Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-Determination as Voice addresses the relationship between Indigenous peoples' participation in international governance and the law of self-determination. Many states and international organizations have put in place institutional mechanisms for the express purpose of including Indigenous representatives in international policy-making and decision-making processes, as well as in the negotiation and drafting of international legal instruments. Indigenous peoples' rights have a higher profile in the UN system than ever before. This book argues that the establishment and use of mechanisms and policies to enable a certain level of Indigenous peoples' participation in international governance has become a widespread practice, and perhaps even one that is accepted as law. In theory, the law of self-determination supports this move, and it is arguably emerging as a rule of customary international law. However, ultimately the achievement of the ideal of full and effective participation, in a manner that would fulfil Indigenous peoples' right to self-determination, remains deferred.

Book Technologies for Self Determination for Youth with Developmental Disabilities Technologies for Voice

Download or read book Technologies for Self Determination for Youth with Developmental Disabilities Technologies for Voice written by James R. Skouge and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper focuses on "technologies for voice" that are related to the self-determination of youth with developmental disabilities. The authors describe a self-determination model that values family-focused, community-referenced pedagogies employing "new media" to give voice to youth and their families. In line with the adage that a picture is worth a thousand words, many youth and families find they are better able to convey their life situations and express their hopes and fears using multimedia (e.g., camcorders, voice recorders, digital cameras, PowerPoint) to find their voices in transition and IEP planning meetings. Systematic strategies are described to support teachers and other youth advocates to employ multimedia technologies as tools of self-determination. (Contains 6 tables.).

Book Restructuring Relations

Download or read book Restructuring Relations written by Rauna Kuokkanen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adopted in 2007, the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples establishes self-determination--including free, prior, and informed consent--as a foundational right and principle. Self-determination, both individual and collective, is among the most important and pressing issues for Indigenous women worldwide. Yet Indigenous women's interests have been overlooked in the formulation of Indigenous self-government, and existing studies of Indigenous self-government largely ignore issues of gender. As such, the current literature on Indigenous governance conceals patriarchal structures and power that create barriers for women to resources and participation in Indigenous societies. Drawing on Indigenous and feminist political and legal theory--as well as extensive participant interviews in Canada, Greenland, and Scandinavia-- this book argues that the current rights discourse and focus on Indigenous-state relations is too limited in scope to convey the full meaning of "self-determination" for Indigenous peoples. The book conceptualizes self-determination as a foundational value informed by the norm of integrity and suggests that Indigenous self-determination cannot be achieved without restructuring all relations of domination nor can it be secured in the absence of gender justice. As a foundational value, self-determination seeks to restructure all relations of domination, not only hegemonic relations with the state. Importantly, it challenges the opposition between "self-determination" and "gender" created and maintained by international law, Indigenous political discourse, and Indigenous institutions. Restructuring relations of domination further entails examining the gender regimes present in existing Indigenous self-government institutions, interrogating the relationship between Indigenous self-determination and gender violence, and considering future visions of Indigenous self-determination, such as rematriation of Indigenous governance and an independent statehood.

Download or read book Election Interference written by Jens David Ohlin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election produced the biggest political scandal in a generation, marking the beginning of an ongoing attack on democracy. In the run-up to the 2020 election, Russia was found to have engaged in more “information operations,” a practice that has been increasingly adopted by other countries. In Election Interference, Jens David Ohlin makes the case that these operations violate international law, not as a cyberwar or a violation of sovereignty, but as a profound assault on democratic values protected by the international legal order under the rubric of self-determination. He argues that, in order to confront this new threat to democracy, countries must prohibit outsiders from participating in elections, enhance transparency on social media platforms, and punish domestic actors who solicit foreign interference. This important book should be read by anyone interested in protecting election integrity in our age of social media disinformation.

