Book Expectations and Actions

Download or read book Expectations and Actions written by Norman T. Feather and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1982, this book examines the current status of expectancy-value models in psychology. The focus is upon cognitive models that relate action to the perceived attractiveness or aversiveness of expected consequences. A person’s behavior is seen to bear some relation to the expectations the person holds and the subjective value of the consequences that might occur following the action. Despite widespread interest in the expectancy-value (valence) approach at the time, there was no book that looked at its current status and discussed its strengths and its weaknesses, using contributions from some of the theorists who were involved in its original and subsequent development and from others who were influenced by it or had cause to examine the approach closely. This book was planned to meet this need. The chapters in this book relate to such areas as achievement motivation, attribution theory, information feedback, organizational psychology, the psychology of values and attitudes, and decision theory and in some cases they advance the expectancy-value approach further and, in other cases, point to some of its deficiencies.

Book excerpt: This unusual volume begins with a historical overview of the growth of attribution theory, setting the stage for the three broad domains of application that are addressed in the remainder of the book. These include applications to: achievement strivings in the classroom and the sports domain; issues of mental health such as analyses of stress and coping and interpretations of psychotherapy; and personal and business conflict such as buyer- seller disagreement, marital discord, dissension in the workplace, and international strife. Because the chapters in Attribution Theory are more research-based than practice- oriented, this book will be of great interest and value to an audience of applied psychologists.

Drawing upon an international field of established and new researchers, the series presents both theoretical and applied work looking at individual difference in human performance. The re-appraisal of self perception is considered as part of the development of new thinking in the theory of self-reference. This includes models of self from the United States and the United Kingdom. The book goes on to explore recent research from around the globe. Not only are studies from Australia, Norway, and the United States examined but research from Greece and Kuwait is also explored. Varied topics are covered, including the effects of gender, self-esteem, and pupil self-perception in the academic context. Set within the framework of a conceptual synthesis of the research, the book offers a contemporary review of current thinking in the field. The contributors provide recent, relevant, and alternative perspectives for psychologists and applied scientists.

Book Elements of Applied Psychology

Download or read book Elements of Applied Psychology written by Peter Spurgeon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1994, Elements of Applied Psychology provided an introductory survey of the major aspects of applied psychology at the time for students of psychology as a main or ancillary subject. It was the first text to investigate the pressures created by this increased interest in applied psychology, offering insight into the factors which had influenced its patterns and direction. The book comprises 18 chapters, covering both the well-established fields of professional psychology, such as educational, clinical/counselling and occupational/organisational psychology, and areas of developing application at the time, including applied cognitive psychology, economic and health psychology, and psychology and law. The text will still be of value to students considering possible career areas in psychology, students on psychology courses pondering choice of specialism and those students taking psychology as a subsidiary subject in one of the areas covered. It is also consistent with the increasing link between the academic community and practitioners. It will serve to increase the understanding and exchange.
