Book Selective Gas Chromatographic Detection of Vapor Phase Organics in Ambient Air

Download or read book Selective Gas Chromatographic Detection of Vapor Phase Organics in Ambient Air written by JW. Bozzelli and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-resolution capillary-column gas chromatography (GC) efficiently separates the many organic compounds that exist in ambient air. However, the identification of these compounds by retention times alone is difficult. The response ratios of sample components on several different types of GC detectors can be used to identify selected peaks more positively. Electron capture (ECD), photoionization (PID), and flame ionization (FID) detectors have been evaluated in this study. Samples split between an ECD and FID are readily analyzed for such electron-capturing species as carbon tetrachloride and tetrachloroethylene. Replicate samples are run on a PID for identification of peaks due to aromatic compounds and other unsaturated materials. This system of three detectors gives sufficient information to confirm the identity of the compounds that have been chosen for quantitation.

Book Gas Chromatography in Air Pollution Analysis

Download or read book Gas Chromatography in Air Pollution Analysis written by V.G. Berezkin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1991-04-25 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air pollution determination is one of the most important fields of gas chromatography application in practice. This book provides a systematic description of the main stages of air pollution determination, ranging from sampling problems to the quantitative estimation of the acquired data. Special attention is paid to the problem of gas, vapor, spray and solid particles extraction from air. The main methods of sampling procedure, namely, container utilization, cryogenic concentration, absorption, adsorption, chemisorption and filter usage, and successive impurities extraction are also handled. Sorption theory and the problems of sorption and desorption efficiency for hazardous impurities being extracted from traps with sorbents are discussed in detail. The practical utilization of different sorbents (silica, activated carbon, polymers etc.) to carry out sampling procedures for 200 main pollutants with known TLV (USSR and USA) is also considered. This highly informative book, reflecting several insufficiently known techniques as well as the experience of both western and Soviet researchers, should be of interest to both beginners and skilled researchers.

Book The Automated Determination of Volatile Organic Contaminants in Ambient Air And or Soil Gas by Gas Chromatography with Selective Detectors

Download or read book The Automated Determination of Volatile Organic Contaminants in Ambient Air And or Soil Gas by Gas Chromatography with Selective Detectors written by E. Almasi and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volatile Organic Contaminants (VOCs) are major air pollutants in our environment. Whole air sampling has become the primary method for sampling air with EPA method TO-14. With this technique, an air sample is drawn through a cryogenically cooled trap to freeze out and concentrate VOC contaminants. The trap is then quickly heated and the VOCs are transferred to a cryogenically cooled column. Several variations and improvements have been studied: 1) automation for multiple samples, 2) use of a variable temperature absorption trap to eliminate cryogenics and a water removal device, and 3) elimination of the requirement for a cryogenically cooled oven. Two automated analytical systems are discussed: a fixed and a variable volume system. Precision, method detection limits, system linearity, and carryover are reported. Finally, ambient, dry-cleaner, and indoor air samples are analyzed using the techniques described.

Book A Method for Concentrating and Determining Trace Organic Compounds in the Atmosphere

Download or read book A Method for Concentrating and Determining Trace Organic Compounds in the Atmosphere written by and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Determination of subpart-per-billion (sub-ppb) levels of volatile organic compounds in the atmosphere by flame ionization gas chromatography requires sample sizes of at least several hundred milliters of air. Cryogenic methods of concentrating trace compounds before analysis have the disadvantage of also concentrating large amounts of water, a serious problem in gas-liquid chromatography. A simple method was developed for sample collection and concentration using porous polymer adsorbants with the unique properties of high capacity for retention of organic compounds and minimal capacity for retention of water. This technique was used to determine sub-ppb levels of volatile organic compounds in a typical rural atmosphere. Probable sources of these organic compounds were vehicle exhaust, biological processes, natural gas leaks, and industrial chemicals.
