Book excerpt: (Uncorrected OCR) ii ABSTRACT There is a lack of empirical evidence pertaining to primary school pupils in Hong Kong, especially with respect to significant variables, namely self-concept, intelligence, school achievement, teachers' rating and peer's rating. In this study, the writer focused on determining whether significant positive relationships existed between self-concept and these variables with a hundred and twenty-four grade three to grade five children, all from lower socioeconomic class. Subjects were categorized into high self-concepts and low self-concepts by a standard deviation score above and below the mean score of the Piers-Harris Children's Self-concept Scale. To measure the other variables the following instruments were used: for intellectual abilities, the Raven's Progressive Matrices; for academic achievement, the average score of three major subjects in school, namely English, Chinese and Mathematics, for teachers' evaluation, the Teachers' Rating Scale; and for peer's rating, the sociometric test. Significant positive correlation beyond 0.05 level, ranging from 0.27 to 0.47, were found between self-concept with both teachers' rating and peers' rating. High se1f-concepts also had higher scores than low self-concepts in both of these ratings. However, no correlations were discovered between self-concept, intelligence and academic achievement. The results were explained in the light of available research evidence.

Book WISC V Assessment and Interpretation

Download or read book WISC V Assessment and Interpretation written by Lawrence G. Weiss and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2015-06-08 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wechsler Intelligence Scale is the most widely used intelligence test for children worldwide. WISC-V introduces new subtests, composite scores, process scores, error scores, and scaled scores as a more complex and accurate means of assessing cognitive abilities. WISC-V Assessment and Interpretation provides practical information for clinicians on selection of subtest measures, administration, and interpretation. New subtests are described along with tips for accurate administration and scoring. Full Scale IQ is identified as important for predicting relevant behaviors, and primary index scores for characterizing the child’s strengths and weaknesses. Classroom indicators of low scores on each of these abilities are identified, with suggested interventions, accommodations, and instructional strategies for low scorers. Coverage includes ethnic differences for the Full Scale IQ and each primary index score, along with evidence of the profound influence of parental attitudes and expectations. Several other societal and contextual factors relevant to understanding racial/ethnic differences are presented. Two chapters review use of the WISC-V for identifying learning disabilities, testing of individuals with dyslexia, and best-practice recommendations to ensure accurate diagnosis and intervention. Concluding chapters describe advances in the Q-interactive system platform allowing administration of the WISC-V on iPads and other tablets and how clinicians can tailor assessment using select WISC-V subtests and features. Authored by the creators of the WISC-V Describes the new subtests, revised test structure, and test extensions Advises clinicians on test selection and custom tailoring of assessment measures Provides best practice recommendations for accurate administration and scoring Addresses electronic administration via tablets and comparison to print scores Reviews social/contextual factors for understanding racial/ethnic differences Translates scores to predict behaviors and identify child strengths and weaknesses Suggests interventions, accommodations, and instructional strategies for low scorers

Abstract: Abstract With the recent positive psychology movement to study children's mental health, the aim of this research was to address the perceptions of Hong Kong students of their school satisfaction and their quality of life. Its relationship with their intrapersonal factors, such as perceived academic performance, self-esteem, hope and the school contextual factors, that is teacher support, peer support, peer conflict and peer victimization are explored. Self-report questionnaires were used with 760 Primary 3 to Primary 6 Hong Kong School children aged from 7-14 years old. The findings of the research indicated that a caring school climate was favourable for the promotion of children's school satisfaction. In addition, elements such as teacher support and perceived academic performance are crucial to determine children's happiness in the schools. It also demonstrated the importance of integrative models of children's school satisfaction that integrate both intrapersonal and environmental variables. This research has contributed to the missing gap in psychological research, which increasing focus has placed on studying constructive human qualities and strengths. The findings also support the significant role of school as a buffer system against psychological symptoms in the Chinese context. In view of this, there is a need for the school to develop a warm climate to improve teachers and students relationships and adopt a comprehensive guidance preventive programme for building students' sense of school belonging. i DOI: 10.5353/th_b3733830 Subjects: Elementary schools - Social aspects - China - Hong Kong Quality of life School children - China - Hong Kong - Attitudes

Download or read book Noncognitive Skills in the Classroom written by Jeffrey A. Rosen and published by RTI Press. This book was released on 2010-09-27 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of recent research on the relationship between noncognitive attributes (motivation, self efficacy, resilience) and academic outcomes (such as grades or test scores). We focus primarily on how these sets of attributes are measured and how they relate to important academic outcomes. Noncognitive attributes are those academically and occupationally relevant skills and traits that are not “cognitive”—that is, not specifically intellectual or analytical in nature. We examine seven attributes in depth and critique the measurement approaches used by researchers and talk about how they can be improved.
