Book excerpt: Nonagglomerated cobalt, iron, iron-cobalt, and cobalt-nickel alloy nanoparticles, some of which exhibit significant room-temperature magnetic coercivity, have been produced by thermal decomposition of organometallic complexes in a bulk film of P(S-b-2VP). The particles are patterned on the nanoscale: they reside within the P2VP domains of the block copolymer morphology. These results are made possible by the selective sequestration of organometallic complexes into these domains in amounts sufficient to nucleate and grow substantial quantities of nanoparticles, some of which are larger than the size required for ferromagnetic behavior. Nonagglomerated metallic nanoparticles have also been produced inside polyelectrolyte films by the growth of palladium nucleating sites followed by the use of an electroless plating bath. Control of particle size and spatial distribution has been demonstrated. The effect of electroless bath chemistry on particle composition has been examined.

Book excerpt: This computational and theoretical study investigates the self-assembly of superparamagnetic nanoparticles and block copolymers under external magnetic fields. A variety of morphological transitions are observed based on the field orientation, nanoparticle loading, and selectivity of the nanoparticles for the blocks. For symmetric block copolymers, chaining of superparamagnetic nanoparticles under in-plane magnetic fields is shown to achieve long range orientational order of the block copolymer nanodomains and is found to be dependent on nanoparticle size, volume fraction and magnetization strength. A critical selectivity of the particles for one nanodomain is observed, above which strong alignment results and below which comparatively disordered structures are formed. Higher magnetization strengths are found to reduce equilibrium defect densities in the nematic-isotropic ordering of lamellar thin films, as corroborated by scaling arguments. For asymmetric coil fractions forming hexagonal block copolymer nanostructure, the inplane field induced chaining of the nanoparticles selective for the minority block, leads to the formation of stripe phases oriented parallel to the magnetic field. Furthermore, in-plane field induced chaining of nanoparticles selective for the majority block leads to alignment of hexagonal morphology with 100 direction oriented parallel to the external magnetic field. Out of plane magnetic fields induce repulsive dipolar interactions between the nanoparticles that annihilate the defects in the hexagonal morphology of the block copolymer when the nanoparticle is selective for the minority block. Honeycomb lattices are obtained using nanoparticles selective for majority block under out of plane magnetic fields for certain specific nanoparticle loadings. Commensurability of nanoparticle size and loadings with the block copolymer structure is critical in optimizing the ordering of the final composite. Kinetics of alignment in block copolymer nanocomposites is studied using External Potential Dynamics (EPD) method, wherein an equivalent evolution equation for potential fields is solved instead of conservation equation for the monomer segments. The dynamics study reveals an interesting interplay of nanoparticle mobility, dipolar interaction strength and nanoparticle-polymer interaction strength on the rate of alignment of domains.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this PhD thesis, the preparation of several types of hybrid materials of block copolymer and magnetic nanoparticles is described. The diversified morphologies of nanoaggregates formed by dispersing poly(glyceryl methacrylate)-block-poly(2-cinnamoyloxyethyl methacrylate)-block-poly(tert-butyl acrylate) tri-block copolymers in block selective solvents will be reported first. The volume occupied by the core block in these nanoaggregates can be swollen by solvent, and the core block can be sculpted. The cores can act potentially as the template to grow magnetic nanoparticles. Thus, a potential method for preparing hybrid magnetic materials of block copolymers and magnetic nanoparticles with different morphologies is developed. A one-pot method to synthesize cobalt nanoparticles covered by a polymer shell is then reported. This is achieved by thermally decomposing dicobalt octacarbonyl in the presence of polymeric multi-dentate ligand poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(acrylic acid). Using a similar method, cobalt nanoparticles covered by poly(2-cinnamoyloxyethyl methacryate)-block-poly(acrylic acid) ligand are synthesized. The cobalt nanoparticles fuse into chains for their magnetic dipole-dipole interaction. The chains are then coated with poly(tert-butyl acrylate)-block-poly(2-cinnamoyloxyethyl methacrylate). The coated Co chains are further locked by photo-crosslinking the poly(2-cinnamoyloxyethyl methacrylate) segments. The as-prepared cobalt nano wires have interesting magnetic response and may be used to build complicated magnetic nano devices. Another hybrid magnetic material is prepared via an oil-in-water emulsion method. The oil phase of the emulsion sphere consists of r-Fe2O3 magnetic nanoparticles covered with the poly(2-cinnamoyloxyethyl methacryate)-block-poly(acrylic acid) ligand and a poly(2-cinnamoyloxyethyl methacryate) homopolymer. It was dispersed in water using a mixture of poly(2-cinnamoyloxyethyl methacrylate)-block-poly(succinoylglyceryl methacrylate) and poly(2-cinnamoyloxyethyl methacrylate)-block-poly(glyceryl methacrylate) as the surfactants. The evaporation of the organic solvent left behind solid particles in water. The polymer chains on the surface of the obtained spheres allow the immobilization of biomolecules. Factors affecting the emulsion process are studied systematically. The emulsion spheres are characterized using TEM, AFM, TGA and etc. The emulsion sphere have potential application is immunoassay. The protein binding capacity of the spheres is determined.

