How Not to Act Old gives you simple ways to come back from over the hill and to act as young as you look. Covering everything from old-people entertainment (cancel that dinner party!) to old-people communication (it's called a "voice mail," not a "message," and no one leaves or listens to them anyway), Pamela Redmond Satran decodes the behaviors, viewpoints, and cultural touchstones that separate you from the hip young person you wish you still were. Book The Persecution of Sarah Palin

Download or read book The Persecution of Sarah Palin written by Matthew Continetti and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2009-11-12 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The real story of the Republican vice presidential nominee and her collision with the elite liberal media As the second woman ever nominated as a candidate for vice president, Alaska governor Sarah Palin became an instant phenomenon. Americans were enthralled by a woman with charm, ambition, natural political talent, and a passion for conservative values. But the fascination of ordinary people quickly drew an unprecedented attack from the media elite and liberal activists. Far beyond the normal bounds of tough questions and challenges, Palin's enemies decided that nothing was too personal to attack-including her marriage, her children, her faith, and her wardrobe. The media distorted Palin's positions and beliefs beyond recognition. And almost every word out of her mouth was spun as a "flub." Weekly Standard writer Matthew Continetti reveals the true story of the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee and her persecution by the elites who tried to hide their bias with solemn declarations of objectivity. Continetti offers fresh examples of malicious spin and deceit and shows how liberal snobbery has become a driving force in American politics. Palin's ordeal has become a rallying cry for the GOP in the Obama era. This perceptive book is a must-read for conservatives who want to understand what really happened-and how to avoid a repeat.

Download or read book DEER IN THE HEADLIGHTS written by Dina von Zweck and published by Club Lighthouse Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dina von Zweck (1933-2012) was a prolific award-winning writer and painter who left a large trove of poetry. Lyrical, graceful, and eminently beguiling, their often dazzlingly concise, cryptic stanzas open larger realms and vistas. Each poem is a portal—like a window with Venetian blinds suddenly opening and revealing startling sights, then closing again. Dina’s immediately engaging poetry also serves as a portal for the rest of her voluminous literary legacy—five novels, several novella, twenty-three stage plays, numerous screen scripts, libretti, operas, and essays. Poets always have something unexpected up their sleeves, being able to perceive and materialize what otherwise eludes our imaginations, to make unlikely and confounding connections. Silly Putty non sequiturs and fractured metaphors juxtaposed with an illumined madcap juggle of tropes create whimsical fissions of logic that can suddenly make more sense than sense.

Book excerpt: Using the notion of "framing" as a way of understanding political perception, the authors analyze the narratives told by and about Sarah Palin in the 2008 election - from beauty queen, maverick, faithful fundamentalist and post-feminist role model to pit bull hockey mom, frontier woman, and political outsider. They discuss where those frames are rooted historically in popular and political culture, why they were selected, and the ways that the frames resonated with the electorate.

Book Righting Feminism

  • Author : Ronnee Schreiber
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 2012-04-19
  • ISBN : 0199917027
  • Pages : 205 pages

Download or read book Righting Feminism written by Ronnee Schreiber and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2012-04-19 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we think of women's activism in America, liberal figures such as Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan invariably come to mind. But women's interests are not synonymous with organizations like NOW anymore. As Ronnee Schreiber shows, the conservative ascendancy that began in the Reagan era has been accompanied by the emergence of a broad-based conservative women's movement. Righting Feminism shows that one of the key--albeit overlooked--developments in political activism since the 1980s has been the emergence of conservative women's organizations. It focuses on Concerned Women for America and the Independent Women's Forum to reveal how they are using feminist rhetoric for conservative ends: outlawing abortion, restricting pornography, and bolstering the traditional family. But ironically, these organizations face a paradox: to combat the legacy of feminism--particularly its appeal to the majority of American women--they must use the rhetoric of women's empowerment. Indeed, Schreiber amply illustrates how conservative activists are often the beneficiaries of the very feminist politics they oppose. Yet just as importantly, she demolishes two widely believed truisms: that conservatism holds no appeal to women and that modern conservatism is hostile to the very notion of women's activism. And, in this updated edition, Schreiber takes the story forward with an epilogue that considers the ways in which the politics of representation have changed for both conservative women and feminist activists in the wake of the political ascendency of figures including Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann. Based on numerous interviews with colorful conservative activists and extensive analyses of organizational documents, Righting Feminism offers a new way of understanding the unlikely intersection of women's activism and conservative politics in America today.

Book Sex Mom and God

    Book Details:
  • Author : Frank Schaeffer
  • Publisher : Da Capo Press
  • Release : 2011-05-31
  • ISBN : 0306819856
  • Pages : 321 pages

Download or read book Sex Mom and God written by Frank Schaeffer and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2011-05-31 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A penetrating analysis of political extremism, with a moving and at times hilarious account of growing up in one of the Christian right's most influential families. Few writers command Frank Schaeffer's intimate understanding of right-wing radicalism, and even fewer are able to share their insight as entertainingly and with as much moral weight as he has in Sex, Mom, and God."--Max Blumenthal, author of Republican Gomorrah "Mom was a much nicer person than her God. There are many biblical regulations about everything from beard-trimming to menstruating. Mom worked diligently to recast her personal-hygiene-obsessed God in the best light." Alternating between laugh-out-loud scenes from his childhood and acidic ruminations on the present state of an America he and his famous fundamentalist parents helped create, bestselling author Frank Schaeffer asks what the Glenn Becks and the Rush Limbaughs and the paranoid fantasies of the "right-wing echo chamber" are really all about. Here's a hint: sex. The unforgettable central character in Sex, Mom, and God is the author's far-from-prudish evangelical mother, Edith, who sweetly but bizarrely provides startling juxtapositions of the religious and the sensual thoughout Schaeffer's childhood. She was, says Frank Schaeffer, "the greatest illustration of the Divine beauty of Paradox I've encountered . . . a fundamentalist living a double life as a lover of beauty who broke all her own judgmental rules in favor of creativity." Charlotte Gordon, the award-winning author of Mistress Bradstreet, calls Sex, Mom, and God "a tour de force . . . Sarah Palin, 'The Family,' Anne Hutchinson, adultery, abortion, homophobia, Uganda, Ronald Reagan, B. B. King, Billy Graham, Hugh Hefner -- it's all here. This is the kind of book I did not want to end."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boys Will Be Boys: Media, Morality and the Cover-up of the Todd Palin Shailey Tripp Sex Scandal is the true story of how Shailey Tripp, a young single mother of two special needs children became sexually involved with Todd Palin, husband of former Alaska Governor and 2008 GOP Vice-Presidential nominee, Sarah Palin. This book explains the many factors that culminated in Shailey becoming not only the mistress of " Alaska's First Dude" but also a prostitute working for him which ultimately resulted in Shailey being arrested in March of 2010. However, the story doesn't end there. After they received an anonymous email, The National Enquirer contacted Shailey regarding her relationship with Todd Palin and even ran a couple of stories about her liaison with him with several follow-up interviews scheduled. All that changed, when at the behest of the Palin's lawyers, the Anchorage Police Department issued a press release which stated that they had found no evidence of Todd's involvement with Shailey. From that point on, Shailey was unable to get any media, with the exception of some internet bloggers, to tell her side of things despite the fact that she had proof of her truthfulness and had passed polygraph examinations. Boys Will Be Boys tells the whole story from Shailey's viewpoint and includes the evidence. A true expose of how the media and even law enforcement agencies kowtow to the wealthy, politically powerful people, Boys Will Be Boys: Media, Morality and the Cover-up of the Todd Palin Shailey Tripp Sex Scandal is a must read.
