Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Orang Kemboja or Cham Muslim community may not ring a bell to many of us compared to the other migrant communities who have long settled in Malaysia. Cambodia, previously a part of the Champa kingdom is the homeland of this little-known community. After the Khmer Rouge regime took over Cambodia in April 1975, the migration of Orang Kemboja especially to Malaysia has sparked a sociopolitical phenomenon which became a subject of interest for many scholars. Thus, this book is indeed a must-have reference for those looking to learn more on the economic and social history of the Orang Kemboja to fully understand Malaysia’s welcoming gesture to the community when PulauKeladi was offered to be their foreign paradise.
Download or read book Islamisation written by A. C. S. Peacock and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-08 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spread of Islam and the process of Islamisation (meaning both conversion to Islam and the adoption of Muslim culture) is explored in the twenty-four chapters of this volume. Taking a comparative perspective, both the historical trajectory of Islamisation and the methodological problems in its study are addressed, with coverage moving from Africa to China and from the seventh century to the start of the colonial period in 1800. Key questions are addressed. What is meant by Islamisation? How far was the spread of Islam as a religion bound up with the spread of Muslim culture? To what extent are Islamisation and conversion parallel processes? How is Islamisation connected to Arabisation? What role do vernacular Muslim languages play in the promotion of Muslim culture? The broad, comparative perspective allows readers to develop a thorough understanding of the process of Islamisation over eleven centuries of its history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Cambodia s Muslims and the Malay World written by Philipp Bruckmayr and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-03-25 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph Philipp Bruckmayr examines the development of Cambodia’s Muslim minority from the mid-19th to the 21st century. During this period Cambodia’s Cham and Chvea Muslims established strong relationships with Malay centers of Islamic learning in Patani, Kelantan and Mecca. During the 1970s to the early 1990s these longstanding relationships came to a sudden halt due to civil war and the systematic Khmer Rouge repression. Since the 1990s ties to the Malay world have been revived and new Islamic currents, including Salafism and Tablighism, have left their mark on contemporary Cambodian Islam. Bruckmayr traces how these dynamics resulted inter alia in a history of local Islamic factionalism, culminating in the eventual state recognition of two separate Islamic congregations in the late 1990s.

Download or read book The Qur an in the Malay Indonesian World written by Majid Daneshgar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The largely Arabo-centric approach to the academic study of tafsir has resulted in a lack of literature exploring the diversity of Qur'anic interpretation in other areas of the Muslim-majority world. The essays in The Qur'an in the Malay-Indonesian World resolve this, aiming to expand our knowledge of tafsir and its history in the Malay-Indonesian world. Highlighting the scope of Qur'anic interpretation in the Malay world in its various vernaculars, it also contextualizes this work to reveal its place as part of the wider Islamic world, especially through its connections to the Arab world, and demonstrates the strength of these connections. The volume is divided into three parts written primarily by scholars from Malaysia and Indonesia. Beginning with a historical overview, it then moves into chapters with a more specifically regional focus to conclude with a thematic approach by looking at topics of some controversy in the broader world. Presenting new examinations of an under-researched topic, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of Islamic studies and Southeast Asian studies.
