Book Atiyah Singer Index Theorem An Introduction

Download or read book Atiyah Singer Index Theorem An Introduction written by Amiya Mukherjee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is a thorough introduction to the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for elliptic operators on compact manifolds without boundary. The main theme is only the classical index theorem and some of its applications, but not the subsequent developments and simplifications of the theory. The book is designed for a complete proof of the K -theoretic index theorem and its representation in terms of cohomological characteristic classes. In an effort to make the demands on the reader's knowledge of background materials as modest as possible, the author supplies the proofs of almost every result. The applications include Hirzebruch signature theorem, Riemann-Roch-Hirzebruch theorem, and the Atiyah-Segal-Singer fixed point theorem, etc.

Book The Strangest Man

Download or read book The Strangest Man written by Graham Farmelo and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2009-08-25 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Dirac was among the greatest scientific geniuses of the modern age. One of Einstein's most admired colleagues, he helped discover quantum mechanics, and his prediction of antimatter was one of the greatest triumphs in the history of physics. In 1933 he became the youngest theoretician ever to win the Nobel Prize in Physics. Dirac's personality, like his achievements, is legendary. The Strangest Man uses previously undiscovered archives to reveal the many facets of Dirac's brilliantly original mind.

Book Encyclopaedia of Mathematics

Download or read book Encyclopaedia of Mathematics written by Michiel Hazewinkel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF MATHEMATICS aims to be a reference work for all parts of mathe matics. It is a translation with updates and editorial comments of the Soviet Mathematical Encyclopaedia published by 'Soviet Encyclopaedia Publishing House' in five volumes in 1977-1985. The annotated translation consists of ten volumes including a special index volume. There are three kinds of articles in this ENCYCLOPAEDIA. First of all there are survey-type articles dealing with the various main directions in mathematics (where a rather fine subdivi sion has been used). The main requirement for these articles has been that they should give a reasonably complete up-to-date account of the current state of affairs in these areas and that they should be maximally accessible. On the whole, these articles should be understandable to mathematics students in their first specialization years, to graduates from other mathematical areas and, depending on the specific subject, to specialists in other domains of science, en gineers and teachers of mathematics. These articles treat their material at a fairly general level and aim to give an idea of the kind of problems, techniques and concepts involved in the area in question. They also contain background and motivation rather than precise statements of precise theorems with detailed definitions and technical details on how to carry out proofs and constructions. The second kind of article, of medium length, contains more detailed concrete problems, results and techniques.

Book Topological Methods in Algebraic Geometry

Download or read book Topological Methods in Algebraic Geometry written by Friedrich Hirzebruch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-02-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years new topological methods, especially the theory of sheaves founded by J. LERAY, have been applied successfully to algebraic geometry and to the theory of functions of several complex variables. H. CARTAN and J. -P. SERRE have shown how fundamental theorems on holomorphically complete manifolds (STEIN manifolds) can be for mulated in terms of sheaf theory. These theorems imply many facts of function theory because the domains of holomorphy are holomorphically complete. They can also be applied to algebraic geometry because the complement of a hyperplane section of an algebraic manifold is holo morphically complete. J. -P. SERRE has obtained important results on algebraic manifolds by these and other methods. Recently many of his results have been proved for algebraic varieties defined over a field of arbitrary characteristic. K. KODAIRA and D. C. SPENCER have also applied sheaf theory to algebraic geometry with great success. Their methods differ from those of SERRE in that they use techniques from differential geometry (harmonic integrals etc. ) but do not make any use of the theory of STEIN manifolds. M. F. ATIYAH and W. V. D. HODGE have dealt successfully with problems on integrals of the second kind on algebraic manifolds with the help of sheaf theory. I was able to work together with K. KODAIRA and D. C. SPENCER during a stay at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton from 1952 to 1954.

Book Elliptic Boundary Problems for Dirac Operators

Download or read book Elliptic Boundary Problems for Dirac Operators written by Bernhelm Booß-Bavnbek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elliptic boundary problems have enjoyed interest recently, espe cially among C* -algebraists and mathematical physicists who want to understand single aspects of the theory, such as the behaviour of Dirac operators and their solution spaces in the case of a non-trivial boundary. However, the theory of elliptic boundary problems by far has not achieved the same status as the theory of elliptic operators on closed (compact, without boundary) manifolds. The latter is nowadays rec ognized by many as a mathematical work of art and a very useful technical tool with applications to a multitude of mathematical con texts. Therefore, the theory of elliptic operators on closed manifolds is well-known not only to a small group of specialists in partial dif ferential equations, but also to a broad range of researchers who have specialized in other mathematical topics. Why is the theory of elliptic boundary problems, compared to that on closed manifolds, still lagging behind in popularity? Admittedly, from an analytical point of view, it is a jigsaw puzzle which has more pieces than does the elliptic theory on closed manifolds. But that is not the only reason.
