Book excerpt: The quark-gluon plasma (QGP) has been produced by relativistic heavy ion collisions, and understanding its properties is a primary goal in the field of nuclear physics. This research first elucidates recent semianalytical developments that improve the estimates of the initial energy and net conserved-charge densities and enable the calculation of trajectories in the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) phase diagram for the matter produced by nuclear collisions. A semianalytical model of the initial densities is developed by including the finite nuclear thickness for parton production. The new maximum energy density is found to have an analytical upper bound and satisfy an approximate scaling relation. QCD phase diagram trajectories are extracted from the semianalytical densities using several nuclear equations of state, and the calculated QGP lifetimes are found to depend significantly on the values of the model's parameters. The study next presents a comparison between two solutions of the relativistic Boltzmann equation (RBE): one, a numerical solution using parton trans- port; the other, a theoretical solution for a homogeneous gas of massless particles. Parton transport in Zhang's parton cascade (ZPC) is found to reproduce the results of a recent ex- act analytical solution of the RBE with an unexpected effectiveness at high densities when using new generalized collision schemes. Finally, the work discusses some open questions related to parton transport in ZPC and suggests some possible directions to uncover their answers. These future research goals include discovering the cause of an unexpected problem arising in simulations with three-dimensional (3D) expansion, understanding the theoretical distribution of the total center-of-mass (CM) energy squared for two-parton collisions, and studying curved parton motion in the presence of strong electromagnetic fields. Overall, the results presented in this dissertation improve the theoretical and numerical descriptions of the QGP and should be useful for future studies.

In the area of peripheral collisions, the analysis of the 1n and 2p decay channels has been completed. In the area of central collisions, the first measurement of the E{sub T} distributions in Au + Au collisions, through the use of the participant calorimeter, was completed, and the results were compared with those obtained in collisions with Si projectiles. In addition, a thorough study of two-particle correlation functions was carried out by use of the data from the silicon pad multiplicity detector. Differential cross sections for 14.6-GeV/c 28Si on Al, Cu, and Pb, and 11.4-GeV/c 197Au on Al, Cu, Au, and Pb are given. 32 figs., 4 tabs., 24 refs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a member of the DLS collaboration, the Hopkins group participated in all aspects of the experiment and the analysis of the results. The recent work involved measurements of dielectrons from p-p, p-d collisions as well as heavy ion Ca-Ca collisions at high densities. These results show the expected effects of bremsstrahlung vector meson decay and Dalitz decay but still show that some varieties of the low mass cross-sections disagree with various theoretical estimates, which could indicate other effects of high nuclear density. The Hopkins group has also been an initial member of the STAR collaboration and helped initiate the proposal for jet searches in the heavy ion experiments at RHIC. The group was instrumental in initiating the first stage of an electro-magnetic calorimeter for these experiments. The group also joined (E896) the Ho experiment. This work was primarily devoted to finding the existence of an elementary system containing strange quarks. An initial experiment was done recently at which Hopkins provided various beam counters. The final work is expected to commence in the fall of '98. Finally, the group has contributed to a number of experiments involving polarization effects in nuclear collisions, searching for production of antimatter, and other aspects of relativistic collisions of heavy ions using the facilities at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL).

Book excerpt: We expect to complete the observations of lepton pairs with incident protons on proton and deuteron targets. The early results indicate an important fraction due to processes other than bremsstrahlung. Further high statistic runs on heavier targets (Ca on Ca) are scheduled for 1992 and possible runs for heavier ions. We expect to participate in the running and analysis for these experiments and help prepare for upgrades of the DLS system. The Hopkins group is an active member of a collaboration preparing proposals for RHIC (STAR). Our main interest is the behavior of quarks and gluons traversing the high density medium that ultimately appear in the form of jets. A program of studying the behavior of multilayer mirrors for Ring Imaging systems that can be utilized for both triggering and Cerenkov Ring determination will continue.

The origin of this meeting goes back to 1982 when the organizers met at the GANIL laboratory in Caen, France which had just started accelerating argon ions at 44 MeV per nucleon. We then realized that 1984 should be the appropriate time to review the first results obtained with such new kinds of facilities. The material contained in this volume, presenting many beautiful re sults on nuclei at high excitation, fully confirms this point. Many stimulating exchanges between experts in rather diffe rent fields already took place during the school and we hope that this cross fertilization will lead to further developments. About half of the present volume is also devoted to the field of relativistic heavy ion collisions, which is now expanding rapidly. As an illustration, let us recall that the construction of a 30 on 30 GeV per nucleon collider at Brookhaven has been recognized last year as one cf the major priorities by the US Nuclear Science Advisory Committee. We would like to express our gratitude to NATO for its ge nerous financial support which made this institute possible.
