Book Internet based Attributional Retraining and Self esteem

Download or read book Internet based Attributional Retraining and Self esteem written by Kyle Hubbard and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Attributional retraining (AR) is a remedial intervention that targets students' maladaptive causal attributions for poor performance by encouraging controllable attributions that correspond to academic success. AR interventions are derived from Weiner's attribution theory (Weiner, 1985, 1995, 2006) that outlines how performance and achievement striving are influenced by the attributions individuals make about evaluative outcomes. Recent findings indicate that post-secondary students with high self-esteem experience unanticipated declines in academic performance following in-person AR. With a sample of 274 American university students, the current study sought to determine if this iatrogenic effect would be replicated using two versions of a recently developed internet-based AR program. Students' sessional grade point averages and rates of voluntary course withdrawal were measured longitudinally across three semesters following the intervention. Hypotheses were tested using 2 (low/high self-esteem) x 3 (Aptitude Test AR, Writing AR, No AR) x 3 (time: Winter 2007, Fall 2007, Winter 2008) repeated-measures analyses of covariance. Results revealed that the aptitude test AR format initially hurt high self-esteem students' performance, but that this iatrogenic effect reversed itself in the following semester. No effect was found for low or high self-esteem students in the writing-based AR condition. Future directions for internet-based AR research are discussed." --

Book The Impact of Self Efficacy on the Academic Success of Online RN BSN Students

Download or read book The Impact of Self Efficacy on the Academic Success of Online RN BSN Students written by Tamera Nutter and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to examine the impact of self-efficacy on the academic success of online RN-BSN students. This quantitative, retrospective, quasi-experimental designed study utilized a convenience sample of online RN-BSN students. A pre- and post-course test to measure changes in self-efficacy was used, and these results were then compared to student outcomes measured by on-time progress at the end of the first six-month term. Demographic variables included gender, age, ethnicity, and current employment. Coursework specific to self efficacy will be addressed as part of the larger course, and four components of self-efficacy will be measured in the pre- and post-CSASS survey: enactive mastery; vicarious experiences; social persuasion; and, emotional experience (Farr, Rotermund, Ho, Radwin, & Robles, 2011). Data were analyzed for both 73 pairs and 263 pairs (not taking and taking the C820 course) of students, utilizing frequencies to analyze demographic data and a chi square test to determine any impact of self-efficacy. A paired samples t-test was used to determine if there was any statistical difference in academic success as measured by first-term OTP between students who did not take and students who did take the C820 course.

Book Health Promotion in Health Care Vital Theories and Research

Download or read book Health Promotion in Health Care Vital Theories and Research written by Gørill Haugan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-11 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access textbook represents a vital contribution to global health education, offering insights into health promotion as part of patient care for bachelor’s and master’s students in health care (nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, radiotherapists, social care workers etc.) as well as health care professionals, and providing an overview of the field of health science and health promotion for PhD students and researchers. Written by leading experts from seven countries in Europe, America, Africa and Asia, it first discusses the theory of health promotion and vital concepts. It then presents updated evidence-based health promotion approaches in different populations (people with chronic diseases, cancer, heart failure, dementia, mental disorders, long-term ICU patients, elderly individuals, families with newborn babies, palliative care patients) and examines different health promotion approaches integrated into primary care services. This edited scientific anthology provides much-needed knowledge, translating research into guidelines for practice. Today’s medical approaches are highly developed; however, patients are human beings with a wholeness of body-mind-spirit. As such, providing high-quality and effective health care requires a holistic physical-psychological-social-spiritual model of health care is required. A great number of patients, both in hospitals and in primary health care, suffer from the lack of a holistic oriented health approach: Their condition is treated, but they feel scared, helpless and lonely. Health promotion focuses on improving people’s health in spite of illnesses. Accordingly, health care that supports/promotes patients’ health by identifying their health resources will result in better patient outcomes: shorter hospital stays, less re-hospitalization, being better able to cope at home and improved well-being, which in turn lead to lower health-care costs. This scientific anthology is the first of its kind, in that it connects health promotion with the salutogenic theory of health throughout the chapters. the authors here expand the understanding of health promotion beyond health protection and disease prevention. The book focuses on describing and explaining salutogenesis as an umbrella concept, not only as the key concept of sense of coherence.
