Book Selections From Tibullus and Propertius Classic Reprint

Download or read book Selections From Tibullus and Propertius Classic Reprint written by George Gilbert Ramsay and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From Tibullus and Propertius The following selection from Tibullus and Propertius has been prepared specially to meet the wants of the students of this University; but no apology need be offered for any attempt, however imperfect, to rescue from comparative neglect the best portions of two of the most fascinating and suggestive of Latin poets, and to supply such help for their interpretation as may bring them within the range of ordinary classical instruction, whether at Schools or Universities. It is scarcely creditable that in a country which avowedly places its higher instruction upon a classical basis, the works of two of the most characteristic poets of the best age of Latin poetry should be practically unknown to our schools, and ignored in University examinations. We may grant the transcendent merits, for educational purposes, of Virgil and of Horace; but it is impossible not to regret that the choice of Latin poets should run in so narrow a round, and that no place should be found for the graceful, refined Tibullus, or for that rare poetic genius whom Professor Postgate has justly styled 'the greatest elegiac poet of Rome.' This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ovid, And, Catullus, Tibullus, and Propertius The literary society of which the young poet now found himself a recognised member, was perhaps the most brilliant which has ever been collected in one place. The Athens of Pericles in one point surpassed it in the magnitude of individual genius. But in ex tent, in variety of literary power, the Rome of Augustus stands pre-eminent in the history of letters. That pre-eminence, indeed has been recorded in the name which it has bequeathed to following times. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Ancient Classics for English Readers

Download or read book Ancient Classics for English Readers written by W. Lucas Collins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Classics for English Readers: Catullus, Tibullus, and Propertius Poems' (smith Elder: in which the trans lations of Propertius are sadly too few. In the course of the work the writer has found that it is perfectly vain to expect the reader to take kindly to the versions of Professor Robinson Ellis but he may tolerate the few that are given for their exact literality and evident scholarship. Mr Paley's versions, where they have been used, will be found to combine poetic feeling with these merits. It has seemed well to designate all the versions of the three poets for which the author of the volume is him-1 self responsible with the letter D.; and he desires to plead for these not so much a claim of superiority to other versions, as a scruple to avail himself of the honey of other bees, without samples and contribu tions from his own hive. There is room for even more workers in this special field of translation; and the volume will have done good if it inspires a friendly rivalry in rendering three specially delightful poets into congenial English. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From the Latin Poets: Catullus, Lucretius, Tibullus, Propertius, Ovid, and Lucan HE design of this series of selections from the Ciceronian poets Catullus and Lucretius, the elegiac writers of the Augustan age, and the epic poet Lucan, is to bring together in convenient form such portions of their writings as may be most profitable for study in a college course. These selections are not only free from all impurity of senti ment, but they are among the choicest and best productions of their respective authors, and may thus be of service also as an introduction to a critical study of the complete works of these poets, and in the study of the history of Roman literature. Book excerpt: This original look at the Roman love elegies of Propertius, Tibullus, and Ovid engages postmodern and new materialist feminist theory to assert the significance in the poems of human bodies in all their vulnerability, sexiness, and materiality. This analysis underscores the impact marginalized characters such as mistresses and enslaved individuals have on the genre.
