The relational model of data provided tremendous impetus for research into query processing. Since a relational query does not specify access paths to the stored data, the database management system (DBMS) must provide an intelligent query-processing subsystem which will evaluate a number of potentially efficient strategies for processing the query and select the one that optimizes a given performance measure. The degree of sophistication of this subsystem, often called the optimizer, critically affects the performance of the DBMS. Research into query processing thus started has taken off in several directions during the past decade. The emergence of research into distributed databases has enormously complicated the tasks of the optimizer. In a distributed environment, the database may be partitioned into horizontal or vertical fragments of relations. Replicas of the fragments may be stored in different sites of a network and even migrate to other sites. The measure of performance of a query in a distributed system must include the communication cost between sites. To minimize communication costs for-queries involving multiple relations across multiple sites, optimizers may also have to consider semi-join techniques.

Book excerpt: The Semantic Web, which is intended to establish a machine-understandable Web, is currently changing from being an emerging trend to a technology used in complex real-world applications. A number of standards and techniques have been developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), e.g., the Resource Description Framework (RDF), which provides a general method for conceptual descriptions for Web resources, and SPARQL, an RDF querying language. Recent examples of large RDF data with billions of facts include the UniProt comprehensive catalog of protein sequence, function and annotation data, the RDF data extracted from Wikipedia, and Princeton University’s WordNet. Clearly, querying performance has become a key issue for Semantic Web applications. In his book, Groppe details various aspects of high-performance Semantic Web data management and query processing. His presentation fills the gap between Semantic Web and database books, which either fail to take into account the performance issues of large-scale data management or fail to exploit the special properties of Semantic Web data models and queries. After a general introduction to the relevant Semantic Web standards, he presents specialized indexing and sorting algorithms, adapted approaches for logical and physical query optimization, optimization possibilities when using the parallel database technologies of today’s multicore processors, and visual and embedded query languages. Book excerpt: The problem of database query optimization is to select an efficient way to process a query expressed in logical terms from among the alternative ways it can be carried out in the physical database. This thesis presents a new approach to this problem, called semantic query optimization. The goal of semantic query optimization is to produce a semantically equivalent query that is less expensive to process than the original query. Semantic query optimization actually transforms the original query into a new one by means of a process of inference. The transformations are limited to those that yield a semantically equivalent query, one that is guaranteed to produce the same answer as the original query in any permitted state of the database. This guarantee is achieved because the knowledge used to transform a query is the same knowledge used to insure the semantic integrity of the data stored in the database. Thus, semantic query optimization brings together the apparently separate research areas of query processing and database integrity. The thesis formally defines transformations that preserve semantic equivalence for queries in the relational calculus. In addition, it identifies several classes of cost-reducing query transformations for relational database queries, and provides quantitative estimates of the improvements they can produce, based upon widely accepted models of query processing. The thesis also discusses the design and implementation of a system that carries out semantic query optimization for an important class of relational database queries.

The OBSERVER system was developed as a result of this Ph.D. thesis. This book is composed of eight chapters. In Chapter 1 we introduce our rationale for writing a book about systems that process queries in global information systems. Then in Chapter 2 we review the techno logical context for our work, including distributed and heterogeneous environments and the use of ontologies. We also compare related work to our own. Chapter 3 presents our proposed global system architecture for query processing in global information systems. The main modules in the architecture and the main steps given to process a query are briefly introduced. Chapters 4 through 7 provide a detailed description of each query processing step. In Chapter 4 we detail the steps needed to access the data corre sponding to a query formulated over an ontology. All the aspects related to distribution, structural and semantic heterogeneity, and restricted query capabilities of the underlying data repositories are considered in this chapter. The main features of the mapping information that relates ontologies and data repositories are also described. Finally, we show the process of generating appropriate plans to access each involved reposi tory and the correlation of the answers coming from different reposito ries.

In most XML database systems, queries are processed by searching the hierarchy of each underlying XML document. Similar to relational databases, most XML documents are actually designed based on the relationship among such semantic concepts as object, attribute and value. Moreover, queries are also issued with concerns of these concepts, e.g., to find the attribute values of a certain object or to find the relationship between two objects. This book presents a new approach to process XML queries. We take semantics as a central concern during XML query processing. We design semantics-based algorithms to perform pattern matching, which is the core operation for XML query processing, as well as grouping and aggregation for analytical queries. We theoretically and experimentally show the advantage of our semantic approach over other existing approaches, in terms of query processing performance. This result should be useful for future research and applications in XML data management.
