This accessible and practical book provides therapists and students with a clear understanding of these key issues, as well as of suitable assessment techniques. It then goes on to delineate research-informed treatment approaches for NSSI, with an emphasis on functional assessment, emotion regulation, and problem solving, including motivational interviewing, interpersonal skills, CBT, DBT, behavioral management strategies, delay behaviors, exercise, family therapy, risk management, and medication, as well as how to successfully combine methods.

Book Emotional Abuse

  • Author : Zak Mucha
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2016-12-16
  • ISBN : 9781540835185
  • Pages : 196 pages

Download or read book Emotional Abuse written by Zak Mucha and published by . This book was released on 2016-12-16 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the introduction by Joel Dvoskin, Ph.D.: "But what happens when no one has the courage to intervene, to prevent the pain of another? While Zak Mucha's explanation of the harms of emotional abuse is useful, it pales in comparison to his wisdom in teaching us emotional self-defense. Learning to protect ourselves from emotional abuse changes everything. The victim no longer has to hope for the kindness of strangers, or that the abuser will simply get tired of their verbal assaults. "Thanks to this wonderful book, each of us can learn to be our own hero, by learning some simple yet powerful ways to respond to emotional abuse. "You are about to go on a journey that is at once deeply personal and scientifically valid. This book has been waiting a long time to be written." * Like any self-defense, we have to first identify "what hurts." We have to recognize our own pain. We have been socialized to believe emotional abuse is not serious. We have been taught emotional abuse itself is nothing more than "hurt feelings" and there is no "real" evidence other than the victim's complaints. And if the only evidence is the victim's complaints, we wrongly justify, there is no way to verify whether a person was "actually hurt." The victim of emotional abuse is dismissed precisely because he or she cannot "prove" their feelings. Emotional abuse creates a vicious dynamic where the victim is taught his or her feelings do not count and any pain suffered is, somehow, their own fault. Like any other abuse, emotional abuse is about power. Whoever can define reality has the ultimate power. In emotional abuse, the aggressor attempts to define reality with statements like, "You're too sensitive," and "I couldn't help it. You made me mad." Each statement is an attempt to shape how another person perceives reality. Our self-defense depends on our willingness to identify the boundaries that define who we are and the criteria we desire for relationship. In doing this, we can defend ourselves and define our selves.

Book Psyche on the Skin

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sarah Chaney
  • Publisher : Reaktion Books
  • Release : 2019-08-15
  • ISBN : 9781789141481
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Psyche on the Skin written by Sarah Chaney and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s a troubling phenomenon that many of us think of as a modern psychological epidemic, a symptom of extreme emotional turmoil in young people, especially young women: cutting and self-harm. But few of us know that it was 150 years ago—with the introduction of institutional asylum psychiatry—that self-mutilation was first described as a category of behavior, which psychiatrists, and later psychologists and social workers, attempted to understand. With care and focus, Psyche on the Skin tells the secret but necessary history of self-harm from the 1860s to the present, showing just how deeply entrenched this practice is in human culture. Sarah Chaney looks at many different kinds of self-injurious acts, including sexual self-mutilation and hysterical malingering in the late Victorian period, self-marking religious sects, and self-mutilation and self-destruction in art, music, and popular culture. As she shows, while self-harm is a widespread phenomenon found in many different contexts, it doesn’t necessarily have any kind of universal meaning—it always has to be understood within the historical and cultural context that surrounds it. Bravely sharing her own personal experiences with self-harm and placing them within its wider history, Chaney offers a sensitive but engaging account—supported with powerful images—that challenges the misconceptions and controversies that surround this often misunderstood phenomenon. The result is crucial reading for therapists and other professionals in the field, as well as those affected by this emotive, challenging act.

Book Deliberate Self Harm in Substance Abuse Population

Download or read book Deliberate Self Harm in Substance Abuse Population written by Dr Samia Abul and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-06-18 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do some substance abuse populations need to inflict pain on themselves? The reasons behind the need to self-harm are extremely complex and largely misunderstood. For each person the causative surroundings are different. However, usually they include difficult personal circumstances, past trauma (including childhood sexual and emotional abuse), or economic or social deprivation together with some level of mental disorder (including depression/impulsiveness, suicide and eating disorder). A persons self-harming behaviour may often be associated with the misuse of drugs or alcohol. The fact is that deliberate self-harm is a way of expressing and dealing with profound agony. It is a sign of the emotional pain. It is a coping strategy; if you dont have a language to say what is going on inside you, you dont know how to endure what you are feeling. It is a signal that something is wrong rather than a primary disorder.

Book Autism An Inside Out Approach

Download or read book Autism An Inside Out Approach written by Donna Williams and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 1996-05-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donna Williams' challenging book, written by an autistic person for people with autism and related disorders, carers, and the professionals who work with them, is a practical handbook to understanding, living with and working with autism. Exploring autism from the inside, it shows clearly how the behaviours associated with autism can have a range of different causes, and in many cases reflect the autistic person's attempt to gain control over their internal world. The sensory and perceptual problems that challenge a person with autism are described in depth, together with strategies for tackling them so as to enable that person to take more control of their lives. Donna Williams comments on the various approaches to autism, drawing out those strategies that are of real use, and explaining why some approaches may prove counterproductive, leaving the autistic person feeling even more isolated and misunderstood. Taking the view that understanding autism is the key to managing the condition, Donna Williams' book will bring illumination to all those who have felt baffled and frustrated by the outside appearance of autism. It contains a wealth of helpful suggestions, insights and new ideas, exploding old myths and promoting a view that all those involved with autism will find empowering and creative.
