Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From the Poems of Lord Byron Byron was violently blamed in England, not only for his treat ment of his wife, but for general dissolute conduct and for the audacity of his sentiments. Such was the revulsion Of public feeling, so vehement was the outcry against him, that, as he after wards wrote, he felt that if what was said were true he was unfit for England if false, England was unfit for him. Under the cir cums auces his pride dictated but one course: on the 25th of April. 1816, he quitted England, never to return. Only four years of his mature life had been passed in his native land. He was but twenty-eight years old when he set out on his second and final visit to southern Europe. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Selections from the Poetry of Lord Byron Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From the Poetry of Lord Byron There are two aspects of Byron, almost equally attractive to the modern reader, although attractive in different ways. There is the personal Byron, vehemently masculine in most of his habits and doings, yet, as Moore and others who knew him report, strangely. feminine in some of his traits, and perhaps again, as Goethe felt, as strangely immature and like a child as soon as he turned to reflection: the whole compound a brilliant meteoric genius that dazzled the eyes of Europe for a short generation. To us this Byron becomes a fascinating psychological study, a document in humanity, baffling our analysis, as he himself baffled his own analysis. For this study it is plain that we need all the evidence obtainable, letters, journals, the testimony alike of friends, of enemies, and of indifferent contemporaries, as well as all the verses, the bad with the good, which flowed so readily from his incontinent pen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Selection From the Works of Lord Byron Byron with foolish faces of praise. It is of little moment to him or to us that they have long since ceased to cackle and begun to hiss. They have become used to better verse and carefuller workmen and must be forgiven if after such training they cannot at once appreciate the splendid and im perishable excellence which covers all his offences and outweighs all his defects: the excellence of sincerity and strength. Without these no poet can live; but few have ever had so much of them as Byron. His sincerity indeed is difficult to discover and define; but it does in effect lie at the root of all his good works: deformed by pretension and defaced by as sumption, masked by folly and veiled by affectation but perceptible after all, and priceless. It has been cut down in its strength, and the past is all that remains to us of Byron. That voice is silent for ever, which, bursting so frequently on our car, was often heard with rapturous admiration, sometimes with regret. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Lord Byron, (Complete), Vol. 3 of 4 Tn: following drama is taken entirely flow the German's Tale, Kmitzmr, published many years ago in Lee's Canterbury Tales; written (i believe) by two sisters, of whom one furnished only this story and another, both of which are considered superior to the remainder of the collection. I have adopted the characters, plan, and even the language, of many parts of this story. Some of the characters are modified or altered, a few of the names changed, and one character (ida of Stralenheim) added by my self: but in the rest the original is chiefly followed. When I was young (about fourteen, I think.) I first read this tale, which made a. Deep impression upon me; and may, indeed, be said to contain the germ of much that I have since written. I am not sure that it ever was vei'y popular; or, at any rate, its popularity has since been eclipsed by that of other great writers in the same depart ment. But I have generally found that those who had read it, agreed with me in their estimate of the singular power of mind and conception which it developes. I should also add conception, uther than execution for the story might, perhaps, have been developed with greater advantage. Among those whose opinions agreed with mine upon this story, I could mention some very high names; but it is not necessary, nor indeed of any use, for every one must judge according to his own feelings. I merely refer the reader to the original story, that he may see to what extent I have borrowed from it; and em not unwilling that he should find much greater pleasure in perusing it than the drama which is founded upon its contents.
