In vision, this means that the brain categorizes and identifies all the objects and actions that are being observed. In language, it means that the brain understands the meaning of each word that is being perceived, and integrates across words to understand the meaning of a narrative. Both of these processes can be seen as extracting the meaning, or semantic content, from a dense stream of sensory information. We know very little about how the brain accomplishes these feats. Indeed, entire fields of research (computer vision and natural language processing) are devoted to reproducing on a computer feats of understanding that the human brain accomplishes with ease. We may be able to gain insight into these processes by studying how the semantic information extracted from visual and linguistic stimuli is represented in the brain. This dissertation describes three functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments that have helped to reveal how visual and linguistic semantic information are represented across the human cerebral cortex. These experiments relied on a relatively new fMRI analysis methodology known as voxel-wise modeling (VM). Although this methodology was developed for modeling how the brain represents the structure of visual information, it was adapted here for modeling representation of the extremely complex semantic information present in natural movies and natural narrative stories. The first experiment (Chapter 2) showed that information about object and action categories present in natural movies is represented in a low-dimensional semantic space that is shared across subjects. Projecting this semantic space across the cortex revealed that semantic information is represented in broad cortical gradients that cover a surprising amount of the cortical surface. The second experiment (Chapter 3) showed that information about the semantic content of narrative spoken stories is also represented in a low-dimensional space that is shared across subjects. To model the complex cortical maps for this semantic space a new technique was developed called PrAGMATiC (Probabilistic And Generative Model of Areas Tiling the Cortex). This new technique revealed that the cortical semantic maps can be explained by about 230 functional areas that cover much of the prefrontal cortex, temporoparietal junction, precuneus, and temporal cortex. Finally, the third experiment (Chapter 4) showed that a novel hierarchical logistic regression (HLR) model could accurately decode the categories of objects and actions present in natural movies from fMRI responses.

Language makes us human. It is an intrinsic part of us, although we seldom think about it. Language is also an extremely complex entity with subcomponents responsible for its phonological, syntactic, and semantic aspects. In this landmark work, Angela Friederici offers a comprehensive account of these subcomponents and how they are integrated. Tracing the neurobiological basis of language across brain regions in humans and other primate species, she argues that species-specific brain differences may be at the root of the human capacity for language. Friederici shows which brain regions support the different language processes and, more important, how these brain regions are connected structurally and functionally to make language processes that take place in milliseconds possible. She finds that one particular brain structure (a white matter dorsal tract), connecting syntax-relevant brain regions, is present only in the mature human brain and only weakly present in other primate brains. Is this the “missing link” that explains humans' capacity for language? Friederici describes the basic language functions and their brain basis; the language networks connecting different language-related brain regions; the brain basis of language acquisition during early childhood and when learning a second language, proposing a neurocognitive model of the ontogeny of language; and the evolution of language and underlying neural constraints. She finds that it is the information exchange between the relevant brain regions, supported by the white matter tract, that is the crucial factor in both language development and evolution.

It turns out, however, that they are far from universal, as shown by recent research in the discipline known as semantic typology. To be sure, the roughly 6,500 languages around the world do have many similarities in the sorts of concepts they encode. But they also vary greatly in numerous ways, such as how they partition particular conceptual domains, how they map those domains onto syntactic categories, which distinctions they force speakers to habitually attend to, and how deeply they weave certain notions into the fabric of their grammar. Although these insights from semantic typology have had a major impact on the field of psycholinguistics, they have been mostly neglected by the branch of cognitive neuroscience that studies how concepts are represented, organized, and processed in our brains. In Concepts in the Brain, David Kemmerer exposes this oversight and demonstrates its significance. He argues that as research on the neural substrates of semantic knowledge moves forward, it should, to the extent possible, expand its purview to embrace the broad spectrum of cross-linguistic variation in the lexical and grammatical representation of meaning. Otherwise, it will never be able to achieve a truly comprehensive, pan-human account of the cortical underpinnings of concepts. Researchers in the past have performed various studies to understand the similarities between semantic features across all the three representations. Distributional Semantic (DS) models or word vectors that are trained on text corpora have been widely used to study the convergence of semantic information in the human brain. Moreover, they have been incorporated into various NLP applications such as document categorization, speech to text and machine translation. Due to their widespread adoption by researchers and industry alike, it becomes imperative to test and evaluate the performance of di erent word vectors models. In this thesis, we publish the second iteration of BrainBench: a system designed to evaluate and benchmark word vectors using brain data by incorporating two new Italian brain datasets collected using fMRI and EEG technology. In the second half of the thesis, we explore semantics in Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). CNN is a computational model that is the state of the art technology for object recognition from images. However, these networks are currently considered a black-box and there is an apparent lack of understanding on why various CNN architectures perform better than the other. In this thesis, we also propose a novel method to understand CNNs by studying the semantic representation through its hierarchical layers. The convergence of semantic information in these networks is studied with the help of DS models following similar methodologies used to study semantics in the human brain. Our results provide substantial evidence that Convolutional Neural Networks do learn semantics from the images, and the features learned by the CNNs correlate to the semantics of the object in the image. Our methodology and results could potentially pave the way for improved design and debugging of CNNs.

They focus on the manifestations of attention instead of its rationale. In this book, John Tsotsos develops a formal model of visual attention with the goal of providing a theoretical explanation for why humans (and animals) must have the capacity to attend. He takes a unique approach to the theory, using the full breadth of the language of computation—rather than simply the language of mathematics—as the formal means of description. The result, the Selective Tuning model of vision and attention, explains attentive behavior in humans and provides a foundation for building computer systems that see with human-like characteristics. The overarching conclusion is that human vision is based on a general purpose processor that can be dynamically tuned to the task and the scene viewed on a moment-by-moment basis. Tsotsos offers a comprehensive, up-to-date overview of attention theories and models and a full description of the Selective Tuning model, confining the formal elements to two chapters and two appendixes. Languages differ in the ways in which they structure space, and Regier's aim is to have the model perform its learning task for terms from any natural language. The system has so far succeeded in learning spatial terms from English, German, Russian, Japanese, and Mixtec. The model views simple movies of two-dimensional objects moving relative to one another and learns to classify them linguistically in accordance with the spatial system of some natural language. The overall goal is to determine which sorts of spatial configurations and events are learnable as the semantics for spatial terms and which are not. Ultimately, the model and its theoretical underpinnings are a step in the direction of articulating biologically based constraints on the nature of human semantic systems. Along the way Regier takes up such substantial issues as the attraction and the liabilities of PDP and structured connectionist modeling, the problem of learning without direct negative evidence, and the area of linguistic universals, which is addressed in the model itself. Trained on spatial terms from different languages, the model permits observations about the possible bases of linguistic universals and interlanguage variation.
