Download or read book New Haven s Civil War Hospital written by Ira Spar, M.D. and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Civil War's toll mounted, an antiquated medical system faced a deluge of sick and wounded soldiers. In response, the United States created a national care system primarily funded and regulated by the federal government. When New Haven, Connecticut, was chosen as the site for a new military hospital, Pliny Adams Jewett, next in line to become chief of surgery at Yale, sacrificed his private practice and eventually his future in New Haven to serve as chief of staff of the new thousand-bed Knight U.S. General Hospital. The "War Governor," William Buckingham, personally financed hospital construction while supporting needy soldiers and their families. He appointed state agents to scour battlefields and hospitals to ensure his state's soldiers got the best care while encouraging their transfer to the hospital in New Haven. This history of the hospital's construction and operation during the war discusses the state of medicine at the time as well as the administrative side of providing care to sick and wounded soldiers.

Download or read book The Woolsey Sisters of New York written by Anne L. Austin and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a print on demand publication. The three Woolsey Sisters, Abby, Jane, & Georgeanna, were pioneers in the development of nursing service & education after the Civil War. In her research, author Anne L. Austin discovered that nursing was but one of the fields of social welfare in which these remarkable women were leaders. Because the private lives of such pioneers have an important relation to their public activities, Austin felt that the story would best be told in the family setting. Generations of the Woolsey family & its collateral branches were notable in the U.S. beginning in the 17th century. This narrative is concerned primarily with Abby, Jane, & Georgeanna, three of the eight children of Charles William & Jane Eliza (Newton) Woolsey, who lived in N.Y. before, during, & after the Civil War. Throughout the war, under the auspices of the U.S. Sanitary Commission, these three women did important work for the Union on behalf of the wounded. Later, in civil life, they became leaders in promoting programs of social welfare, nursing education, & hospital nursing service, & one of them was a pioneer in the education of Negroes. Illus.
