Book excerpt: The Second International Workshop on Surfaces and Interfaces of Mesoscopic Devices (SIMD'97) was held among the luxurious surroundings of the Hyatt Regency Hotel, on the Hawaiian island of Maui, from 7-12 December 1997. Some seventy researchers from around the world gathered in this idyllic setting to report key advances in the physics of mesoscopic devices and their future technological applications. The atmosphere of the workshop was highly stimulating, with all contributions presented in oral format and sufficient time allocated for lively question and answer sessions. The scope of the workshop was also ambitious, although without being over-diluted. Major topics covered included: fundamentals of electron transport in quantum dots and quantum dot arrays, organics on semiconductors, impurities in heterostructures, fabrication of nanostructures, single electron devices, quantum wells and nanodevices. As Guest Editor of this special issue of Semiconductor Science and Technology, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the workshop committee members for their hard work and to gratefully acknowledge the financial support for SIMD'97 from the Arizona State University and the Office of Naval Research. Here's looking forward to doing it all again.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superlattices and Microstructures is a journal devoted to the science and technology of synthetic microstructures, microdevices, surfaces and interfaces. The last decade has seen rapid developments in the fabrication, characterization and conceptual understanding of synthetic microstructures in many different material systems including silicon, III-V and II-VI semiconductors, metals, ceramics and organics. The objective of this journal is to provide a common interdisciplinary platform for the publication of the latest research results on all such "nanostructures" with dimensions in the range of 1-100 nm; the unifying theme here being the dimensions of these artificial structures rather than the material system in which they are fabricated. Topics of emphasis included electron spin coherence, entanglement and transport; metal insulator transitions in quantum dot arrays, phase braking times, Bohn trajectories and dissipative transport. A session was devoted to tunneling in extremely thin oxides and reliability questions for silicon technology. Silicon-based nanoelectronics and nanomechanics were discussed in several papers including surface chemistry as resolved on the atomic scale by scanning tunneling microscopy. Considerable progress was reported in all of these areas. All invited speakers attended and presented their topic and virtually all accepted contributed papers were given and are represented in the proceedings.

Book Photovoltaic and Photoactive Materials

Download or read book Photovoltaic and Photoactive Materials written by Joseph M. Marshall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) was to present an up-to-date overview of various current areas of interest in the field of photovoltaic and related photoactive materials. This is a wide-ranging subject area, of significant commercial and environmental interest, and involves major contributions from the disciplines of physics, chemistry, materials, electrical and instrumentation engineering, commercial realisation etc. Therefore, we sought to adopt an inter disciplinary approach, bringing together recognised experts in the various fields while retaining a level of treatment accessible to those active in specific individual areas of research and development. The lecture programme commenced with overviews of the present relevance and historical development of the subject area, plus an introduction to various underlying physical principles of importance to the materials and devices to be addressed in later lectures. Building upon this, the ASI then progressed to more detailed aspects of the subject area. We were also fortunately able to obtain a contribution from Thierry Langlois d'Estaintot of the European Commission Directorate, describing present and future EC support for activities in this field. In addition, poster sessions were held throughout the meeting, to allow participants to present and discuss their current activities. These were supported by what proved to be very effective feedback sessions (special thanks to Martin Stutzmann), prior to which groups of participants enthusiastically met (often in the bar) to identify and agree topics of common interest.

Book Nanostructure Science and Technology

Download or read book Nanostructure Science and Technology written by Richard W. Siegel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-09-30 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timely information on scientific and engineering developments occurring in laboratories around the world provides critical input to maintaining the economic and technological strength of the United States. Moreover, sharing this information quickly with other countries can greatly enhance the productivity of scientists and engineers. These are some of the reasons why the National Science Foundation (NSF) has been involved in funding science and technology assessments comparing the United States and foreign countries since the early 1980s. A substantial number of these studies have been conducted by the World Technology Evaluation Center (WTEC) managed by Loyola College through a cooperative agreement with NSF. The National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), Committee on Technology's Interagency Working Group on NanoScience, Engineering and Technology (CT/IWGN) worked with WTEC to develop the scope of this Nanostucture Science and Technology report in an effort to develop a baseline of understanding for how to strategically make Federal nanoscale R&D investments in the coming years. The purpose of the NSTC/WTEC activity is to assess R&D efforts in other countries in specific areas of technology, to compare these efforts and their results to U. S. research in the same areas, and to identify opportunities for international collaboration in precompetitive research. Many U. S. organizations support substantial data gathering and analysis efforts focusing on nations such as Japan. But often the results of these studies are not widely available. At the same time, government and privately sponsored studies that are in the public domain tend to be "input" studies.

Book Analogue Gravity Phenomenology

Download or read book Analogue Gravity Phenomenology written by Daniele Faccio and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analogue Gravity Phenomenology is a collection of contributions that cover a vast range of areas in physics, ranging from surface wave propagation in fluids to nonlinear optics. The underlying common aspect of all these topics, and hence the main focus and perspective from which they are explained here, is the attempt to develop analogue models for gravitational systems. The original and main motivation of the field is the verification and study of Hawking radiation from a horizon: the enabling feature is the possibility to generate horizons in the laboratory with a wide range of physical systems that involve a flow of one kind or another. The years around 2010 and onwards witnessed a sudden surge of experimental activity in this expanding field of research. However, building an expertise in analogue gravity requires the researcher to be equipped with a rather broad range of knowledge and interests. The aim of this book is to bring the reader up to date with the latest developments and provide the basic background required in order to appreciate the goals, difficulties, and success stories in the field of analogue gravity. Each chapter of the book treats a different topic explained in detail by the major experts for each specific discipline. The first chapters give an overview of black hole spacetimes and Hawking radiation before moving on to describe the large variety of analogue spacetimes that have been proposed and are currently under investigation. This introductory part is then followed by an in-depth description of what are currently the three most promising analogue spacetime settings, namely surface waves in flowing fluids, acoustic oscillations in Bose-Einstein condensates and electromagnetic waves in nonlinear optics. Both theory and experimental endeavours are explained in detail. The final chapters refer to other aspects of analogue gravity beyond the study of Hawking radiation, such as Lorentz invariance violations and Brownian motion in curved spacetimes, before concluding with a return to the origins of the field and a description of the available observational evidence for horizons in astrophysical black holes.
