Book excerpt: Excerpt from Semi-Monthly Honey Report, 1943: Information From Producing Areas East of Cascades. The winter so far has been mild with considerable rain and some snow. Consequently moisture conditions are favorable for the early bloom. Weather has kept most bees confined to the hives, but the few bees which did fly showed that flights are badly needed. Where bees had sufficient stores they are wintering well; but many colonies will need feeding in the spring. Beekeepers would like to see more alfalfa and clover acreage to help honey pro duction. Some new land is being seeded to hay due to higher prices for hay, but these new cropsw111 not benefit the bees before 1944. The production of mint in eastern Washington is spoiling some bee pasture. No mint nectar ruins the honey for table use and to a certain extent ior baking also. The demand for honey is good, but supplies are light, very little honey remaining in the producers' hands or on grocers' shelves. A few sales of 5 - 1b. Pails by bee keepers are reported at per pail retail and 721[ per pail wholesale, Occasional sale of No. 1 comb honey, $4.00 per case. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Semi-Monthly Honey Report: January 16, 1939 Abnormally mild weather continued until toward the latter part of this period when colder weather, With some snow, were general over the East. Rain has fallen over parts of the South. A large area from Texas knorth has benefitted from Widespread rains. Spring - like weather has caused bees to bring in pollen from North Carolina in the East through most of the Southern States, and on the Pacific Coast nearly to the northern boundary. Bees have flown occasionally throughout most of the country, further depleting Winter stores and causing concern lest stores not last until spring nectar is available. So far, however, commercial colonies generally appear to be in good condition. Snow cover is more shallow than usual in the East but extends unusually far south in New mgxlco and Arizona, and over most of the States further North. Numerous reports received of ice covering clover plants in the upper Clover Belt. Demand for honey in large lots continues generally light, but some bee keepers report increasef inquiry for large lots. Some beekeepers feel that greater organization on the part of commercial beekeepers would aid marketing and would increase the sale of honey at fair prices. Small lot sales continue encour, gingiy good in most parts of the country, though at prices belov those of a year ago. Demand for comb honey, which is in light supply, is less than earlier in the season. Queenbreeders and.pa0kage beemen in the South are already beginning preliminary work for the coming season. Reports from numerous beekeepers in the North, however, indicate that their present intentions are not to expand as much as antici pated earlier, or to bring in as many package bees as usual, due to lessened incomes resulting from the present price of honey.
