Download or read book Border Citizens written by Eric V. Meeks and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Border Citizens, historian Eric V. Meeks explores how the racial classification and identities of the diverse indigenous, mestizo, and Euro-American residents of Arizona’s borderlands evolved as the region was politically and economically incorporated into the United States. First published in 2007, the book examines the complex relationship between racial subordination and resistance over the course of a century. On the one hand, Meeks links the construction of multiple racial categories to the process of nation-state building and capitalist integration. On the other, he explores how the region’s diverse communities altered the blueprint drawn up by government officials and members of the Anglo majority for their assimilation or exclusion while redefining citizenship and national belonging. The revised edition of this highly praised and influential study features a chapter-length afterword that details and contextualizes Arizona’s aggressive response to undocumented immigration and ethnic studies in the decade after Border Citizens was first published. Meeks demonstrates that the broad-based movement against these measures had ramifications well beyond Arizona. He also revisits the Yaqui and Tohono O’odham nations on both sides of the Sonora-Arizona border, focusing on their efforts to retain, extend, and enrich their connections to one another in the face of increasingly stringent border enforcement.

Download or read book Handy Lingo written by Matthew Sample and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2015-09-28 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyday words for everyday use! Making yourself understood is a constant problem for the linguistically-challenged traveller abroad. Phrase books appear to offer a solution, but finding the precise phrase to fit the need is not always easy. If you do, and manage to pronounce it intelligibly, unless the other party sticks to the script the chances are you won’t understand the reply. In everyday life a normal ‘language to language’ dictionary is no more help, being unwieldy and offering far more verbal complexities than the situation demands. Handy Lingo: Spanish is the first in a series of simple travellers’ dictionaries. It translates word to word without confusing and unnecessary tenses, grammar, alternative meanings or nuances. It also includes significant Latin American differences. This pocket-sized booklet is not designed to teach you a language in detail, but to enable you to communicate basic information quickly and without complication. Designed in a practical, simple-to-use format, it can easily be shared with the non-English speaker for a reply. It is, in effect, a linguistic emergency first aid kit. Handy Lingo: Spanish is ideal for travellers with little or no facility in the host language and contains over 3000 words selected to cover every conceivable situation. Quick, easy to use and not reliant on batteries or wi-fi, it provides the verbal basics for communication with Spanish speakers worldwide.

Download or read book La era secular written by Charles Taylor and published by Editorial GEDISA. This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Por qu creemos en dios es written by J. Anderson Thomson and published by Pitchstone Publishing (US&CA). This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In this groundbreaking volume, J. Anderson Thomson Jr., MD, and Clare Aukofer offer a succinct yet comprehensive study of how and why the human mind generates religious belief. Dr. Thomson, a highly respected practicing psychiatrist with credentials in forensic psychiatry and evolutionary psychology, methodically investigates the components and causes of religious belief in the same way any scientist would investigate the movement of astronomical bodies or the evolution of life over time—that is, as a purely natural phenomenon. Providing compelling evidence from psychology, the cognitive neurosciences, and related fields, he, with Ms. Aukofer, presents an easily accessible and exceptionally convincing case that god(s) were created by man—not vice versa. With this slim volume, Dr. Thomson establishes himself as a must-read thinker and leading voice on the primacy of reason and science over superstition and religion.
Download or read book Passional Culture written by Timothy Mitchell and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2015-09-30 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy Week dramas of southern Spain have astounded visitors for centuries. Striking as they are, however, they are only the tip of a cultural iceberg. Casual visitors cannot guess how the cult of the crucified Christ shapes daily behavior and thought patterns. The Passion as lived by Andalusians is closely linked to a penitential ideology that profoundly influences how they feel about life, death, wealth, and poverty. It affects the way men and women see themselves and each other and has played havoc with Catholic orthodoxy by creating unique institutions and customs. In Passional Culture, Timothy Mitchell explores these cultural factors and shows how they have led to popular stagings of the Passion that are moving, riddled with heresy, and obsessed with authority conflicts. He explains why the image of the Mater Dolorosa has come to overshadow that of Christ himself. With keen analysis as well as anecdotes, illustrations, and popular songs, Mitchell makes fascinating aspects of Spanish civilization available to Americans for the first time.
Download or read book Libro de Margery Kempe written by Margery Kempe and published by Universitat de València. This book was released on 2015-05-16 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
