The text is a pre-text, a reading both before and after that frames the art work. What is that? Let us say, in the spirit of inquiry, that of knowing thyself. What, then, of this strange hyphenation? The present text is a pre-text because it is before the Text, the text which the author is always writing but which manifests itself, in sporadic, impulsive bursts, in the form of actual works. The book is the pre-text because it is an excuse, a rationale, a piece of pretension. The book is not about Nietzsche but what it is for someone to read Nietzsche’s text, a book for everyone and no one. How then does one read a book meant for oneself, if oneself is everyone, and not at all for oneself, if oneself is none? Or is it that the real task of reading is for the reader to read what reading is? Then again, need one distinguish between book and text? Perhaps, it is impossible to read a book such as Thus Spoke Zarathustra without invoking the text --or even sub-text – that continually slips away. If one can read a book, one cannot the text for this reason: the text is what the reader has to write through the reading. This has been my experience with Nietzsche’s text, an experience I share with my readers. The very possibility of reading invokes the need to re-write the text. Only in the space between reading and writing can the reader/re-writer hope to stand and understand the discursive grounds. Is that the play which this couplet performs? It has four parts: a historical introduction, the analysis of langue, narrative theory and communication theory. Part I briefly presents all the semiotic schools and their main points of reference. Although this material is accessible in many other Anglophone publications, the presentation is marked by specific choices aiming to display similarities and differences. The analysis of langue in Part II is also available in Anglophone bibliography, but the book presents Saussurean theory according to a new theoretical rationale and enriched with later developments. In addition, it is orientated so as to offer the foundation for the part that follows. Part III is a presentation of Greimasian narrative theory, well documented in Francophone bibliography but poorly represented in Anglophone publications. The presentation extends the theory in both a qualitative and a new quantitative direction, and includes a great number of examples and two extended textual analyses to help the reader understand and apply it. Part IV, communication theory, combines an extension of Greimasian sociosemiotics with other schools of thought. This original theoretical section discusses fourteen consecutive communication models, the synthesis of which results in a holistic, social semiotic theory of communication.

Book excerpt: A new conceptualization of the relationship between the systemic and the iconic in real-time simulations that distinguishes among four levels of forming. Computer simulations conceive objects and situations dynamically, in their changes and progressions. In The Systemic Image, Inge Hinterwaldner considers not only the technical components of dynamic computer simulations but also the sensory aspects of the realization. Examining the optic, the acoustic, the tactile, and the sensorimotor impressions that interactive real-time simulations provide, she finds that iconicity plays a dominant yet unexpected role. Based on this, and close readings of a series of example works, Hinterwaldner offers a new conceptualization of the relationship between systemic configuration and the iconic aspects in these calculated complexes. Hinterwaldner discusses specifications of sensorialization, necessary to make the simulation dynamic perceivable. Interweaving iconicity with simulation, she explores the expressive possibilities that can be achieved under the condition of continuously calculated explicit changes. She distinguishes among four levels of forming: the systems perspective, as a process and schema that establishes the most general framework of simulations; the mathematical model, which marks off the boundaries of the simulation's actualization; the iconization and its orientation toward the user; and interaction design, necessary for the full unfolding of the simulation. The user makes manifest what is initially latent. Viewing the simulation as an interface, Hinterwaldner argues that not only does the sensorially designed aspect of the simulation seduce the user but the user also makes an impact on the simulation—on the dynamic and perhaps on the iconization, although not on the perspectivation. The influence is reciprocal.
