Participants were 280 mathematically gifted students attending Olympic Mathematics enrichment courses in Hong Kong. Motivated Strategy for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) is the main instrument used and correlation and regression analyses were carried out. Results indicated that SRL (mainly composed of metacognitive self-regulation and cognitive strategies use) was a significant predictor for academic performance of senior (grade 8 and 9) mathematically gifted students, but not for that of the junior students (grade 6). This difference might be attributed to the higher demands of SRL in the study of higher grade Olympic Mathematics. Besides, motivation (comprising self-efficacy and intrinsic value) was found to have significantly contributed to the use of SRL of both senior and junior mathematically gifted students. As SRL was shown to be important in the learning of Olympic Mathematics of mathematically gifted students, it is recommended that SRL enhancement program should be considered to be a necessary training component embedded in the mathematics enrichment program of mathematically gifted students. ii DOI: 10.5353/th_b3723509 Subjects: Learning strategies Motivation in education - China - Hong Kong Mathematics - Study and teaching (Secondary) - China - Hong Kong Gifted children - China - Hong Kong

Abstract: Gifted students are those who demonstrate above average ability and excellence in performance in one or more areas of endeavour. These students need learning opportunities that are challenging and appropriate in pace, depth and complexity. Information and communication technology (ICT) in the form of online learning can provide an alternative approach that presents suitable challenges. Over the past decade studies have confirmed the benefits of using ICT to support gifted students. To participate successfully in online learning, students require a high degree of self-regulation. This study aimed to explore the online self-regulated learning of mathematically talented students. The objectives of the study were: (i) to obtain a better understanding of the self-regulated learning strategies employed by these students; (ii) to investigate the influence of self-efficacy on self-regulated learning; (iii) to examine a viable online course design that fully supports the engagement of students; and (iv) to investigate how supports from teachers, parents and peers can influence gifted students'' engagement in online courses. The research comprised two studies using a quantitative approach. Study One aimed to develop and validate a version of the Online Self-Regulated Learning Questionnaire (OLSQ) translated into Chinese. This instrument enabled the close examination of online self-regulated learning, and was a reliable measure for use in Study Two. In Study One, the informants are 412 Hong Kong students (age range 9 to 15 years). Data collected indicates that the Chinese version of OLSQ is valid and reliable for use with this population and age range, and can be used with confidence in future research into online learning. The translated Chinese version of OLSQ is now available to other researchers for future studies with Chinese students. In this study OLSQ confirmed that online self-regulated learning could be considered in terms of six dimensions: Goal Setting, Environmental Structuring, Task Strategies, Time Management, Help Seeking and Self-assessment. All the dimensions were positively inter-correlated. Study Two investigated the extent to which self-efficacy exerts a mediating influence on the effects of social support and course design when learning mathematics online. A sample of 374 mathematically talented students (age range 9 to 15 years) provided self-reports on (i) their use of online self-regulated learning strategies, (ii) estimates of their own self-efficacy, (iii) details of available social support, and (iv) perceptions of course design. Participants were involved in an online mathematics course offered by the Education Bureau in Hong Kong. In Study Two, a structural model was developed to illustrate the influence of social support, course design and self-efficacy on the online self-regulated learning of mathematically talented students. Several scales were developed: Social Support Scale for Online Learning (SSSOL), Design of Online Course Scale (DOCS), and Self-Efficacy Scale for Mathematically Talented Online Learners (SESMTOL). Findings indicated that course design and supports from teachers, parents and peers directly influenced online self-regulated learning, with self-efficacy acting as a mediator. These findings will be of value in identifying positive ways of promoting and supporting self-regulated learning in gifted s

Book Supporting Self Regulated Learning and Student Success in Online Courses

Download or read book Supporting Self Regulated Learning and Student Success in Online Courses written by Glick, Danny and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2023-03-07 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students who self-regulate are more likely to improve their academic performance, find value in their learning process, and continue to be effective lifelong learners. However, online students often struggle to self-regulate, which may contribute to lower academic performance. Likewise, less experienced online teachers who are in the process of implementing—or have implemented—a shift from in-person to distance learning may struggle to enable their students to employ effective self-regulation techniques. Supporting Self-Regulated Learning and Student Success in Online Courses examines current theoretical frameworks, research projects, and empirical studies related to the design, implementation, and evaluation of self-regulated learning models and interventions in online courses and discusses their implications. Covering key topics such as online course design, student retention, and learning support, this reference work is ideal for administrators, policymakers, researchers, academicians, practitioners, scholars, instructors, and students.

