Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychosomatic medicine or consultation-liaison psychiatry is the branch of psychiatry that focuses on the mental health issues which accompany, or develop as a result of, other medical disorders. This subdiscipline forms an important part of training in psychiatry. This book provides an ideal first exposure to the inseparable nature of physical and psychological health and illness, and a comprehensive introduction to the broad range of disorders seen on the psychiatric consult service. Organized into a series of bitesized chapters, each focusing on a typical consult question, this handbook provides a practical and portable reference which should set both strategy and tactics for the next generation of consulting psychiatrists. Essential reading for medical students, psychiatry residents and psychosomatic fellows, this manual will provide immediate, in-the-field guidance on the evaluation and management of common consultation requests.

Book Seminars in the Psychotherapies

Download or read book Seminars in the Psychotherapies written by and published by . This book was released on 2021-06 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Working in mental health puts us in touch with the complexity, depth, creativity and turmoil of the human mind. We are at the emotional coal face, privileged to be encountering the fundamental unknowability and strangeness of the internal world. How much we make of this opportunity depends on how open or closed we are to the experience. Our patients communicate their disturbance powerfully and the working environment can be challenging and exhausting without meaningful understanding. To explore one's own mind, and to be receptive and knowledgeable about the unconscious processes that underlie all mental activity, allows us to learn from this experience. Working in this area then becomes more creative, enjoyable, productive, and of lower personal risk. It feeds rather than depletes"--

Book Consultation Liaison Psychiatry

Download or read book Consultation Liaison Psychiatry written by Hoyle Leigh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essential role of the psychiatrist as consultant and educator of primary care physicians is increasing in importance as the American health care system faces fundamental restructuring. In a recent workshop during the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association, a number of prominent consultation-liaison psychiatrists reviewed major developments in consultation-liaison psychiatry during the past decade and looked toward the future. This book is based on these presentations, but it is not simply a proceedings book. A number of additional experts have contributed important chapters, and all the chapters based on the presentations are expanded and updated. Thus, this book reviews the current state of consultation-liaison psychiatry and anticipates future challenges. It also informs the reader about the state-of-the-art knowledge and skills in consultation-liaison psychiatry as of 1994. This book should be a valuable up-to-date overview/refresher for both consultation liaison psychiatrists and general psychiatrists who wish to update and formulate his/her consultant role. It should be especially valuable for psychiatric residents for whom the role as consultant to primary physicians assumes increasing importance, and for primary physicians and medical students who are interested in learning about commonly encountered complex biopsychosocial problems of their patients and integrating these dimensions in patient care. I am grateful to Mary Safford and Eileen Bermingham of Plenum for their help with the preparation and production of this book. I am also thankful to Anita Shaw for her secretarial help. Book excerpt: "The 2nd edition of this book was edited by David King and published in 2004. Since then there have been major advances in psychopharmacology in terms of new medications coming to the market, increased understanding of the mechanisms of drug action and new data on the efficacy, tolerability, safety and clinical effectiveness of a range of medications. Partly as a result, clinical guidelines for many psychiatric disorders have altered. As such, a new edition of this textbook was essential and we were delighted when the College approached us to edit the 3rd edition. This was a major endeavor that was only possible with the commitment and expertise of the authors"--

Book Clinical Topics in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Download or read book Clinical Topics in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry written by Sarah Huline-Dickens and published by RCPsych Publications. This book was released on 2014-03-03 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: However much policy material is produced, the real function of most child psychiatrists is to assess and treat mental disorders in childhood and adolescence. This is a comprehensive update on the field that will inform the clinical practice of all child and adolescent mental health professionals. The authors bring the medical perspective to bear on psychopathology and demonstrate that our understanding of childhood psychiatric disorders, their origins and their treatments are improving. They write with a particular focus on four contemporary themes – continuity into adult life, the integration of biological and social aetiology, the influence of neuroscience, and the increasing use of research and evidence – and take into account recent changes in DSM-5. Some chapters have been specially commissioned for this book, while previous versions of the others have been published in the journal Advences in Psychiatric Treatment and have now been fully revised and updated in line with the four themes. The new chapters include disorders in 0- to 4-year-olds, Tourette syndrome and the clinically significant topic of anxiety. Other topics include: autism spectrum disorders, behavioural and affective disorders, pharmacology and psychological therapies, fabrication and induction of illness, and gender dysphoria. All the topics covered are central to the work of practising child and adolescent mental health professionals, and many will also be relevant to paediatricians, psychologists, social workers, and trainees in all these fields.
