Book Political Hell Raiser

Download or read book Political Hell Raiser written by Marc C. Johnson and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burton K. Wheeler (1882-1975) may have been the most powerful politician Montana ever produced, and he was one of the most influential—and controversial—members of the United States Senate during three of the most eventful decades in American history. A New Deal Democrat and lifelong opponent of concentrated power—whether economic, military, or executive—he consistently acted with a righteous personal and political independence that has all but disappeared from the public sphere. Political Hell-Raiser is the first book to tell the full story of Wheeler, a genuine maverick whose successes and failures were woven into the political fabric of twentieth-century America. Wheeler came of political age amid antiwar and labor unrest in Butte, Montana, during World War I. As a crusading United States attorney, he battled Montana’s powerful economic interests, championed farmers and miners, and won election to the U.S. Senate in 1922. There he made his name as one of the “Montana scandalmongers,” uncovering corruption in the Harding and Coolidge administrations. Drawing on extensive research and new archival sources, Marc C. Johnson follows Wheeler from his early backing of Franklin D. Roosevelt and ardent support of the New Deal to his forceful opposition to Roosevelt’s plan to expand the Supreme Court and, in a move widely viewed as political suicide, his emergence as the most prominent spokesman against U.S. involvement in World War II right up to three days before Pearl Harbor. Johnson provides the most thorough telling of Wheeler’s entire career, including all its accomplishments and contradictions, as well as the political storms that the senator both encouraged and endured. The book convincingly establishes the place and importance of this principled hell-raiser in American political history.

Download or read book Breach of Trust written by Tom A. Coburn and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom A. Coburn, a congressional maverick who kept his promise to serve three terms and then leave Washington, offers a candid look at the inner workings of Congress-why the system changes politicians instead of vice versa. Breach of Trust shows readers, through shocking behind-the-scenes stories, why Washington resists the reform our country desperately needs and how they can make wise, informed decisions about current and future political issues and candidates. This honest and critical look at "business as usual" in Congress reveals how and why elected representatives are quickly seduced into becoming career politicians who won't push for change. Along the way, Coburn offers readers realistic ideas for how to make a difference.

Book A Letter to America

Download or read book A Letter to America written by David L. Boren and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-09-14 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful wake-up call to all Americans With only 6 percent of the world’s population, how long will the United States remain a global superpower? The answer, David Boren tells us in A Letter to America, depends on asking ourselves tough questions. A powerful wake-up call to Americans, A Letter to America, forces us to take a bold, objective look at ourselves. In A Letter to America, Boren explains with unsparing clarity why the country is at a crossroads and why decisive action is urgently needed and offers us an ambitious, hopeful plan. What the country needs, Boren asserts, are major reforms to restore the ability of our political system to act responsibly. By relying on our shared values, we can replace cynicism with hope and strengthen our determination to build a better future. We must fashion a post–Cold War foreign policy that fits twenty-first-century realities—including multiple contending superpowers. We must adopt campaign finance reform that curbs the influence of special interests and restores political power to the voters. Universal health care coverage, budget deficit reduction, affordable higher education, and a more progressive tax structure will strengthen the middle class. Boren also describes how we can renew our emphasis on quality primary and secondary education, revitalize our spirit of community, and promote volunteerism. He urges the teaching of more American history and government, for without educated citizens our system cannot function and our rights will not be preserved. Unless we understand how we became great, we will not remain great. The plan Boren puts forward is optimistic and challenges Americans to look into the future, decide what we want to be and where we want to go, and then implement the policies and actions we need to take us there.

Gore joined the Democrats in early Oklahoma after years as an activist for the Populist Party. Having lost his eyesight during his youth, he was one of the nation's most effective orators. His grasp of legislative subjects and the ability to deliver long speeches on the floor of the U.S. Senate marveled his colleagues and the press, who dubbed him "The Blind Cowboy." Gore stood firm in his convictions even when his positions cost him elections. He opposed America's entrance into World War I, and lost his bid for reelection in 1920. He risked his friendship with President Franklin D. Roosevelt by casting the lone vote against the establishment of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the Great Depression. Robert L. Owen served as U.S. Senator for the first 18 years of statehood. After coming to Indian Territory with his mother, Owen was a schoolteacher, lawyer, journalist, Indian agent, and banker. He was popular for winning a major court case on behalf of the Eastern Cherokees in seeking compensation from the federal government for eastern lands lost during removal. A Democrat who fought to strengthen public control of government and fight child labor use, Owen is best known as the Senate sponsor of the Glass-Owen Federal Reserve Act of 1913, the legislation that created the Federal Reserve System. For his efforts in stabilizing America's banking industry, Owen has been called the "Father of the Federal Reserve." Even though Gore and Owen were often far apart on issues, both were instrumental in establishing a power base to be built upon by later congressmen and senators to assure that the Sooner State's voice in the federal government was strong."--book flap.

Book The Senate Syndrome

Download or read book The Senate Syndrome written by Steven S. Smith and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2014-03-20 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its rock-bottom approval ratings, acrimonious partisan battles, and apparent inability to do its legislative business, the U.S. Senate might easily be deemed unworthy of attention, if not downright irrelevant. This book tells us that would be a mistake. Because the Senate has become the place where the policy-making process most frequently stalls, any effective resolution to our polarized politics demands a clear understanding of how the formerly august legislative body once worked and how it came to the present crisis. Steven S. Smith provides that understanding in The Senate Syndrome. Like the Senate itself, Smith’s account is grounded in history. Countering a cacophony of inexpert opinion and a widespread misunderstanding of political and legislative history, the book fills in a world of missing information—about debates among senators concerning fundamental democratic processes and the workings of institutional rules, procedures, and norms. And Smith does so in a clear and engaging manner. He puts the present problems of the Senate—the “Senate syndrome,” as he calls them—into historical context by explaining how particular ideas and procedures were first framed and how they transformed with the times. Along the way he debunks a number of myths about the Senate, many perpetuated by senators themselves, and makes some pointed observations about the media’s coverage of Congress. The Senate Syndrome goes beyond explaining such seeming technicalities as the difference between regular filibusters and post-cloture filibusters, the importance of chair rulings, the changing role of the parliamentarian, and the debate over whether appeals of points of order should be subject to cloture margins, to show why understanding them matters. At stake is resolution of the Senate syndrome, and the critical underlying struggle between majority rule and minority rights in American policy making.
