Book Self efficacy Beliefs of Former Probationary Students

Download or read book Self efficacy Beliefs of Former Probationary Students written by Abraham Barouch-Gilbert and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative study explored the experiences of thirteen former probationary students to better understand how their self-efficacy influenced their academic choices that contributed to academic achievement as well as the manner in which their self-efficacy beliefs were developed. For this reason I drew upon self-efficacy theoretical framework. When sharing their experiences of being classified on academic probation and self-efficacy development, students described support as playing an important role in their academic achievement and success. Within support, encouragement (social persuasions), and learning/ guidance from others (vicarious experiences) emerged. Further, participants' academic achievements (e.g., good grades on tests, paper, and or assignments) and emotional states during the semester seemed to strengthen their efficacy beliefs. This study adds to emerging research related to students' experiences when on academic probation by emphasizing their self-efficacy development. Findings are substantial in that they offer understandings related to student persistence and retention in higher education.

This book was released on 2022-10-19 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research suggests that as many as a quarter of all undergraduate students may find themselves on academic probation during their collegiate years. If students on probation choose to return to their institutions the semester following notification, they find themselves in a unique transitional period between poor academic performance and either dismissal or recovery. Effectively supporting students through this transition may help to decrease equity gaps in higher education. As recent literature implies, the same demographic factors that affect students’ retention and persistence rates (e.g., gender, race and ethnicity, age) also affect the rate at which students find themselves on academic probation. This book serves as a resource for practitioners and institutional leaders. The volume presents a variety of interventions and institutional strategies for supporting the developmental and emotional needs of students on probation in the first year and beyond. The chapters in this book are the result of years of dedication and passion for supporting students on probation by the individual chapter authors. While the chapters reflect a culmination of combined decades of personal experiences and education, collectively they amount to the beginning of a conversation long past due. Scholarship on the impact of academic recovery models on student success and persistence is limited. Historically, attention and resources have been directed toward establishing and strengthening the first-year experience, sophomore programs, and student-success efforts to prevent students from ending up on academic probation. However, a focus on preventative measures without a consideration of academic recovery program design considering the successes of these programs is futile. This volume should be of interest to academics and practitioners focused on creating or refining institutional policies and interventions for students on academic probation. The aim is to provide readers with the language, tools, and theoretical points of view to advocate for and to design, reform, and/or execute high-quality, integrated academic recovery programs on campus. Historically, students on probation have been an understudied and underserved population, and this volume serves as a call to action.

Book Using Self Efficacy for Improving Retention and Success of Diverse Student Populations

Download or read book Using Self Efficacy for Improving Retention and Success of Diverse Student Populations written by Herron, Jeffrey and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2022-10-14 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the many strides that have been made in diversity, equity, and inclusion, many educational systems across the world continue to struggle with equality in education for all students regardless of race, gender, or socioeconomic status. This struggle within education inevitably negatively impacts society, as only select groups are given the opportunity to excel. It is essential for school systems to be proactive when dealing with student learning outcomes and student retention for all student populations. Using Self-Efficacy for Improving Retention and Success of Diverse Student Populations discusses the best practices in supporting students during their educational journey and examines the current efforts to improve student retention. Covering topics such as computing education, academic counseling, and student success prediction, this premier reference source is an excellent resource for faculty and administrators of both K-12 and higher education, pre-service teachers, teacher educators, school counselors, sociologists, librarians, researchers, and academicians.

Book The Effects of Academic Success Courses on Academic Self efficacy Among Students in a Comprehensive Public Four year Regional University

Download or read book The Effects of Academic Success Courses on Academic Self efficacy Among Students in a Comprehensive Public Four year Regional University written by Todd J. Hampton and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of academic success courses on the academic self-efficacy of students on academic probation who are enrolled at a comprehensive public four-year regional university. Following a grounded theory case study methodology, historical data, vis-à-vis 234 previous student writing assignments, were examined. The purpose of the data analysis was to explore student perceptions relative to the effectiveness of academic success courses in increasing academic self-efficacy beliefs. Students identified interpersonal and external factors that led to increased academic self-efficacy beliefs. The interpersonal factors included time management practices and using what was defined as creator language and mentalities. External factors that helped the students were meeting with their professors outside of class and participation in activities and services on campus. Specifically, students reported positive changes in their academic self-efficacy beliefs through a discovery that they were not the only students who struggle academically, a belief in self, increased confidence, and a sense of pride. Notably, while the specific factors that influenced student self-efficacy were consistent across student groups, male and female students tended to write about their future plans for success differently. The majority of male students wrote using passive language, whereas most of the female students used active language in their writing. Finally, a theoretical model is presented along with recommendations for practice as well as future research.

