Book Korea s Premier Collection of Classical Literature

Download or read book Korea s Premier Collection of Classical Literature written by and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2019-03-31 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book in English to offer an extensive introduction to the Tongmunsŏn (Selections of Refined Literature of Korea)—the largest and most important Korean literary collection created prior to the twentieth century—as well as translations of essays from key chapters. The Tongmunsŏn was compiled in 1478 by Sŏ Kŏjŏng (1420–1488) and other Chosŏn literati at the command of King Sŏngjong (r. 1469–1494). It was modeled after the celebrated Chinese anthology Wen Xuan and contains poetry and prose in an extensive array of styles and genres. The Translators’ Introduction begins by describing the general structure of the Tongmunsŏn and contextualizes literary output in Korea within the great sweep of East Asian literature from the eighth to the fifteenth centuries. The entire Tongmunsŏn as well as all of the essays selected for translation were written in hanmun (as opposed to Korean vernacular), which points to a close literary connection between the continent and the peninsula. The Introduction goes on to discuss the genres contained in the Tongmunsŏn and examines style as revealed through prosody. The translation of two of these genres (treatises and discourses) in four books of the Tongmunsŏn showcases prose-writing and the intellectual concerns of the age. Through their discussions of morality, nature, and the fantastic, we see Daoist, Buddhist, and Confucian themes at work in essays by some of Korea’s most distinguished writers, among them Yi Kyubo, Yi Saek, Yi Chehyŏn, and Chŏng Tojŏn. The translations also include annotations and extensive cross-references to classical allusions in the Chinese canon, making the present volume an essential addition to any East Asian literature collection.

Book excerpt: "Hilarity transfiguring all that dread, manic overflow of powerful feeling, zero at the bone—Flies renders its desolation with singular invention and focus and figuration: the making of these poems makes them exhilarating."—James Laughlin Award citation "Reading Michael [Dickman] is like stepping out of an overheated apartment building to be met, unexpectedly, by an exhilaratingly chill gust of wind."—The New Yorker "These are lithe, seemingly effortless poems, poems whose strange affective power remains even after several readings."—The Believer Winner of the James Laughlin Award for the best second book by an American poet, Flies presents an uncompromising vision of joy and devastating loss through a strict economy of language and an exuberant surrealism. Michael Dickman's poems bring us back to the wonder and violence of childhood, and the desire to connect with a power greater than ourselves. What you want to remember of the earth and what you end up remembering are often two different things Michael Dickman was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. His first book of poems, The End of the West, appeared in 2009 and became the best-selling debut in the history of Copper Canyon Press. His poems appear frequently in The New Yorker, and he teaches poetry at Princeton University.

Book Selections From English Literature 1700 1900 Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Selections From English Literature 1700 1900 Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by H. N. Asman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From English Literature, (1700-1900), Vol. 2 This selection of passages has been made to form a companion volume to the English Literature of Mr. F. J. Rahtz. It covers the period from Defoe to Morris, but many authors are unrepresented owing to the exigencies of space. Complete poems have been given where possible. I have attempted to follow two principles in making the selections, choosing what was (a) excellent in itself, (b) really illustrative of the authors work, or of various phases of it. The length of the extracts is not always, nor of necessity, proportionate to the importance of the writer. These selections are not intended to form a substitute for a full study of the authors, but to persuade the reader to explore for himself those "many goodly states and kingdoms," which, he must perceive, are in reality "realms of gold," when they can furnish such priceless treasure as even this little book contains. I am greatly indebted to Messrs. Longmans for kind permission to include the song from the Life and Death of Jason, by William Morris, and the extract from Newman's Apologia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in English Literature: Being Typical Selections of British and American Authorship, From Shakespeare to the Present Time In the prescribed curricula of most high-schools, English literature and rhetoric find an important place. Yet, perhaps, no subjects are less satisfactorily taught. The study of English literature is, for the most part, confined to a cram on the personal biography of authors; at the best, it is a reading about literature rather than a reading in literature.* The study of rhetoric is, for the most part, confined to the learning of abstract definitions and principles. This is an acquisition certainly not to be undervalued; for there is only a half-truth in Butler's famous aphorism, that "All a rhetorician's rules teach nothing but to name his tools." Yet assuredly it is a barren knowledge, that of the "rhetoricians rules," unless these are seen and felt as they find spontaneous embodiment in the great creations of the masters of literary art. This volume of masterpieces is designed to occupy a place at the meeting-point of literature and rhetoric - to restore the twain to their natural and fruitful relationship. Book The Grounds of English Literature

Download or read book The Grounds of English Literature written by Christopher Cannon and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2004-12-09 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The centuries just after the Norman Conquest are the forgotten period of English literary history. In fact, the years 1066-1300 witnessed an unparalleled ingenuity in the creation of written forms, for this was a time when almost every writer was unaware of the existence of other English writing. In a series of detailed readings of the more important early Middle English works, Cannon shows how the many and varied texts of the period laid the foundations for the project of English literature. This richness is for the first time given credit in these readings by means of an innovative theory of literary form that accepts every written shape as itself a unique contribution to the history of ideas. This theory also suggests that the impoverished understanding of literature we now commonly employ is itself a legacy of this early period, an attribute of the single form we have learned to call 'romance'. A number of reading methods have lately taught us to be more generous in our understandings of what literature might be, but this book shows us that the very variety we now strive to embrace anew actually formed the grounds of English literature-a richness we only lost when we forgot how to recognize it.

When we grew older, what happy hours did we not spend with our books. How the printed words made us forget the world in which we live, and carried us away to a wonderland,

Download or read book Inspirations written by Paulo Coelho and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2010-03-04 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Anthology' comes from the Greek word that stands for garlands - a bouquet of flowers. An anthology then, should be a sort of reminder of something else, a small token of something much larger. In the case of flowers, they bring with their fragrance and colorfulness the reminder of the fields, of a season. Coelho's anthology, therefore, is not only a collection of texts or poems, but a gift, something arranged according to his sensitivities, to give to others. The selection of books presented in this volume have been chosen as if from a vast field of flowers, stretching infinitely into time's horizon. Coelho's selection is ordered in to the four elements, symbolizing both our world on all its directions, and the way we dwell in this world, the way we say it. In 'Earth' we find writers as diverse as Oscar Wilde and D H Lawrence; in 'Air' Nelson Mandela and Gabriel Garcia Marques; in 'Fire' Rumi and Mary Shelley; in 'Water' Hans Christian Anderson and Machiavelli.
