Book Moral Identity and Self Discovery

Download or read book Moral Identity and Self Discovery written by Verl Allen Anderson and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2021 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We live in a time when trust in leaders at all levels of society has declined, when students at colleges and universities openly acknowledge that they cheat, and when the reputations of even the most admired leaders have been sullied by misconduct. It is a time when the future of tomorrow's generation appears to be growing dimmer and those who have passed on burdens that will have to be borne have clearly neglected their moral responsibilities. Fixing the blame is far less important than fixing the problem. The root cause of today's concerns and tomorrow's future lies in the failure of those who claimed to be trusted leaders to demonstrate personal integrity. This book introduces the concept of "moral identity" as a metric for leaders and organizations of all types to reexamine their moral responsibility. We suggest that moral identity provides a compass for leaders and organizations to adopt in rethinking their obligations to themselves, to their associates, to their customers, to society, and to future generations. The book includes a metric for personal self-assessment, for guiding individuals and organizations, and for establishing a standard for evaluating those who aspire to lead. This book takes a harsh look at the failings of leaders and provides a meaningful resource to those who are willing to lead society to rethink its future"--

Download or read book Sources of the Self written by Charles Taylor and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1992-03-01 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this extensive inquiry into the sources of modern selfhood, Charles Taylor demonstrates just how rich and precious those resources are. The modern turn to subjectivity, with its attendant rejection of an objective order of reason, has led—it seems to many—to mere subjectivism at the mildest and to sheer nihilism at the worst. Many critics believe that the modern order has no moral backbone and has proved corrosive to all that might foster human good. Taylor rejects this view. He argues that, properly understood, our modern notion of the self provides a framework that more than compensates for the abandonment of substantive notions of rationality. The major insight of Sources of the Self is that modern subjectivity, in all its epistemological, aesthetic, and political ramifications, has its roots in ideas of human good. After first arguing that contemporary philosophers have ignored how self and good connect, the author defines the modern identity by describing its genesis. His effort to uncover and map our moral sources leads to novel interpretations of most of the figures and movements in the modern tradition. Taylor shows that the modern turn inward is not disastrous but is in fact the result of our long efforts to define and reach the good. At the heart of this definition he finds what he calls the affirmation of ordinary life, a value which has decisively if not completely replaced an older conception of reason as connected to a hierarchy based on birth and wealth. In telling the story of a revolution whose proponents have been Augustine, Montaigne, Luther, and a host of others, Taylor’s goal is in part to make sure we do not lose sight of their goal and endanger all that has been achieved. Sources of the Self provides a decisive defense of the modern order and a sharp rebuff to its critics.

Book The Gift of Being Yourself

Download or read book The Gift of Being Yourself written by David G. Benner and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2015-09-24 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Grant, Lord, that I may know myself that I may know thee." —Augustine Much is said in Christian circles about knowing God. But Christians throughout the ages have agreed that there cannot be deep knowledge of God without deep knowledge of the self. Discerning your true self is inextricably related to discerning God's purposes for you. Paradoxically, the more you become like Christ, the more you become authentically yourself. In this profound exploration of Christian identity, psychologist and spiritual director David G. Benner illuminates the spirituality of self-discovery. He exposes the false selves that you may hide behind and calls you to discover the true self that emerges from your uniqueness in Christ. Freeing you from illusions about yourself, Benner shows that self-understanding leads to the fulfillment of your God-given destiny and vocation. Rest assured, you need not try to be someone you are not. But you will deepen your experience of God through discovering the gift of being yourself. This expanded edition, one of three titles in The Spiritual Journey trilogy, includes a new epilogue and an experiential guide with questions for individual reflection or group discussion.

Young documents the methods he and others have used to acquire knowledge and shows that, far from being an obscure skill limited to aggressive autodidacts, ultralearning is a powerful tool anyone can use to improve their career, studies, and life. Ultralearning explores this fascinating subculture, shares a proven framework for a successful ultralearning project, and offers insights into how you can organize and exe - cute a plan to learn anything deeply and quickly, without teachers or budget-busting tuition costs. Book Discussions on Ego Identity

Download or read book Discussions on Ego Identity written by Jane Kroger and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identity has been a topical issue in both popular and social science literatures for the past forty years. The writings of Erik Erikson on the identity formation process of late adolescence have provided an important theoretical foundation to clinical, counseling, and educational practices. As the literature on adolescent development has burgeoned over the last three decades, so have efforts to understand, more systematically, the means by which young people find their occupational, religious, political, sexual and relational roles in life. One of the most popular research traditions to spring from Erikson's clinical observations has been the ego identity status approach developed by James Marcia. This approach has expanded Erikson's concept of identity to describe four distinct styles by which adolescents and adults deal with identity-defining issues. The present volume reflects the most recent efforts of social scientists who have contributed further to the work that Erikson and Marcia began -- an exhaustive analysis of the issues inherent in the adolescent identity formation process.
