The story follows the beautiful mortal woman Semele, who catches the eye of the mighty god Jupiter. Seduced by her beauty and charm, Jupiter vows to make Semele his immortal bride, much to the dismay of his jealous wife Juno. As Semele becomes entangled in the affairs of the gods, her ambition and desire for power drive her to make a fateful request: to see Jupiter in his divine form. Ignoring the warnings of her sister Ino and the sage Cadmus, Semele's reckless pursuit of glory sets off a chain of events that threatens to unravel the very fabric of the heavens. Congreve's lyrical prose and vibrant characters bring the world of ancient mythology to life, weaving a tapestry of love, betrayal, and divine retribution. Through Semele's journey from mortal to goddess and the consequences of her audacious desires, the opera explores timeless themes of hubris, temptation, and the fragility of human ambition.

Book The Pregnant Male as Myth and Metaphor in Classical Greek Literature

Download or read book The Pregnant Male as Myth and Metaphor in Classical Greek Literature written by David D. Leitao and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-30 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the image of the pregnant male in Greek literature as it evolved over the course of the classical period. The image - as deployed in myth and in metaphor - originated as a representation of paternity and, by extension, 'authorship' of ideas, works of art, legislation, and the like. Only later, with its reception in philosophy in the early fourth century, did it also become a way to figure and negotiate the boundary between the sexes. The book considers a number of important moments in the evolution of the image: the masculinist embryological theory of Anaxagoras of Clazomenae and other fifth century pre-Socratics; literary representations of the birth of Dionysus; the origin and functions of pregnancy as a metaphor in tragedy, comedy and works of some Sophists; and finally the redeployment of some of these myths and metaphors in Aristophanes' Assemblywomen and in Plato's Symposium and Theaetetus.

Book Dionysus

    Book Details:
  • Author : Russell Roberts
  • Publisher : Mitchell Lane Publishers, Inc.
  • Release : 2008-06
  • ISBN : 1612284132
  • Pages : 52 pages

Download or read book Dionysus written by Russell Roberts and published by Mitchell Lane Publishers, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-06 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, was a figure of many different personalities. Was he the mellow, smiling youth who gaily spread his gift of wine all over the world . . . or was he the fierce warrior who subjugated entire nations to his unbending will? Even his gift of wine reflected his dual nature. Wine could make people feel happy and good about themselves. Yet it could also turn them into mindless beasts who acted without thought or reason. The only god with a mortal mother, hated by Hera and driven mad by her, Dionysus figures in some of the most well-known tales of all time, such as the story of King Midas. His influence is vast and his importance to modern cultures remains strong, even while some of the other Olympians have faded into the pages of history. Dionysus has survived for thousands of years. He will likely survive for thousands of years to come.

Book Direct Speech in Nonnus Dionysiaca

Download or read book Direct Speech in Nonnus Dionysiaca written by Berenice Verhelst and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Direct Speech in Nonnus’ Dionysiaca is the first more extensive study of the use and functions of direct speech in Nonnus’ Dionysiaca (5th century AD). Its long soliloquies and scarcity of dialogues have often been pointed out as striking characteristics of Nonnus’ epic style, but nonetheless this fascinating subject received relatively little attention. Berenice Verhelst aims to reveal the poem’s constant interplay between the epic tradition and the late antique literary context with its clear rhetorical stamp. She focusses on the changed functions of direct speech and their implications for the presentation of the mythological story. Organized around six case studies, this book presents an in-depth analysis of a representative part of the vast corpus of the Dionysiaca’s 305 speeches.
