Book excerpt: "This thesis is about the translation of metaphor in the Holy Quran. It assesses the translation of metaphor in three English translations of the Quran, al-Hilali & Khan (2000), A. Ali (2001), and Y. Ali (2004). The different types of metaphor in both Arabic and English as well as the strategies of translating them are discussed. Metaphor in the Holy Quran has been investigated according to the theoretical stipulations posited by Arab rhetoricians, and in this thesis two authoritative interpretations (tafsirs) of the Quran are used in the analysis: al-Maḥalli & as-Suyuti (1974) and Firuzabadi (1992). Adopting Newmark’s (1988) metaphor translation strategies, three different English translations of ten verses with different metaphorical images are assessed to ascertain their success in handling metaphor in the Quran. Each Quranic metaphor is first analyzed in its Arabic context according to the two tafsirs, then its three English translations are assessed. The analysis indicates that Newmark’s third strategy, faithful translation, emerges as the most appropriate for rendering Quranic metaphor into English."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: Qur’anic idiomaticity, in its all aspects, poses a great deal of challenge to Qur’an readers, learners, commentators, and translators. One of the most challenging aspects of Qur’anic idiomaticity is Qur’anic idiomatic phrasal verbs, where significances of proper Arabic verbs are entirely fused with significances of prepositions following them to produce new significances that have nothing to do with the basic significances of those verbs and prepositions. By examining a corpus of ten of the most influential English translations of the Qur’an, this study scrutinizes how some translators of the Qur’an have dealt with the phenomenon of Qur’anic idiomatic phrasal verbs, the difficulties that they have encountered when translating them into English, and the strategies that they have employed in their attempts to overcome the inherent ambiguity of such expressions and provide their functional-pragmatic equivalents for English readership. The study proposes a working model for analysing and assessing the translation of the Qur’anic idiomatic phrasal verbs and provides a number of theory-based recommendations for translators in general and Qur’an translators in particular.

The study is prefaced with a detailed account of the late antique concept of etymologia (Semantic Etymology). In his work, he demonstrates the necessity of this concept for appreciating the Qurʾān’s rhetorical strategies for claiming discursive authority in the Abrahamic theological tradition. The author applies the etymological tool to his investigation of the theological significance of al-āḫira, and concludes that the concept is polysemous, and tolerates a large variety of interpretations. The work is unique in that it draws extensively on Biblical material and presents a plethora of pre-Islamic poetry verses in the analysis of the concept.

The author compares the language of the Qur'an with the language of pre-Islamic poetry, the Prophet's words (hadith), and the language of the Arabs both past and present, to demonstrate that although the Qur'an was revealed in Arabic it was at the same time an Arabic which was entirely new. Original and early Muslim audiences viewed this as miraculous and responded to the Qur'an's words, sounds, rhythms, etc. in a manner consistent with a deeper appreciation of its beauty and majesty which modern ears, trained by familiarity, and despite being surrounded by all manner of dictionaries and studies, are at a loss to capture. Firstly, it aims to examine the conjunctive relations posed by each 'wa' found in surah Yasin and how they are translated in the surah. It then tries to assess the semantic functions of these 'wa' and whether the English translations match with the meaning in the source text. It was found that the semantic function of 'wa' when translated to English is not always direct (one-to- one or 'wa' = 'and') rather 'wa' can translates into nothing/ zero, or it may be replaced by other conjunctions and prepositions such as 'by', however', while etc. The study also reveals two additional semantic functions of 'wa' which have not been stated before, namely; denying 'wa' (wa + ma, or wa + la), and conditional 'wa' (wa + Law).