Book Reclaiming Tom Longboat Indigenous Self Determination in Canadian Sport

Download or read book Reclaiming Tom Longboat Indigenous Self Determination in Canadian Sport written by Janice Forsyth and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-30 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reclaiming Tom Longboat recounts the history of Indigenous sport in Canada through the lens of the prestigious Tom Longboat Awards, shedding light on a significant yet overlooked aspect of Canadian policy and Crown-Indigenous relations. Drawing on a rich and varied set of oral and textual sources, including interviews with award recipients and Jan Eisenhardt, the creator of the Awards himself, Janice Forsyth critically assesses the state's role in policing Indigenous bodies and identities through sport, from the assimilationist sporting regulations of residential schools to the present-day exclusion of Indigenous activities from mainstream sports. This work recognizes the role of sport as a tool for colonization in Canada, while also acknowledging its potential to become a tool for decolonization and self-determination. "Through considering the Awards in the broader context of ongoing colonial relations in Canada, and bringing to light the voices of the recipients, this study extends well beyond the Tom Longboat Awards history to encompass the complicated place of sport in the Indigenous experience." --Robert Kossuth, Associate Professor of Kinesiology and Physical Education, University of Lethbridge

Book excerpt: A book for directors of their own lives. For readers who don't expect recommendations for a right or wrong. For readers who want to recognise and observe their own opinion and attitude undisturbed. The question of how self-determined you want to live has accompanied you throughout your life. Whether you hear it or you didn't listen. Most of us learned at home to follow an opposite request: "If you do what I want you to do, you're okay, I can like you, or even love you."We don't just get this behavioural challenge from our mothers. It also comes from fathers, partners, teachers, government agencies ... We grow up with it, integrate it into our lives as habits and beliefs. We apply them ourselves to our fellow human beings. In short, we adapt without knowing how we are synchronising. If we are obedient children, subordinate partners, obedient citizens, we are right. We are right because our behaviour seems predictable and controllable. Government agencies generally fear nothing more than mature citizens. Citizens who do not want to be checked for granted, who not only develop their own opinion inappropriately, but even dare to comply with it.Now we are starting to get uncomfortable. We no longer fit into the predictability templates that others have designed for us. If we don't give up on the mismatched, we can even become enemies. And this position of being outcast is too bad for many. Defeated, they pull in their tails, reluctantly subordinate themselves and put themselves under the 'protective coat' of an involuntarily chosen synchronisation. With this decision, however, they all pay a high price: they pay with their liveliness. Joke changes to cynicism, inner rebellion to secret and often blind anger. This impulse book "Self-leadership" connects you again with your oppressed being. This happens completely undramatic by using the impulse tasks to communicate with yourself. You will become more sensitive and noisy. You look more than you look away. Your creative consciousness wakes up and is less and less put to sleep. You live your own life and no longer the one given by others.Sometimes you may feel a little bit scared while reading and going your own way. But most of all, you will experience how much unexpected energy and strength you gain. How much desire for your life.

Download or read book Making Your Own Decision written by Reuben Zamborsky and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-02 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supported decision-making (SDM) allows individuals with disabilities to make choices about their own lives with support from a team of people they choose. Individuals with disabilities choose people they know and trust to be part of a support network to help with decision-making. Supported decision-making is an alternative to guardianship. Instead of having a guardian make a decision for the person with the disability, SDM allows the person with the disability to make his or her own decisions. Supported decision-making promotes self-determination, control, and autonomy. It fosters independence. We all engage in supported decision-making. We consult with family or friends, colleagues or classmates, mechanics or mentors before we make decisions. We may seek support to decide whether to go on a blind date, buy a used car, change jobs, renew a lease, or undergo cataract surgery. We confer and consult with others, and then we decide on our own.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maria Stepanova is one of the most powerful and distinctive voices of Russia’s first post-Soviet literary generation. An award-winning poet and prose writer, she has also founded a major platform for independent journalism. Her verse blends formal mastery with a keen ear for the evolution of spoken language. As Russia’s political climate has turned increasingly repressive, Stepanova has responded with engaged writing that grapples with the persistence of violence in her country’s past and present. Some of her most remarkable recent work as a poet and essayist considers the conflict in Ukraine and the debasement of language that has always accompanied war. The Voice Over brings together two decades of Stepanova’s work, showcasing her range, virtuosity, and creative evolution. Stepanova’s poetic voice constantly sets out in search of new bodies to inhabit, taking established forms and styles and rendering them into something unexpected and strange. Recognizable patterns of ballads, elegies, and war songs are transposed into a new key, infused with foreign strains, and juxtaposed with unlikely neighbors. As an essayist, Stepanova engages deeply with writers who bore witness to devastation and dramatic social change, as seen in searching pieces on W. G. Sebald, Marina Tsvetaeva, and Susan Sontag. Including contributions from ten translators, The Voice Over shows English-speaking readers why Stepanova is one of Russia’s most acclaimed contemporary writers.
