Book excerpt: Institutions of higher education invest significant amounts of money building state-of-the-art campus recreation facilities in an environment where student fees and debt are increasing, while graduation and retention are declining. This contradictory environment places large investments at the forefront of scrutiny by higher education decision makers. However, this thesis supports the need for campus recreation centers on university campuses through recognizing the important role campus recreation centers play in building community and aiding in social integration among students. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of campus recreation in fostering a sense of community and the relationship between that sense of community and student persistence. Utilizing a mixed methods research approach from 141 student surveys at a higher education institution in the mid-Atlantic, results indicate a positive correlation between usage of campus recreation facilities and psychological sense of community in campus recreation student users. Results of this study do not support the notion that a higher psychological sense of community is related to student achievement or student persistence. However, additional research is necessary to further solidify these explore these relationships. The current study supports campus recreation as a critical aspect of the campus environment and a place where students reap a variety of benefits (e.g., physically, mentally, and socially).

Book excerpt: Campus recreation facilities and programs provide various environments and opportunities outside of the classroom for students to socialize, participate in sports, improve their physical fitness, and learn new skills. Existing research has explored the relationship between participation in campus recreation and the social, academic, and physical impacts it has on the lives of students. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to determine if participation in various types of campus recreation held predictive significance regarding year-over-year retention of first year college students at a large, private university. The predictor variables were participation in club sports, intramural sports, outdoor recreation, student activities events, and usage of the on-campus fitness center. Archival data drawn from the university’s database of records provided a sample of 2,857 students for the 2017-2018 academic year, 2,780 students for the 2018-2019 academic year, and 2,742 students for the 2019-2020 academic year. Logistic regressions were conducted at the 95% confidence interval which produced results indicating statistical significance for the full model for all three years. Of the predictor variables, student activities participation displayed significance all three years, intramural sports participation was significant twice, and fitness center usage was significant once. Odds ratios for the predictor variables revealed that four out of five were positively associated with retention for each academic year. The results from this study add to the existing body of literature that explores the relationship between various types of campus recreation and year-over-year retention. Additionally, these results demonstrate a link between social events and year-over-year retention.

Book excerpt: This study explores the relationship between underrepresented and marginalized student college experience and UC San Diego Campus Community Center organizational practice. Retention differences across ethnic, gender, and sexual orientation groups in the higher education sector, and retention and organizational development literature addressing underrepresented and marginalized populations are explored. Using Tinto's (1975, 1993) Longitudinal Model of Student Departure and Wenger's (2002) Communities of Practice organizational analysis, student ideas of comfort and belonging within a research university are examined. Following an embedded, case study design (Yin, 2003) interviews, including photo-elicitation, observations and document review chronicled a six-month period At University of California San Diego's Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender, Women's, and Cross-Cultural Center research sites. The UC San Diego Cross-Cultural, Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender (LGBT), and Women Centers emerged out of historical legacies that left unanswered questions concerning program effectiveness and campus impact. The development of a new organizing construct, the Campus Community Centers, proved important to individual student success. Students were able to find places of personal validation and at the same time connect across historical group boundaries. Findings show that participants engaged with the Campus Community Centers felt a keen sense of belonging and validation from interactions with the sites. Emergent data on engagement, physical setting, relationship building, and meaning making proved salient across all participants. Ultimately, understanding how organizational linkages create student success can align organizational mission and structure to empirical research in the field of retention and student success.

Book excerpt: This is a study examining the interaction between certain doctoral student engagement indicators (peer, institution, curriculum, faculty, spirituality) and student satisfaction. The scope is to understand if student sense of community is a significant moderator to this interaction in order to address the issue of student attrition. It is important to understand these interactions and the influence of sense of community so that institutions of higher education better analyze student commitment. The outcomes of this study may be used as a means to design and implement engagement strategies that are effective in student retention and completion. Doctoral students were invited through email to participate in a Likert survey comprised of multiple scales measuring the key engagement indicators along with sense of community and student satisfaction. The quantitative results show that engagement is a predictor of satisfaction and, in some cases, is significantly moderated by sense of community. This study supports contemporary research conclusions suggesting that both student engagement and academic communities are paramount to student satisfaction which will ultimately lead to higher rates of retention. Recommendations for future research include determining how online students will be better served through engaging academic communities and strategies designed to enhance the engagement experiences.

