She is a woman to love, to love As flowers love light; All that is best in you is at its best, All the heart opens to her as a guest Who makes it bright. She is a woman to love, to love With soul and heart; And all in her that is sweet and true She makes as if it were drawn from you By gracious art You cannot help but love, but love; Nobody can; She carries a charm with her everywhere Just a circle she makes in the air, Bewitching man. This book was released on 2021-09-24 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Walter Smith started writing and performing music during the early 1980s-ended up giving his life to the cause. Singing and playing guitar, be it Rock, Blues, Folk, on to Jazz back to country, the musician loved it all. By the 90s the songwriter moved from Chicago to Nashville to pitch songs only to end up in Venice, CA. by 2000 living in a van down by the ocean and playing music in the streets...lived like that for over 15 years. Along the way he had written two novels, a play and a screenplay. In 2005 Mr. Smith began writing about his life, where he was and then how the years brought him there. A Proustian pursuit ensued giving birth to six volumes of memoirs to speak for 54 years lived. By 2019 David returned to writing novels with two more books. Poetry was always there, mostly in song form, but the prolific writer kept tinkering with the medium, music aside. Amidst the years of memoirs, David wrote poems to express what the books might have missed, some abstract, others more direct.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Heretic: And Other Poems Yes, he was there at the grave, and we Eyed each other with meaning look, Wondering What he had come to see; Yet we pitied him, too, ere long, as he Stood by himself alone, and shook While the earth fell dull on the coffin lid. But why had he come where he was not bid? He might have known he would mar our meeting, Who neither its love nor its grief could share. And how could we give him a word of greeting? "Service begins at eleven, but the door will be open at ten: " That means a crush to get in, with screaming of women, and men Barely just kept from swearing by dread of the Sabbath day, And swearing the more in their hearts, it were better for women to stay At home, and see to their children, instead of losing their wits Crushed in a trampling crowd, till they go off in fainting fits. No, I'll not face it. How should I sit still in a narrow pew For an hour, with my legs a-cramp, and with nothing on earth to do But stare at the white-washed walls, and gasp for a mouthful of air, And smell the hot peppermint breaths, and the oil in the young buck's hair, And watch how faces grow purple, and bald heads are smoking like, censers? Nay, I will sit by the fire here, and read that last volume of Spencer's. There's more in a sentence of his than in all that this fellow can say, Though he preach for an hour by the clock." So he kicked his boots out of the way. That was his first thought. But hardly had he reached out for his book, And settled him down in an easy chair in the cosiest nook, With a big cigar in his mouth, and the cloud-smoke round his head Curling in wavy rings, when once more he looked up and said;-- "Yet we were fellows at College together, and friends too once, This famous preacher and I, and he was not a bit of a dunce, But fairly well up in his classics, though Logic was always his forte; A rare, good hand at debate, ever prompt with a clever retort; Not very strong in science, but skilled with his pen to write, And making his half-dark thinking clearer than other men's light; [his head, A smart rhetorician truly, with a ready tongue in Though he looked so clumsy and loutish and homespun and country-bred. Book excerpt: "Smith's sage advice will aid Christians in recognizing the simple joys of practicing their faith."--Publishers Weekly Western culture is in a tailspin, and Christian faith is entangled in it: we do kingdom things in empire ways. Western approaches to faith leave us feeling depressed, doubting, anxious, and burned out. We know something is wrong with the way we do faith and church in the West, but we're so steeped in it that we don't know where to begin to break old habits. Popular pastor and speaker Mandy Smith invites us to be unfettered from the deeply ingrained habits of Western culture so we can do kingdom things in kingdom ways again. She explores how we can be transformed by new postures and habits that help us see God already at work in and around us. The way forward isn't more ideas, programs, and problem-solving but in Jesus's surprising invitation to the kingdom through childlikeness. Ultimately, rediscovering childlike habits is a way for us to remember how to be human. Unfettered helps us reimagine how to follow God with our whole selves again and join with God's mission in the world. Foreword by Walter Brueggemann.

Book How the Body of Christ Talks

Download or read book How the Body of Christ Talks written by C. Christopher Smith and published by Brazos Press. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's highly charged social and political environment, we often don't know how to talk well with others--especially with people whose backgrounds differ from our own. C. Christopher Smith, coauthor of the critically acclaimed and influential Slow Church, addresses why conversation has become such a challenge in the 21st century and argues that it is perhaps the most-needed spiritual practice of our individualistic age. Smith likens practicing conversation to the working of the human body. Bodies are wondrous symphonies of diverse, intricate parts striving for our health, and our health suffers when these parts fail to converse effectively. Likewise, we must learn to converse effectively with those who differ from us in the body of Christ so we can embody Christ together in the world. In community, we learn what it means to belong to others and to a story that is bigger than ourselves. Smith shows how church communities can be training hubs where we learn to talk with and listen to one another with kindness and compassion. The book explores how churches can initiate and sustain conversation, offers advice for working through seasons of conflict, suggests spiritual practices and dispositions that can foster conversation, and features stories from several congregations that are learning to practice conversation.
