In 1998 alone, people lost 50 billion dollars in legal betting and it is estimated that illegal wagering is twice that amount. A recent government report, based on the broadest population survey, concludes that the lifetime and pathological gamblers in the U.S. range between 4 and 10 million persons and is growing. If we include the families affected by problem gambling then the potential impact is indeed prodigious. Virtually no community in the U.S. and Canada is left untouched by entertainment or problem gambling. Treating problem gambling has evolved from a small group of practitioners in the 1980's working in specialty impatient units into an international enterprise that affects the caseload of many mental health professionals. Owing to its quiet origins, problem gambling treatment strategies are not well known throughout the clinical community. Consequently the average clinician is him/herself "learning as they go." Although the inability to self-regulate has been identified as a key factor contributing to gambling problems (Baumeister, Heatherton, & Tice, 1994), little research has been conducted to understand the relationship between self-regulation and gambling. The aim of the dissertation research was to identify whether or not problem gamblers have less self-regulatory ability than do non-problem gamblers and, if so, which self-regulatory mechanisms break down for problem gamblers. In particular problem gamblers' ability to (a) implement discrepancy reduction skills (i.e., an inability to detect a discrepancy between one's goals and one's behaviour); (b) set goals; or (c) self-monitor were investigated. Study 1 was designed to investigate the relationship between self-regulatory ability and problem gambling behaviour. It was found that problem gamblers have less self-regulatory ability than do non-problem gamblers. As problem gambling scores increased, reported self-control scores decreased. Study 2 was designed to understand whether or not the ability to implement discrepancy reduction skills breaks down for problem gamblers when engaged in gambling behaviour. Problem gamblers who gambled persisted at an impossible tracing task for longer than did problem gamblers who did not gamble. Study 3 was designed to understand whether or not the ability to set appropriate goals plays a role in problem gambling. Results indicate that at-risk and problem gamblers may be underregulating because of goal fluctuation. That is, feeling an intense urge to gamble may result in more positive thinking about gambling and, subsequently, make it difficult to set appropriate gambling goals. Study 4 was designed to understand whether or not the ability to self-monitor plays a role in problem gambling. Participants reported lowered self-awareness while gambling. Problem gamblers also reported being in greater dissociative-like states while gambling.

Book excerpt: Like in the case of drugs, gambling hijacks reward circuits in a brain which is not prepared to receive such intense stimulation. Dopamine is normally released in response to reward and uncertainty in order to allow animals to stay alive in their environment – where rewards are relatively unpredictable. In this case, behavior is regulated by environmental feedbacks, leading animals to persevere or to give up. In contrast, drugs provide a direct, intense pharmacological stimulation of the dopamine system that operates independently of environmental feedbacks, and hence causes “motivational runaways”. With respect to gambling, the confined environment experienced by gamblers favors the emergence of excitatory conditioned cues, so that positive feedbacks take over negative feedbacks. Although drugs and gambling may act differently, their abnormal activation of reward circuitry generates an underestimation of negative consequences and promotes the development of addictive/compulsive behavior. In Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease, dopamine-related therapies may disrupt these feedbacks on dopamine signalling, potentially leading to various addictions, including pathological gambling. The goal of this Research Topic is to further our understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the development of pathological gambling.
