Book Seminal Sociological Writings Volume 2

Download or read book Seminal Sociological Writings Volume 2 written by Richard Altschuler and published by Gordian Knot Books. This book was released on 2014-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writings of Harriet Martineau and W.E.B. Du Bois—generally known as the first woman and black founders of sociology—bookend this rich collection of pioneering works that created “the science of society.” The sixteen writings in this anthology originally appeared in articles and books published from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. They are, therefore, primary source documents that allow modern readers to see how the authors introduced their paradigm-changing concepts that shattered earlier perceptions of society—concepts such as “culture lag,” “collective bargaining,” “human ecology,” “iron law of oligarchy,” and “class conflict,” which still largely influence the way twenty-first century social scientists think about and study human relationships, institutions, societies, and cultures. Along with the writings of Martineau and Du Bois, this volume features original works by other major founders of sociology, including Beatrice Webb, Vilfredo Pareto, Jane Addams, Robert Michels, William F. Ogburn, Robert E. Park, Friedrich Engels, Henry Sumner Maine, Walter Bagehot, Ludwig Gumplowicz, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Albion Small, Gustav Ratzenhofer, Ernest Burgess, and Franz Oppenheimer. The groundbreaking writings in this anthology, which is a companion volume to Seminal Sociological Writings: From Auguste Comte to Max Weber (2010), can serve as either a primary or ancillary text in courses on the history of sociology and sociological theory. It will also enlighten all individuals interested in the birth and development of the social sciences.

Book excerpt: "This book explores the innovative, sociological approach adopted by Harriet Martineau in her efforts to develop a 'scientific' approach to understanding social and societal change. With attention to her focus on the key social structures and societal issues of her day - the economy, education, the condition of women and the evils of slavery - the authors highlight her creation and application of what we now recognise as sociological methodology, fieldwork, and analysis. Through an examination in each chapter of the writings that best illustrate Martineau's sociological perspective, Reintroducing Harriet Martineau discusses her enduring contribution to sociology. As such, it will appeal to scholars and students of sociology with interests in the history of the discipline, and questions of methodology"--

Book The Social Theory of W E B Du Bois

Download or read book The Social Theory of W E B Du Bois written by Phil Zuckerman and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2004-02-20 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karl Marx, Max Weber, and Emile Durkheim are widely recognized as the trinity of sociological theory. While these three sociologists were trailblazing social theorists who enhanced the study of human behavior and its relationship to social institutions, other, more contemporary scholars were just as innovative - one of those scholars being W. E. B. Du Bois. W. E. B. Du Bois was a political and literary giant of the 20th century, publishing over twenty books and thousand of essays and articles throughout his life. In The Social Theory of W. E. B. Du Bois, editor Phil Zuckerman assembles Du Bois′s work from a wide variety of sources, including articles Du Bois published in newspapers, speeches he delivered, selections from well-known classics such as The Souls of Black Folk and Darkwater, and lesser-known, hard-to-find material written by this revolutionary social theorist. W. E. B Du Bois is arguably one of the most imaginative, perceptive, and prolific founders of the sociological discipline. In addition to leading the Pan-African movement and being an activist for civil rights for African Americans, Du Bois was a pioneer of urban sociology, an innovator of rural sociology, a leader in criminology, the first American sociologist of religion, and most notably the first great social theorist of race. The Social Theory of W. E. B. Du Bois is the first book to examine Du Bois′s writings from a sociological perspective and emphasize his theoretical contributions. This volume covers topics such as the meaning of race, race relations, international relations, economics, labor, politics, religion, crime, gender, and education. The Social Theory of W. E. B. Du Bois offers an excellent introduction to the sociological theory of one of the 20th century′s intellectual beacons. It is a dynamic text for undergraduate and graduate students studying sociological theory, African American studies, and race and ethnicity.

Book The Souls of W E B Du Bois

Download or read book The Souls of W E B Du Bois written by Edward J. Blum and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Souls of W. E. B. Du Bois is a collection of articles that treat Du Bois on the subject of religion by reintroducing his life and work to an audience that may be familiar with his work generally but may never have seen analyses of his study of religion. Because the project includes articles that examine both Du Bois's personal religious life along with his examination of religion, the editors seek to add not only to our knowledge of Du Bois's scholarly contributions but also hope to shed light on his personal life and religiosity. Also, in treating the biography and career of a thinker whose work covers much of the twentieth century, the editors intend this work to address larger issues related to religion in the United States over the course of the century.

Book Principle and Practice Esprios Classics

Download or read book Principle and Practice Esprios Classics written by Harriet Martineau and published by Blurb. This book was released on 2019-10-02 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harriet Martineau (12 June 1802 - 27 June 1876) was a British social theorist and Whig writer, often cited as the first female sociologist. Martineau wrote many books and a multitude of essays from a sociological, holistic, religious, domestic, and perhaps most controversially, feminine perspective. She also translated various works by Auguste Comte, and she earned enough to support herself entirely by her writing, a rare feat for a woman in the Victorian era. The young Princess Victoria enjoyed reading Martineau's publications. She invited Martineau to her coronation in 1838 - an event which Martineau described in great and amusing detail to her many readers. Martineau said of her own approach to writing: "when one studies a society, one must focus on all its aspects, including key political, religious, and social institutions". She believed a thorough societal analysis was necessary to understand women's status under men. The novelist Margaret Oliphant said "as a born lecturer and politician [Martineau] was less distinctively affected by her sex than perhaps any other, male or female, of her generation".

Book Against Epistemic Apartheid

Download or read book Against Epistemic Apartheid written by Reiland Rabaka and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2010-05-10 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this intellectual history-making volume, multiple award-winning W. E. B. Du Bois scholar Reiland Rabaka offers the first book-length treatment of Du Bois's seminal sociological discourse: from Du Bois as inventor of the sociology of race to Du Bois as the first sociologist of American religion; from Du Bois as a pioneer of urban and rural sociology to Du Bois as innovator of the sociology of gender and inaugurator of intersectional sociology; and, finally, from Du Bois as groundbreaking sociologist of education and critical criminologist to Du Bois as dialectical critic of the disciplinary decadence of sociology and the American academy. Against Epistemic Apartheid brings new and intensive archival research into critical dialogue with the watershed work of classical and contemporary, male and female, black and white, national and international sociologists and critical social theorists' Du Bois studies. Against Epistemic Apartheid offers an accessible introduction to Du Bois's major contributions to sociology and, therefore, will be of interest to scholars and students not only in sociology, but also African American studies, American studies, cultural studies, critical race studies, gender studies, and postcolonial studies, as well as scholars and students in 'traditional' disciplines such as history, philosophy, political science, economics, education, and religion.

Download or read book Sociology in America written by Craig Calhoun and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 929 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the word “sociology” was coined in Europe, the field of sociology grew most dramatically in America. Despite that disproportionate influence, American sociology has never been the subject of an extended historical examination. To remedy that situation—and to celebrate the centennial of the American Sociological Association—Craig Calhoun assembled a team of leading sociologists to produce Sociology in America. Rather than a story of great sociologists or departments, Sociology in America is a true history of an often disparate field—and a deeply considered look at the ways sociology developed intellectually and institutionally. It explores the growth of American sociology as it addressed changes and challenges throughout the twentieth century, covering topics ranging from the discipline’s intellectual roots to understandings (and misunderstandings) of race and gender to the impact of the Depression and the 1960s. Sociology in America will stand as the definitive treatment of the contribution of twentieth-century American sociology and will be required reading for all sociologists.
