Book excerpt: Nancy Bucceris memoir begins in the Dallas airport in 2014, when she received a phone call from an emergency room in Virginia, telling her that her husband of thirty-one years was hospitalized with life-threatening swelling of his brain. A fit, healthy sixty-two-year-old, Bob had been felled by a hemorrhagic stroke in his hotel room while on a business trip. After surviving against the odds and fighting hard for six weeks, Bob is dealt another blow: his healthcare insurance company refuses to cover the acute inpatient rehabilitation therapy he needs to get his life back. The denial of care comes just as Bob is beginning to show signs of walking again. Semper Avanti is part love story, part case study, and part survival story. It is about the love between a husband and wife, his determination to reclaim his life, and her fight to save her husband and keep her family whole through the long, excruciating journey of traumatic brain injury recovery. You will experience a range of heartfelt emotions reading Semper Avanti. I applaud the Bucceris for sharing their story, which will provide hope and inspiration to many. Jan Walters, Author

Book Quest for the Finish

Download or read book Quest for the Finish written by Jim Buck and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quest for the Finish-Diary of a Distance Runner is the story of one man's personal experiences in the custom of running. It details how he got mixed up in such an endeavor and how it became an integral part of his life; how it morphed into a preferred method for keeping fit. The author describes how a fitness routine can become a sport; how the everyday jogger can become an athlete; how the athlete moves from one challenge to the next. In relating his running experiences over the years, the author provides detailed and inspirational accounts of his own experiences in training and in races at distances from 1 mile to the 26.2-mile marathon. These accounts offer valuable insights into training and racing techniques: the challenges of reaching the finish line; the joy of competition; the anguish when things go wrong. The book is also a travel log of sorts, since it provides descriptions of running adventures across the USA and in several foreign countries. The author takes the reader on an often humorous and sometimes painful journey from the novice runner to the peak of fitness, followed by the eventual slow decline in performance that comes with age and life's struggles.

Download or read book Kate Field written by Gary Scharnhorst and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2008-04-21 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kate Field was among the first celebrity journalists. A literary and cultural sensation, she reported the news while frequently becoming news herself because of her sharp wit and vibrant presence. She wrote for several prestigious newspapers, such as the Boston Post, Chicago Tribune, and New York Herald, as well her own Kate Field’s Washington. Field’s friends and professional acquaintances included Charles Dickens, Robert Browning, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Anthony Trollope, and George Eliot. Legendary novelist Henry James patterned the character of Henrietta Stackpole after her in The Portrait of a Lady. In this eloquent and immensely readable biography, Gary Scharnhorst offers a fascinating, often poignant portrait of a fiercely intelligent and enormously independent woman who contributed significantly to America’s intellectual and social life in the late nineteenth century. Kate Field was an outspoken advocate for the rights of black Americans and founder of the first woman’s club in America. She campaigned to make Yosemite a national park and saved John Brown’s Adirondack farm for the nation. The range of Field’s activities should foster interest in her biography from students and scholars of nineteenth-century American literature, women’s studies, journalism, and biography, and from both public and academic libraries.

  • Author : Fausto Butta
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the vast amount of research on Italian anarchism conducted over the last forty years, little is known about the history of Milanese anarchists. Living Like Nomads: The Milanese Anarchist Movement Before Fascism illuminates anarchist ideas, practices and militants in Milan during the two decades before the rise of fascism. It tells the fascinating stories of some Italian anarchists at the beginning of the twentieth century, and sheds light on their lifestyle, political campaigns and ideological debates. Living Like Nomads examines anarchist thought, particularly the relationship between theories of individualism and communist anarchism. It engages with masters of this school of philosophy such as Bakunin, Malatesta, Stirner and Kropotkin. By detailing the lives of unknown anarchists, it reveals the pivotal role played by anarchists – and anarchism – within the eclectic Italian Left. Milanese anarchists produced exciting initiatives and captivating ideological debates. While they did not cause a revolution in Milan, their importance cannot be overlooked. Anarchists in Milan gave birth to the first non-denominational modern school, campaigned against militarism, engaged with the labour movement, and published extensively. No other anarchist movement has published as much as Milanese anarchists did. While such anarchists did not prevent the rise of fascism in Italy, they were the first instance of anti-fascist resistance when they stood up against the violence of Mussolini’s black shirts after the First World War. Given anarchism’s principles of individual freedom, social justice and equality, this insightful study of the troubled history of anarchist movements contributes to a greater understanding of the modern Left.
