Book Optimal Management of a Commom Property Pest Under Risk

Download or read book Optimal Management of a Commom Property Pest Under Risk written by W. F. Lazarus and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An integrated pest management model is developed for the northern corn rootworm, Diabrotica longicornis, and the western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera, insect pest of corn. Uncertainty and risk aversion are incorporated into an economic threshold model. Two control actions, soil insecticide and crop rotation, are included. The effect of crop insurance and improved scouting accuracy on insecticide use is evaluated. The rootworms population is considered to be a common property resource with an exhaustible stoock of susceptibility to insecticide. A second objective of the study is to evaluation the potential benefits of a regional approach to corn rootworms control, internalizing the externalities of insecticide resistance and pest movement among farms. A genetic model is used as the basis for predicting the influence of insecticides use rate on resistance buildup. The regional approach is compared with an individual farm approach in an intertemporal aoptimization model solved by nonlinear programming. The empirial results indicate that increased risk aversion reduces the economic threshold for insecticide application, Increased risk aversion also reduces the economic threshold for crop rotation when corn has a large comparative advantage over soybeans. The effects of risk aversion on insecticide use is uncertain. Increased risk aversion may increase "insurance" insecticide application on lightly infested fields, but my also lead to diversification to another crop on heavily (...).

Book Western Corn Rootworm

Download or read book Western Corn Rootworm written by Stefan Vidal and published by CABI. This book was released on 2005 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western Corn Rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, has been a major economic pest of maize in the Americas for many years. However, since the early 1990's it has become an increasing threat to crops in Europe and is expected to spread to all maize growing areas of the continent. This book provides a comprehensive review of current knowledge of the biology and ecology of this insect pest and how it might be managed in order to limit its damage as it spreads into new agroecological areas. Cultural, biotechnical, and biological control measures are addressed, as are ecological baseline data such as population dynamics, economic thresholds and aspects of its behaviour. The book also examines the potential of plant protection techniques currently used in North America to be applied in Europe.

Book Integrated Pest Management IPM

Download or read book Integrated Pest Management IPM written by Harsimran Gill and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an update on environmentally sound pest management practices under the umbrella of integrated pest management (IPM). It consists of seven contributions from different authors providing information on pest management approaches as chemical alternatives. The book chapters detail about historical review of IPM concepts; strategies and some experiences in applications of IPM in Latin America; pest control in organic agricultural system; and the use of entomopathogenic and molluscoparasitic nematodes, insect pheromones, semiochemicals, detergents, and soaps as a part of IPM scheme. The goal of this book is to provide the most up-to-date review on information available around chemical alternatives in IPM. Therefore, this book will equip academia and industry with adequate basic concepts and applications of IPM as eco-friendly pest management option.

Book Using Semiochemicals for Coleopterean Pests in Sustainable Plant Protection

Download or read book Using Semiochemicals for Coleopterean Pests in Sustainable Plant Protection written by Maria Pojar-Fenesan and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early twentieth century, chemical industry provides farmers large amounts of synthetic chemicals used as fertilizers and pest control products. Agriculture became intensive and the crop yields and the profit increased dramatically. Tons of toxic material for crop protection and fertilization were scattered through the gardens, fields, and orchards. But all these chemicals affect the environment, with serious negative consequences for humanity, today and tomorrow. Since 1959 until today many researchers observed and discussed the disadvantages of chemical methods of combating harmful insects and misapplied their disruptive action on cultivated ecosystems. Integrated pest management (IPM) is a process used to solve pest problems with minimum risks to people and environment. The objective of the researches presented in this chapter is to obtain and testing "semiochemicals"-pheromones, involved in intraspecific communication, into environmentally compatible strategies, to reduce pest populations under economic damage thresholds. Insect that are monitored and mass trapped in proposed IPM strategies are potato pest, Colorado potato beetle, Lepidoptera decemlineata Say (Coleoptera, Chrisomelidae); corn pests, West Corn Rootworm Diabrotica virgifera virgifera (Coleoptera, Chrisomelidae); and six-spined bark beetle Pityogenes chalcographus (Coleoptera, Scolitydae) pest in coniferous forests.

Book Exploitation of Synergistic Effects Between Semiochemicals and Metarhizium Brunneum Against Soil Pests

Download or read book Exploitation of Synergistic Effects Between Semiochemicals and Metarhizium Brunneum Against Soil Pests written by Michael Albert Brandl and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Root-feeding insects, such as the larvae of the western corn rootworm (WCR), Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and wireworms Agriotes spp. Eschscholtz (Coleoptera: Elateridae), the larvae of click beetles, are widely recognized as major soil pests, which influence agricultural productivity. Environmental concerns and a high risk of insecticide use as well as the lack of other efficient control options require new and effective strategies to target these pests. Two behavioral based control approaches, combining the use of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizi...

Book Plant Kairomones in Insect Ecology and Control

Download or read book Plant Kairomones in Insect Ecology and Control written by Robert L. Metcalf and published by Springer. This book was released on 1992-05-31 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of the coevolutionary process that produced the interactions between plant kairomones and insect sensory organs suggests that kairomones can be employed for insect control in a variety of baits and traps. This book discusses the major theoretical approaches to the subject, as well as a number of specific applications in pest control. The authors describe their own work with volatile kairomones and their synthetic analogues used in the control of fruitflies and the corn rootworm beetle, and provide an overview of other research in this area. Professionals, professors, and graduate students in the fields of entomology, crop protection biochemistry, ecology, toxicology, and evolutionary biology will find that this concise and timely book contains much new and useful information. Researchers in biotechnology, particularly in the agricultural area, and agricultural, plant, and natural product chemists, will also find here the most up-to-date work available on plant kairomones and pest management.
