Book Surface Diffusion

Download or read book Surface Diffusion written by Grazyna Antczak and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-10 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, this book unites the theory, experimental techniques and computational tools used to describe the diffusion of atoms, molecules and nanoparticles across metal surfaces. Starting with an outline of the formalism that describes diffusion on surfaces, the authors guide the reader through the principles of atomic movement, before moving on to diffusion under special circumstances, such as the presence of defects or foreign species. With an initial focus on the behaviour of single entities on a surface, later chapters address the movement of clusters of atoms and the interactions between adatoms. While there is a special emphasis on experimental work, attention is paid to the increasingly valuable contributions theoretical work has made in this field. This book has wide interdisciplinary appeal and is ideal for researchers in solid state physics, chemistry as well as materials science, and engineering.

Download or read book Diffusion in Solids written by A.S. Nowick and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diffusion in Solids: Recent Developments provides an overview of diffusion in crystalline solids. This book discusses the various aspects of the theory of diffusion. Organized into nine chapters, this volume starts with a discussion on the process of diffusion in solids. This book then examines the tools that supplement the conventional diffusion measurements, including electromigration, ionic conductivity, isotope effects, and vacancy wind effects. This text explores the molecular dynamic calculation by which the interatomic forces must be assumed. Other chapters discuss the method of measurement of the isotope effect on diffusion, which is the most powerful method of determining relevant information about the correlation factor. This volume extensively discusses diffusion in organic and amorphous materials, as well as interstitial diffusion in solids. The final chapter deals with ionic motion and diffusion in various groups of materials called fast ionic conductors. Solid-state physicists, materials scientists, physical chemists, and electrochemists will find this book extremely useful.

Book Self diffusion and Impurity Diffusion in Pure Metals

Download or read book Self diffusion and Impurity Diffusion in Pure Metals written by Gerhard Neumann and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-08-19 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diffusion in metals is an important phenomenon, which has many applications, for example in all kinds of steel and aluminum production, and in alloy formation (technical applications e.g. in superconductivity and semiconductor science). In this book the data on diffusion in metals are shown, both in graphs and in equations. Reliable data on diffusion in metals are required by researchers who try to make sense of results from all kinds of metallurgical experiments, and they are equally needed by theorists and computer modelers. The previous compilation dates from 1990, and measurements relying on the electron microprobe and the recent Rutherford backscattering technique were hardly taken into account there. This reference book, containing all results on self-diffusion and impurity diffusion in pure metals with an indication of their reliability, will be useful to everyone in this field for the theory, fundamental research and industrial applications covered. • Up-to-date and complete (including EPMA and RBS investigations) • Indication of reliability of the measurements • Reassessment of many early results • Data can easily be extracted from Tables and Graphs

Book An Atomic View of Cluster Diffusion on Metal Surfaces

Download or read book An Atomic View of Cluster Diffusion on Metal Surfaces written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field ion microscopy show a strong correlation between mobility and shape of small clusters on fcc(100) metal surfaces. For self-diffusion on Rh(100) this correlation lead to an oscillatory behavior in the activation energy of surface diffusion as a function of cluster size. Comparison of measured activation energies to theory indicate that the mechanism of cluster diffusion involves individual displacements of edge atoms (ie, perimeter diffusion). Rate-determining step in migration of clusters is partial detachment of one of the perimeter atoms. Relative ease of adatom motion along straight edges of stationary clusters also permits measurements of diffusion barriers at steps, which can be useful in interpretation of fractal vs compact island growth on fcc metal surfaces.

Book Surface Science

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Hudson
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2013-10-22
  • ISBN : 0080966969
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Surface Science written by John Hudson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The whole field of surface science is covered in this work. Starting with a description of the structure and thermodynamics of clean surfaces, the book goes on to discuss kinetic theory of gases and molecular beam formation. This is followed by a large section on gas-surface interactions, and another major section on energetic particle-surface interactions. The final chapter provides the background to crystal nucleation and growth. The approach adopted is interdisciplinary and slanted towards the experimental side, with practical analytical techniques being used to illustrate general principles.

Book excerpt: First-principles density functional calculations and corresponding experimental results underline the importance of basic chemical concepts, such as coordination, valence saturation and promotion-hybridization energetics, in understanding bonding and diffusion of atoms at and on metal surfaces. Several examples are reviewed, including outer-layer relaxations of clean hcp(0001) surfaces, liquid-metal-embrittlement energetics, separation energies of metal-adatom dimers, concerted substitutional self-diffusion on fcc(001) surfaces, and adsorption and diffusion barrier sites for adatoms near steps.