At Arizona State University (ASU), the goal has been to continually retain first-year students at a 90%+ retention rate. At ASU, two key aspects of the first-year experience have been employed to foster retention. First, ASU has grouped on-campus students so they lived in residential colleges, housing students with others in the same college, to aid retention of first-year students. Second, ASU has required first-year students to take a 101 class, an orientation to ASU resources (library, advising, etc.) and its community (student organizations, clubs, etc.). The residential college living experience has afforded students opportunities to intentionally engage in campus events, connect with other students, and develop a vision for success. The 101 class has provided students with opportunities to learn about resources and community that have enriched their first-year experiences. Together, these two key approaches have offered students pathways to building initial engagement at the institution. The current research study was conducted to examine the ways in which students became engaged during their initial semester at ASU. Student participants in this study all lived in the W. P. Carey (WPC) Residential College Community in Hassayampa Academic Village (HAV) and were enrolled in WPC 101--Student Success in Business. WPC 101 was focused on helping students navigate college and learn about campus resources. In the study, the researcher infused three Engagement Workshops into the WPC 101 curriculum alongside pre-existing assignments to afford students learning opportunities for a richer, deeper exploration and reflection on their first-semester experience. Students participated in a pre- and post-intervention survey, contributed written narratives and reflections, and six students completed individual interviews. Results of the study, particularly the qualitative results, indicated (a) quality of relationships, (b) ASU community, and (c) campus environment emerged as variables that served as the 'roots of engagement' for these first-semester students Thus, the current work extended previous research on engagement by identifying the initial developmental aspects of engagement among first-semester, university students. The discussion included detailed explanations of the results, limitations, implications for research and practice, lessons learned, and conclusions.

Book excerpt: College retention is a primary focus within many institutions of higher education; however, retention efforts have largely been unsuccessful in impacting first-year completion rates and eventual degree attainment. Drawing on research that demonstrates the value of a strong faculty student relationship and an engaging classroom environment, this initiative investigates the potential impact faculty have on first-year student success at two local institutions: a community college and a four-year proprietary institution. Utilizing a scholar-practitioner lens and improvement science methodology to complete a Plan, Do, Study Act (PDSA) cycle, we evaluated the efficacy of an initiative that included professional development for faculty, individual Get to Know You (GTKY) meetings between faculty and students, and strategies for class engagement. The work was carried out during the fall of 2020 as instructors and students dealt with the challenges of COVID-19. The professional development, covering equity, sense of belonging, and the importance of student and faculty relationships, was well received. Overall, faculty and students found value in the GTKY meetings, and there was a weak but positive correlation between GTKY meetings and engagement. These strategies are promising and demonstrate value in a second PDSA cycle with more participants. Recommendations for a second cycle include implementing a shorter study timeline, adding specific engagement activities, and including focus groups. Partnering between different institutions of higher education, utilizing the scholar-practitioner model, and conducting the initiative during the COVID-19 pandemic offered a unique perspective on the improvement science process.

Rhoads examines the experiences of students as they commit themselves to community service during their college years. The author explores how a student's sense of self may be challenged through involvement in the lives of others within the context of community service relationships. Central to his "explorations of the self" is the role "caring" plays as a source of self understanding and identity development. Drawing upon classic symbolic interactionists such as George Herbert Mead as well as contemporary feminists such as Carol Gilligan and Nel Noddings, Rhoads suggests ways in which the self might be reconsidered with an ethic-of-care philosophy at its core. He argues that higher education ought to play a key role in fostering more relational and caring individuals and that community service offers a pedagogical opportunity for encouraging the development of more caring selves. He maintains that as society becomes increasingly complex, diverse, and potentially fragmented, caring becomes a more important facet of one's sense of self than perhaps ever before. It is only through an increasing concern for the other (the essence of caring) that one is able to bridge the relational barriers posed by the postmodern condition.