Book Multiple Competencies and Self regulated Learning

Download or read book Multiple Competencies and Self regulated Learning written by Farideh Salili and published by IAP. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although cultural diversity in classrooms is hardly a new phenomenon, its influences on teaching and learning are increasingly discussed. Cultural diversity could lead to better learning and democracy outcomes. However, it also poses challenges for educators and schools. For example, research has revealed marked cultural differences in motivation, learning attitudes, thinking styles and school achievement. Attempts have been made to assure teaching and learning quality by designing standardized curricula and giving standardized tests. However, it is questionable whether standardized tests could capture the diverse aptitudes and skills students with different cultural experiences bring to the classroom. It is also question-able whether a standardized curriculum would lead to positive learningoutcomes for all. In 1998, we convened a conference in the University of Hong Kong, and invited experts from different parts of globe to discuss how to apply psychology to enhance learning and teaching quality. Probably because of the cultural diversity of the conference participants, multicultural education emerged as one of the dominant themes in the conference. For example, in the Opening Address, Robert Sternberg argued for the importance of cultural sensitivity in ability testing. In another keynote address, Martin Maehr discussed the implications of motivation research for designing an optimal achievement environment for culturally diverse students. Professor Sternberg’s paper is included in this volume, and Professor Maehr’s article was published in a previous volume we edited (Student Motivation: The Culture and Context of Learning, Plenum, 2001). The contributors of this volume include psychologists and education researchers from Africa, Asia, Australia and North, and some of them have extensive experiences in multicultural education. Despite their diverse cultural and professional background, the contributors agree that to meet the challenges posed by cultural diversity, educators need to have the sensitivity to multiplicity of student abilities in aptitude and achievement assessment.

Book Self Regulated Learning Theory and Application Penerbit USM

Download or read book Self Regulated Learning Theory and Application Penerbit USM written by Melissa Ng. Lee Yen Abdullah and published by Penerbit USM. This book was released on with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-regulated learning is recognized as one of the most essential skills that students should possess in this information age. Nevertheless, most students are accustomed to the conventional teacher-centered way of learning, thus, they are not competent at self-regulated learning. A Self-Management Tool was developed to guide and enhance students' usage of self-regulated learning strategies. The tool comprises three components; Information-Management Tool, Personal-Management Tool and a Teacher's Manual. A quasi-experimental study was conducted to test its effectiveness and the details of this empirical research were documented in this monograph. The monograph is divided into six chapters, with detailed descriptions on the research methodology. The Self-Management Tool was found to be effective in improving students' self-regulated learning. The findings have significant research and educational implications. Recommendations for future research are included in the final chapter of the monograph.

Book Self Regulated Learning and Academic Achievement

Download or read book Self Regulated Learning and Academic Achievement written by Barry J. Zimmerman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together internationally known researchers representing different theoretical perspectives on students' self-regulation of learning. Diverse theories on how students become self-regulated learners are compared in terms of their conceptual origins, scientific form, research productivity, and pedagogical effectiveness. This is the only comprehensive comparison of diverse classical theories of self-regulated learning in print. The first edition of this text, published in 1989, presented descriptions of such differing perspectives as operant, phenomenological, social learning, volitional, Vygotskian, and constructivist theories. In this new edition, the same prominent editors and authors reassess these classic models in light of a decade of very productive research. In addition, an information processing perspective is included, reflecting its growing prominence. Self-regulation models have proven especially appealing to teachers, coaches, and tutors looking for specific recommendations regarding how students activate, alter, and sustain their learning practices. Techniques for enhancing these processes have been studied with considerable success in tutoring sessions, computer learning programs, coaching sessions, and self-directed practice sessions. The results of these applications are discussed in this new edition. The introductory chapter presents a historical overview of research and a theoretical framework for comparing and contrasting the theories described in the following chapters, all of which follow a common organizational format. This parallel format enables the book to function like an authored textbook rather than a typical edited volume. The final chapter offers an historical assessment of changes in theory and trends for future research. This volume is especially relevant for students and professionals in educational psychology, school psychology, guidance and counseling, developmental psychology, child and family development, as well as for students in general teacher education.
