Book Algorithms and Architectures for Real Time Control 1991

Download or read book Algorithms and Architectures for Real Time Control 1991 written by P.J. Fleming and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer scientists have long appreciated that the relationship between algorithms and architecture is crucial. Broadly speaking the more specialized the architecture is to a particular algorithm then the more efficient will be the computation. The penalty is that the architecture will become useless for computing anything other than that algorithm. This message holds for the algorithms used in real-time automatic control as much as any other field. These Proceedings will provide researchers in this field with a useful up-to-date reference source of recent developments.

Book Computer Aided Design in Control and Engineering Systems

Download or read book Computer Aided Design in Control and Engineering Systems written by P. Martin Larsen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-17 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer Aided Design in Control and Engineering Systems contains the proceedings of the 3rd International Federation of Automatic Control/International Federation for Information Processing Symposium held in Lyngby, Denmark, from July 31 to August 2, 1985. The papers review the state of the art and the trends in development of computer aided design (CAD) of control and engineering systems, techniques, procedures, and concepts. This book is comprised of 74 chapters divided into 17 sections and begins with a description of a prototype computer environment that combines expert control system analysis and design tools. The discussion then turns to decision support systems which could be used to address problems of management and control of large-scale multiproduct multiline batch manufacturing outside the mechanical engineering industries. The following chapters focus on the use of CAD in control education, industrial applications of CAD, and hardware/software systems. Some examples of universal and specialized CAD packages are presented, and applications of CAD in electric power plants, process control systems, and transportation systems are highlighted. The remaining chapters look at CAD/computer aided engineering/computer aided manufacturing systems as well as the use of mathematical methods in CAD. This monograph will be of interest to practitioners in computer science, computer engineering, and industrial engineering.

Book Microprocessor Engineering Aspects of Self tuning Control

Download or read book Microprocessor Engineering Aspects of Self tuning Control written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-Tuning control is an attractive solution to the problem of controlling unknown, time-varying and noisy processes, where conventional PXD controllers may give unsatisfactory performance. In this research work, an attempt has been made to bring the Self-Tuning control methods from the academic world towards industrial practice, and to produce a 'Self-Tuner* hardware, with a performance superior to that of PID controllers, at a comparable cost. Overall, the above objective was achieved in this work. The thesis investigates Self-Tuning and the related theory, and examines the hardware/software requirements of a microprocessor-based Self-Tuner. The principles and characteristics of sampled-data systems with regard to their effects on Self-Tuning are discussed. Various recursive-identification techniques are investigated. It is shown that a Square-Root algorithm based on Least-Squares (LS) identification technique is suitable for implementation on an 8 bit microprocessor. Various methods to track the changing parameters of a process are discussed and a scheme for employing a dynamic forgetting-factor in an LS estimation algorithm is presented.Current Self-Tuning techniques are described. From a study of Self-Tuning and Model Reference Adaptive Control schemes, it is demonstrated that the two approaches can be unified. A new Self- Tuning strategy, herein termed Model-Referenced Minimum Variance (MRMV) Self-Tuner is proposed as a general case of Minimum Variance Self-Tuners. It is shown that this new scheme results in softer control and more acceptable practical performance.A simulation package for studying various Minimum-Variance Self-Tuners is presented. Simulation results of Self-Tuning control over various plants dynamics are given. The simulation results verify the advantages of the proposed MRMV control scheme. The hardware aspects of a Self-Tuner, based on the Z80 microprocessor are described. Two methods of performing complex arithmetic, using software routines and a 'number-cruncher* chip are presented and compared. Due to the self-compensating nature of the algorithms, it is shown that undemanding analogue interfacing requirements only are necessary. The assemble language programs to use the described hardware and implement the discussed Minimum-Variance controllers are presented. The memory requirements and the execution speed of the routines are also given. The concept of 'mathematical noise injection' is introduced as a cure for possible ill-conditioning problems associated with the covariance matrix in the etimation routine.Various experiments are performed with the implemented Self- Tuner to control different analogue processes and the results are given. It is shown that the 'tuning' of the Self-Tuners (limited to the choice of 3 or 4 parameters) is not critical and good performance may be obtained with a wide choice of the tuning parameters. The application of Self-Tuners to the ship-steering problem is discussed. Several experiments on board two similar cargo ships are performed and the results suggest that Self-Tuners could be used for this purpose with significant advantage.

Book Transactional Memory Foundations Algorithms Tools and Applications

Download or read book Transactional Memory Foundations Algorithms Tools and Applications written by Rachid Guerraoui and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-12-29 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of multi-core architectures and cloud-computing has brought parallel programming into the mainstream of software development. Unfortunately, writing scalable parallel programs using traditional lock-based synchronization primitives is well known to be a hard, time consuming and error-prone task, mastered by only a minority of specialized programmers. Building on the familiar abstraction of atomic transactions, Transactional Memory (TM) promises to free programmers from the complexity of conventional synchronization schemes, simplifying the development and verification of concurrent programs, enhancing code reliability, and boosting productivity. Over the last decade TM has been subject to intense research on a broad range of aspects including hardware and operating systems support, language integration, as well as algorithms and theoretical foundations. On the industrial side, the major players of the software and hardware markets have been up-front in the research and development of prototypal products providing support for TM systems. This has recently led to the introduction of hardware TM implementations on mainstream commercial microprocessors and to the integration of TM support for the world’s leading open source compiler. In such a vast inter-disciplinary domain, the Euro-TM COST Action (IC1001) has served as a catalyzer and a bridge for the various research communities looking at disparate, yet subtly interconnected, aspects of TM. This book emerged from the idea having Euro-TM experts compile recent results in the TM area in a single and consistent volume. Contributions have been carefully selected and revised to provide a broad coverage of several fundamental issues associated with the design and implementation of TM systems, including their theoretical underpinnings and algorithmic foundations, programming language integration and verification tools, hardware supports, distributed TM systems, self-tuning mechanisms, as well as lessons learnt from building complex TM-based applications.
