyles and consumer culture to corporate PR and governmental policies. Authors are academics and artists. The result is a new mapping of the intermingling and co-constitution of aesthetics and politics in engagements with collective orders.

Book Participatory Sensing Opinions and Collective Awareness

Download or read book Participatory Sensing Opinions and Collective Awareness written by Vittorio Loreto and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces and reviews recent advances in the field in a comprehensive and non-technical way by focusing on the potential of emerging citizen-science and social-computation frameworks, coupled with the latest theoretical and modeling tools developed by physicists, mathematicians, computer and social scientists to analyse, interpret and visualize complex data sets. There is overwhelming evidence that the current organisation of our economies and societies is seriously damaging biological ecosystems and human living conditions in the short term, with potentially catastrophic effects in the long term. The need to re-organise the daily activities with the greatest impact – energy consumption, transport, housing – towards a more efficient and sustainable development model has recently been raised in the public debate on several global, environmental issues. Above all, this requires the mismatch between global, societal and individual needs to be addressed. Recent advances in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can trigger important transitions at the individual and collective level to achieve this aim. Based on the findings of the collaborative research network EveryAware the following developments among the emerging ICT technologies are discussed in depth in this volume: • Participatory sensing – where ICT development is pushed to the level where it can support informed action at the hyperlocal scale, providing capabilities for environmental monitoring, data aggregation and mining, as well as information presentation and sharing. • Web gaming, social computing and internet-mediated collaboration – where the Web will continue to acquire the status of an infrastructure for social computing, allowing users’ cognitive abilities to be coordinated in online communities, and steering the collective action towards predefined goals. • Collective awareness and decision-making – where the access to both personal and community data, collected by users, processed with suitable analysis tools, and re-presented in an appropriate format by usable communication interfaces leads to a bottom-up development of collective social strategies.

Book Exploring the Collective Unconscious in the Age of Digital Media

Download or read book Exploring the Collective Unconscious in the Age of Digital Media written by Schafer, Stephen Brock and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades we have witnessed the emergence of a media age of illusion that is based on the principles of physics—the multidimensionality, immateriality, and non-locality of the unified field of energy and information—as a virtual reality. As a result, a new paradigm shift has reframed the cognitive unconscious of individuals and collectives and generated a worldview in which mediated illusion prevails. Exploring the Collective Unconscious in a Digital Age investigates the cognitive significance of an altered mediated reality that appears to have all the dimensions of a dreamscape. This book presents the idea that if the digital media-sphere proves to be structurally and functionally analogous to a dreamscape, the Collective Unconscious researched by Carl Jung and the Cognitive Unconscious researched by George Lakoff are susceptible to research according to the parameters of hard science. This pivotal research-based publication is ideally designed for use by psychologists, theorists, researchers, and graduate-level students studying human cognition and the influence of the digital media revolution.

This 4 volume comprehensive reference work analyzes approaches used for computer simulation and modeling in various fields of chemical sensing and discusses various phenomena important for chemical sensing such as bulk and surface diffusion, adsorption, surface reactions, sintering, conductivity, mass transport, interphase interactions, etc. In this work it will be shown that theoretical modeling and simulation of the processes, being a basic for chemical sensors operation, could provide considerable progress in choosing both optimal materials and optimal configurations of sensing elements for using in chemical sensors. Each simulation and modeling volume in the present series reviews modeling principles and approaches peculiar to specific groups of materials and devices applied for chemical sensing. Volume 3: Solid State Devices covers phenomenological and molecular modelling of processes which control sensing characteristics and parameters of various solid state chemical sensors including surface acoustic wave, MIS, microcantilever, thermoelectric-based devices and sensor array aimed for electronic nose design. Modeling of nanomaterials and nanosystems promising for solid state chemical sensors design is analyzed as well.
