Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this thesis work is to enhance the charge carrier mobility in organic semiconductors using self-assembly techniques. We discuss and demonstrate two different self-assembly mechanisms for organic semiconducting thin films. The first technique is to exploit the inherent self-alignment of liquid crystalline polymers. The second technique, graphoepitaxy, has been adopted from the processing of inorganic semiconductors. Graphoepitaxy utilizes surface topography to promote the oriented growth of crystals on amorphous substrates. In addition to studying the effects that self-assembly has on the structure of thin-films, we probe the effects of increased order on the electronic properties by the fabrication and characterization of organic thin film transistors. Most notably, we find that the charge carrier mobility is increased by a factor of 4-6 for aligned, liquid crystalline polymeric semiconductors and by a factor of 8-10 for small molecules oriented by graphoepitaxy.

Book excerpt: Molecular self-assembly has recently attracted significant attention for possible application in organic electronic and optoelectronic devices, such as self-assembled monolayer field-effect transistors (SAMFETs) and functional self-assembled integrated circuits. Self-assembly combines the advantages of low temperature solution processability, regio-selective monolayer adsorption and nano-scale control of film thickness. Much progress has been made in improving device performance using self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). However, most SAMFET devices reported to date showed current modulation only with submicrometre channels, with low device yields and poor reproducibility as a result of limited lateral interconnection of the semiconducting layer. In an attempt to address these issues, this thesis presents an investigation of the synthesis and properties of conjugated SAM molecules for use as the charge transporting layer in SAMFETs. Chapter 1 gives a comprehensive introduction to SAM-based surface systems, organic semiconductors and their use in OFETs and SAMFETs. Chapter 2 discusses attempts to design and synthesise p-type conjugated molecules capable of self-assembly on oxide surfaces based on a phenylene-bithiophene semiconducting core. The optical and electrochemical properties, as well as the thermal behaviour of these molecules are studied in detail. This theme is carried over to Chapter 3, which describes the synthesis, chemical and physical characterisation of two families of n-type SAM molecules. These molecules consist of NTCDI cores with hexyl or cyclohexyl chains as end-capping groups. Incorporation of a selection of materials as the active layer in OFETs or SAMFETs to evaluate the charge transport is demonstrated in Chapter 4. Monolayer films based on p-type monochlorosilane-terminated SAM molecules are made using the solution assembly technique and characterised by contact angle and AFM. OFETs made from DH-PTTP by both thermal evaporation and spin coating show high mobilities comparable to the best values reported in the literature. Top-contact SAMFETs show a hole mobility of 1.1 × 10-3 cm2V-1s-1 in air, consistent with those of solution processed DH-PTTP based OFETs. Finally, an overview of the project and some suggestions for future work are presented in Chapter 5.

Book excerpt: This thesis targets molecular or organic spintronics and more particularly the spin polarization tailoring opportunities that arise from the ferromagnetic metal/molecule hybridization at interfaces: the new concept of spinterface. Molecular or organic spintronics is an emerging research field at the frontier between organic chemistry and spintronics. The manuscript is divided into three parts, the first of which introduces the basic concepts of spintronics and advantages that molecules can bring to this field. The state of the art on organic and molecular spintronics is also presented, with a special emphasis on the physics and experimental evidence for spinterfaces. The book’s second and third parts are dedicated to the two main experimental topics investigated in the thesis: Self-Assembled Monolayers (SAMs) and Organic Semiconductors (OSCs). The study of SAMs-based magnetic tunnel nanojunctions reveals the potential to modulate the properties of such devices “at will,” since each part of the molecule can be tuned independently like a “LEGO” building block. The study of Alq3-based spin valves reveals magnetoresistance effects at room temperature and is aimed at understanding the respective roles played by the two interfaces. Through the development of these systems, we demonstrate their potential for spintronics and provide a solid foundation for spin polarization engineering at the molecular level.

It crosses disciplines to examine essential nanoassembly principles of QD interaction with organic molecules, excited state dynamics in nanoobjects, theoretical models, and methodologies. Based on ensemble and single-nanoobject detection, the book quantitatively shows (for the first time on a series of nanoassemblies) that surface-mediated processes (formation of trap states) dictate the probability of several of the most interesting and potentially useful photophysical phenomena (FRET- or non-FRET-induced quenching of QD photoluminescence) observed for colloidal QDs and QD–dye nanoassemblies. Further, nanostructures can be generated by nanolithography and thereafter selectively decorated with dye molecules. A similar approach applies to natural nanosized surface heterogeneities.

Book excerpt: Low dimensional organic semiconductors such as quantum boxes, quantum wires, or superlattices are predicted to exhibit enhanced or novel electronic and optical properties for applications in solid state electronic and optoelectronic devices in ways similar to low dimensional inorganic semiconductors. However, the relatively small charge carrier and excition Bohr radii of organic semiconductors (ca. 1.0-1.5 nm) has heretofore made it difficult to prepare organic semiconductor heterostructures with quantum confinement effects. Ultrasmall semiconducting polymer quantum boxes and wires with confinement volumes of 1-2 nm3 have been prepared in our laboratory by self-organization of blends of ABA block conjugated copolymers with a parent homopolymer. Observation of new optical transitions, enhanced luminescence, and stability of luminescence at high electric fields confirmed the confinement of excitons in the organic quantum boxes and wires.

Book excerpt: This work deals with two of the major challenges in organic electronics: (i) the optimization of organic/inorganic contacts through interface engineering and (ii) the prevention of intermixing in multilayer solution-processed devices. (i) A suitable method to control organic/inorganic interfaces, not only in terms of interface energetics but also to control the morphology of subsequent layers is the use of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). Various SAMs from commercially available precursor molecules have been investigated in detail with the aim to optimize the processing parameters for high-throughput fabrication. On the basis of the gained knowledge and experience SAMs composed of novel molecules with strong dipole moments were investigated. (ii) The second part of this work addresses the problem of intermixing of solution-processed thin films. To this end, the film formation was studied of n-type semiconductor materials based on 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxdiimide (NDI) with additional thermally cleavable side groups that govern the solubility of the molecules. Both polymer and small molecule organic semiconductors were studied.