Book excerpt: The aim of this research was twofold: understanding the methods of patterning magnetic films using self-assembled block copolymer masks and examining the magnetic reversal mechanisms of as deposited and patterned magnetic films. Ti / Co 66 at. % Cr 22 at. % Pt 12 at. % (CoCrPt) films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy were deposited on silicon wafers by UHV sputtering. Ti was used as an adhesion layer and texture promoter so that the easy magnetic axis of Co is aligned perpendicular to the sample plane. Magnetic reversal of Ti/CoCrPt films and Ti/CoCrPt/Ti/CoCrPt pseudo spin valve films is a domain nucleation and growth process with a slow time-dependent magnetization reversal which was attributed to growth of reverse domains. The films were patterned into nanosized islands by block copolymer lithography using self assembled polystyrene-polyferrocenyldimethylsilane (PS-PFS) as a mask. The islands reverse their magnetization in a coherent and independent fashion (StonerWohlfarth reversal), in contrast to the continuous film. Micromagnetic simulation confirmed the coherent reversal of the thicker islands. Two graphoepitaxy methods were examined for inducing long range order (LRO) in block copolymers. Nanoimprint lithography with in-situ annealing was successful in guiding the self assembly of the block copolymers in the grooves, however, no LRO was achieved. Selectively removable polymeric templates fabricated out of BARL-i@ anti reflection coating guide the self-assembly of PFS domains with good LRO and very few defects over a large area. The ordered arrays were then transferred into silica and W, forming an ordered array of cp-packed W islands with period of 29 nm and island diameter of 17 nm. Transfer of the pattern into CoCrPt is difficult due to the nonselective ion beam etching process.

But the biogenic syntheses of monodispersed nanoparticles with specific sizes and shapes have been a challenge in biomaterial science. Nanoparticles are of great interest due to their extremely small size and large surface-to-volume ratio, which lead to both chemical and physical differences in their properties (e.g., mechanical properties, biological and sterical properties, catalytic activity, thermal and electrical conductivity, optical absorption and melting point) compared to bulk of the same chemical composition. Recently, however, synthesizing metal nanoparticles using green technology via microorganisms, plants, viruses, and so on, has been extensively studied and has become recognized as a green and efficient way for further exploiting biological systems as convenient nanofactories. Thus the biological synthesis of nanoparticles is increasingly regarded as a rapid, ecofriendly, and easily scaled-up technology. Today researchers are developing new techniques and materials using nanotechnology that may be suitable for plants to boost their native functions. Recently, biological nanoparticles were found to be more pharmacologically active than physico-chemically synthesized nanoparticles. Various applications of biosynthesized nanoparticles have been discovered, especially in the field of biomedical research, such as applications to specific delivery of drugs, use for tumor detection, angiogenesis, genetic disease and genetic disorder diagnosis, photoimaging, and photothermal therapy. Further, iron oxide nanoparticles have been applied to cancer therapy, hyperthermia, drug delivery, tissue repair, cell labeling, targeting and immunoassays, detoxification of biological fluids, magnetic resonance imaging, and magnetically responsive drug delivery therapy. Nanoparticle synthesis for plant byproducts for biomedical applications has vast potential. (One can even find allusions to these attempts in the Bible; e. g. , Genesis 30. ) The term "mimetic" means to imitate or mimic. The word "mimic" means to copy closely, or to imitate accurately. Biomimetic, which has not yet entered most dictionaries, means to imitate or mimic some specific bio logical function. Usually, the objective of biomimetics is to form some useful material without the need of utilizing living systems. In a simi lar manner, the term biomimetic polymers means creating synthetic poly mers which imitate the activity of natural bioactive polymers. This is a major advance in polymer chemistry because the natural bioactive polymers are the basis of life itself. Thus, biomimetic polymers imitate the life process in many ways. This present volume delineates some of the recent progress being made in this vast field of biomimetic polymers. Chemists have been making biomimetic polymers for more than fifty years, although this term wasn't used in the early investigations.
