Book The New Neighborhood Senior Center

Download or read book The New Neighborhood Senior Center written by Joyce Weil and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-03 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2011, seven thousand American “baby boomers” (those born between 1946 and 1964) turned sixty-five daily. As this largest U.S. generation ages, cities, municipalities, and governments at every level must grapple with the allocation of resources and funding for maintaining the quality of life, health, and standard of living for an aging population. In The New Neighborhood Senior Center, Joyce Weil uses in-depth ethnographic methods to examine a working-class senior center in Queens, New York. She explores the ways in which social structure directly affects the lives of older Americans and traces the role of political, social, and economic institutions and neighborhood processes in the decision to close such centers throughout the city of New York. Many policy makers and gerontologists advocate a concept of “aging in place,” whereby the communities in which these older residents live provide access to resources that foster and maintain their independence. But all “aging in place” is not equal and the success of such efforts depends heavily upon the social class and availability of resources in any given community. Senior centers, expanded in part by funding from federal programs in the 1970s, were designed as focal points in the provision of community-based services. However, for the first wave of “boomers,” the role of these centers has come to be questioned. Declining government support has led to the closings of many centers, even as the remaining centers are beginning to “rebrand” to attract the boomer generation. However, The New Neighborhood Senior Centerdemonstrates the need to balance what the boomers’ want from centers with the needs of frailer or more vulnerable elders who rely on the services of senior centers on a daily basis. Weil challenges readers to consider what changes in social policies are needed to support or supplement senior centers and the functions they serve.

Book Senior Centers in America

Download or read book Senior Centers in America written by John Krout and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1989-11-09 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Senior Centers in America presents the most comprehensive and current examination of this important topic available today. Written by one of the leading researchers in the field, this book presents an exhaustive review of local and national studies to provide a complete and multi-faceted analysis of senior centers. Major topics include: historical development and changes over time, center resources and organizational characteristics, activities and services, factors associated with participation, participant versus non-participant profiles, linkages and focal point functions, policy issues such as effectiveness and serving the frail, and future senior center scenarios. The book is research-based and identifies areas in need of additional investigation. However, it is also targeted to practitioners and policy makers and is intended to assist them in formulating policy and examining issues central to senior center planning and operation, now and in the future. Krout makes a strong case for the importance and necessity of senior centers, and presents a cogent analysis of the issues and challenges they must respond to in an era of resource shortfalls, shifting social and health policies, and a changing elderly population. Readers of this book will gain a greater insight into senior center issues and a heightened sense of the need to explore these issues much more fully in the future. For this reason, it should be read by anyone involved with social services to the elderly.

Book Self Management in Chronic Illness

Download or read book Self Management in Chronic Illness written by Jose Frantz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-management is a term that was used as early as the 1960s when it was applied during the rehabilitation of chronically ill children. Subsequently, self-management was applied as formalized programs for a variety of populations and health issues. In reflecting on self-management, it is important to note that it would be difficult for individuals not to be aware of their specific health behaviors, which could include unhealthy behaviors. As self-management has evolved, essential skills identified include behavioral modeling, decision making, planning, social persuasion, locating, accessing and utilizing resources, assisting individuals to form partnerships with their health care providers and taking action. These are key skills that would benefit health professional educators, clinicians and patients. This book, consisting of three parts, provides insights into the aspects of self-management as it relates to its definition and application. It highlights how self-management can be applied to various long-term health conditions, for different populations or target groups and in different contexts. The text provides an overview of self-management and the rationale for its applications by illustrating its use in specific clinical conditions and in different sub-populations and target groups. Academics can use the book as a textbook when teaching postgraduate and undergraduate students about self-management as a technique to facilitate community reintegration for individuals living with long-term conditions. It can also be used by clinicians to enhance their management of individuals with long-term conditions. Furthermore, researchers can use the text to expand and support their research in this area.
