Book excerpt: The self-contained aircraft oxygen system (SCAOS) contains 19 major components which are not commercially available and which required design, development and evaluation as part of the program. These components are the oxygen concentrator stack, ejector, *water reservoir assembly, *reaction air/water separator, *reaction air solenoid valve (latching), *oxygen supply solenoid valve, emergency oxygen regulator, breathing control unit, *compressor, mask and hose assembly, *purge valve, CO2 scrubber, Equilibrator, oxygen/water separator, electronic control unit, air/water heater controller, cockpit controls and instrumentation, *pressure switch and *loop pressure regulator. Eight of the components (indicated by an * above) were subjected to selected environmental testing. Five of the eight components passed all testing with no problems. Three of the components (the water reservoir, oxygen supply solenoid valve and the compressor) required design modifications which resulted in subsequent successful test completion. It consists of a concentrator to extract oxygen from engine bleed air, a scrubber to remove exhaled CO2, and valves, compressor, regulators, accumulator, emergency oxygen supply, sensors, and mechanical and electrical controls. The SCAOS operates on a closed-loop, rebreather cycle with the capability of providing short-term open loop operation. The system is designed to supply oxygen to two men at cabin altitudes from sea level to 43,000 feet. System development included design analyses, studies of aircraft bleed and cooling air interfaces with emphasis on the F-4 aircraft, development of component specifications, system ground testing, flight testing in a T-39 aircraft with human test subjects, and modifications resulting from system test experience. Book excerpt: Recent advances in solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) oxygen concentrator cell technology in the areas of high temperature operating capability, improved anode catalyst, improved current collector materials, more sophisticated cooling techniques and improved freeze/thaw capability indicated potential weight savings for the self-contained aircraft oxygen system in the order of 80% in the concentrator stack and 63% in the oxygen concentrator system. An eleven-month developmental design and test effort was performed which encompassed cell evaluation, fabrication technique development, full size cell test, 4-cell buildup test, full-size 32-cell stack test, systems analysis, and definition of ancillary components required to support the advanced oxygen concentrator stack. The program resulted in a cell design which offers a 65% stack weight savings (46% on a subsystem basis). (Author).

Book excerpt: Adaptation of the self-contained aircraft oxygen system (SCAOS) for Navy use formed a part of the overall development program. The main difference between Navy and Air Force practice as it affects the system is the use of a chest-mounted miniature breathing regulator by the Navy, while the baseline Air Force system employs panel-mounted regulators occupying the envelope of the CRU-68/A regulator. A primary design consideration for Navy use is the capability of the system to operate in a submerged and flooded cockpit to a depth of 33 feet. The chest-mounted regulator allows the aviator to be in any orientation without materially affecting the mask pressure when underwater. The baseline SCAOS design uses an 1800 psi emergency oxygen supply (in addition to the bailout supply) to provide oxygen for 30 minutes at 30,000 feet in the event of a total system failure. This volume describes the design, development and testing of a T-39 configurated SCAOS system as modified for Navy use and the design of an emergency supply for 10 minutes operation underwater to a depth of 33 feet.