Book Building the Self Efficacy Beliefs of English Language Learners and Teachers

Download or read book Building the Self Efficacy Beliefs of English Language Learners and Teachers written by Mark Wyatt and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building the Self-Efficacy Beliefs of English Language Learners and Teachers explores, juxtaposes and bridges two fields of research that have developed separately: the self-efficacy beliefs of English language learners and the self-efficacy beliefs of English language teachers. The aim is to expand understanding in each field and highlight how the two areas can mutually inform each other. This should encourage fresh perspectives, providing direction for researchers, and improving learning, teaching, and teacher education. Empirical research suggests that English language learners and teachers who believe they can fulfil a task are more likely to succeed than those who believe they cannot. Based on a deep understanding of how self-efficacy beliefs are formed and developed, this book illustrates how such beliefs can be supported and researched amongst English language learners and teachers. Bringing together the work of educators and researchers working in contexts including Algeria, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Iran, Israel, Japan, Türkiye, the UK, the USA, and Vietnam, this volume includes meta-analyses largely focusing on quantitative data and empirical studies employing qualitative approaches and mixed methods. Studies included examine factors impacting the development of language teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs and investigate domain-specific dimensions of the self-efficacy beliefs of English language learners and teachers. This rigorous and original volume will appeal to an international readership of scholars, teachers, teacher educators, and researchers with interests in language education, teacher education, TESOL, linguistics, and educational psychology.

Book Self Efficacy Beliefs of Adolescents

Download or read book Self Efficacy Beliefs of Adolescents written by Tim Urdan and published by IAP. This book was released on 2006-02-01 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of the psychological construct of self-efficacy is widely acknowledged as one of the most important developments in the history of psychology. Today, it is simply not possible to explain phenomena such as human motivation, learning, self-regulation, and accomplishment without discussing the role played by self-efficacy beliefs. In this, the fifth volume of our series on adolescence and education, we focus on the self-efficacy beliefs of adolescents. We are proud and fortunate to be able to bring together the most prominent voices in the study of self-efficacy, including that of the Father of Social Cognitive Theory and of self-efficacy, Professor Albert Bandura. It is our hope, and our expectation, that this volume will become required reading for all students and scholars in the areas of adolescence and of motivation and, of course, for all who play a pivotal role in the education and care of youth.

Book Making the Most of College

Download or read book Making the Most of College written by Richard J. Light and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2004-05-30 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do some students make the most of college, while others struggle and look back on years of missed deadlines and missed opportunities? What choices can students make, and what can teachers and university leaders do, to improve more students’ experiences and help them achieve the most from their time and money? Most important, how is the increasing diversity on campus—cultural, racial, and religious—affecting education? What can students and faculty do to benefit from differences, and even learn from the inevitable moments of misunderstanding and awkwardness? From his ten years of interviews with Harvard seniors, Richard Light distills encouraging—and surprisingly practical—answers to fundamental questions. How can you choose classes wisely? What’s the best way to study? Why do some professors inspire and others leave you cold? How can you connect what you discover in class to all you’re learning in the rest of life? Light suggests, for instance: studying in pairs or groups can be more productive than studying alone; the first and most important skill to learn is time management; supervised independent research projects and working internships offer the most learning and the greatest challenges; and encounters with students of different religions can be simultaneously the most taxing and most illuminating of all the experiences with a diverse student body. Filled with practical advice, illuminated with stories of real students’ self-doubts, failures, discoveries, and hopes, Making the Most of College is a handbook for academic and personal success.

Book Academic Advising Approaches

Download or read book Academic Advising Approaches written by Jayne K. Drake and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-08-14 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strong academic advising has been found to be a key contributor to student persistence (Center for Public Education, 2012), and many are expected to play an advising role, including academic, career, and faculty advisors; counselors; tutors; and student affairs staff. Yet there is little training on how to do so. Various advising strategies exist, each of which has its own proponents. To serve increasingly complex higher education institutions around the world and their diverse student cohorts, academic advisors must understand multiple advising approaches and adroitly adapt them to their own student populations. Academic Advising Approaches outlines a wide variety of proven advising practices and strategies that help students master the necessary skills to achieve their academic and career goals. This book embeds theoretical bases within practical explanations and examples advisors can use in answering fundamental questions such as: What will make me a more effective advisor? What can I do to enhance student success? What conversations do I need to initiate with my colleagues to improve my unit, campus, and profession? Linking theory with practice, Academic Advising Approaches provides an accessible reference useful to all who serve in an advising role. Based upon accepted theories within the social sciences and humanities, the approaches covered include those incorporating developmental, learning-centered, appreciative, proactive, strengths-based, Socratic, and hermeneutic advising as well as those featuring advising as teaching, motivational interviewing, self-authorship, and advising as coaching. All advocate relationship-building as a means to encourage students to take charge of their own academic, personal, and professional progress. This book serves as the practice-based companion to Academic Advising: A Comprehensive Handbook, also from NACADA. Whereas the handbook addresses the concepts advisors and advising administrators need to know in order to build a success advising program, Academic Advising Approaches explains the delivery strategies successful advisors can use to help students make the most of their college experience.

Book Career Decision Self efficacy Among Students Entering Post secondary Career and Technical Education

Download or read book Career Decision Self efficacy Among Students Entering Post secondary Career and Technical Education written by Kathleen Fosbinder Smith and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular models of traditional student persistence show a positive relationship to social and academic integration at the learning institution. However, non-traditional students are less integrated socially and academically and are more likely to leave school for reasons beyond the institution's control. Pajares (2002) linked self-efficacy beliefs to academic self-regulation and found that students who believe they are capable of performing the task at hand use more cognitive strategies, work harder, persist longer, and find ways around obstacles. This field study examined popular models of student persistence for traditional and for non-traditional students, along with three years of attrition records at the Tennessee College of Applied Technology in Dickson, Tennessee. It is hypothesized that career decision self-efficacy (the degree to which a student feels confident in his or her choice of training program) is predictive of institutional integration and student success in career/technical education.
