Book Public Spirited Citizenship

Download or read book Public Spirited Citizenship written by Ralph Ketcham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any searching look at the theory and practice of citizenship in the United States today is bewildering and disconcerting. Despite earnest concern for participation, access, and "leverage," there is a widespread perception that nothing citizens do has much meaning or influence. This book argues that for American democracy to work in the twenty-first century, renewed interest in teaching the nation's young citizens a sense of the public good is imperative. All of the nation's founders, especially Adams, Jefferson, Franklin, and Madison, addressed the question of whether and how a citizen can make a difference in the American political process. This concern harkens back even farther, to Locke, Erasmus, and Aristotle. Today, one obstacle to good citizenship is the social scientific turn in political science. Leaders in civic education in the twentieth century eschewed grand ideas and moral principles in favour of a focus on behaviourism and competitive, liberal politics. Another problem is the growing belief that the government has no business promoting the public good through the support of religious, educational, or cultural efforts.Ralph Ketcham vividly depicts the relationship of private self-interest and public-spirited action as these pertain to citizenship and good government. This is an enlightening book for the general reader, as well as for students, professional social scientists, and political philosophers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of American Government: For Use in City and Country Schools in Connection With the Gill School City and Other Organizations for Self-Government The necessity for this Sketch Of American govern ment has arisen from the needs of the School City. The ordinary text-books are too formidable for our purpose. This is especially true in that great majority Of schools, whose teachers have never before studied civics. To put within reach Of teachers as well as pupils, the requisite information concerning American government on which to base the organization Of this self-govern ing institution, it seemed necessary to make a brief outline Of the forms and duties of popular government beginning with the national government and leading down through the state, the county, the town, the school district, the village and the city to the duties and organization Of the School City itself. Book A Socially Critical View Of The Self Managing School

Download or read book A Socially Critical View Of The Self Managing School written by John Smyth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-09-21 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shift from the model of central government educational control to school- based management has been widely adopted and acclaimed and has created the general impression of increased democracy and participation.; The international contributors to this book tackle this important policy issue and look behind the scenes of the moves towards school self- management. They investigate the phenomenon of the self-managing school, Why It Is Happening Now, What Is The Truth Behind This Notion And The problems which lie behind devolution and self-management.; The self- managing school, it is claimed is not about "grassroots democracy" or "parent participation" but absolutely the reverse and this contradiction is best understood in terms of the ideology of the New Right. Enlightened and informed perspectives of the reality behind school self-management suggest that the devolution of power is only superficial. Hierarchies continue to exist as unequally funded schools which perpetuate class, gender and ethnic divisions. The mechanism involved promotes the Survivial Of The Fittest Through Notions Of Choice.; For Those Involved in school management and education generally, this book should provide a useful insight into the struggle surrounding the control of schooling.

Book Preparing for Citizenship

Download or read book Preparing for Citizenship written by Ralph Mosher and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1994-10-21 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding democracy, learning to be democratic and to value democracy are critical competencies to be developed by all Americans. In the present debate about what knowledge is of most worth in the public school, these civic competencies are seen as second in importance only to the development of critical thinking. They are typically, however, honored more in commencement rhetoric than in school programs or practices; their actualization falls far short of their ascribed importance. The authors argue that critical opportunities for democratic development occur in the day-to-day life of the schools. It follows that all grade levels should participate in the creation of the constitution of the school and classrooms, the justice structure of the school (its disciplinary code, norms, and adjudication), the policy-making of the school, and in the understanding of the school as a social laboratory. The authors demonstrate the effectiveness of such a program by reporting some two decades of applied research on democratic schools which have realized some of these outcomes.
