Book Complete Poems

Download or read book Complete Poems written by Cecil Day-Lewis and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-03-31 with total page 844 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Together with Auden, Spender and MacNeice, C. Day Lewis was one of the leading young poets who in the 1930s broke away from the poetic establishment of those days. Day Lewis started writing poetry very young and, despite an active career which embraced schoolmastering , journalism, publishing, academic lecturing and the writing of detective stories, his devotion to poetry never wavered. Always prolife, he continued to write to the end of his days, so that when he died in 1972, having held the Chair of Poetry at Oxford from 1951 and 1956 and having been appointed Poet Laureate in 1968, he left behind a very large and varied body of work. Here, for the first time, are all the poems Day Lewis wrote, including the vers d'occasion which have never previously appeared in book form and a number of works which have only been published in a limited edition before now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential selection of one of the most important twentieth-century creative movements Black Mountain College had an explosive influence on American poetry, music, art, craft, dance, and thought; it’s hard to imagine any other institution that was so utopian, rebellious, and experimental. Founded with the mission of creating rounded, complete people by balancing the arts and manual labor within a democratic, nonhierarchical structure, Black Mountain was a crucible of revolutionary literature. Although this artistic haven only existed from 1933 to 1956, Black Mountain helped inspire some of the most radical and significant midcentury American poets. This anthology begins with the well-known Black Mountain Poets—Charles Olson, Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan, and Denise Levertov—but also includes the artist Josef Albers and the musician John Cage, as well as the often overlooked women associated with the college, M. C. Richards and Hilda Morley.

Book Selected Poems

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jibanananda Das
  • Publisher : Penguin Books India
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 9780143100263
  • Pages : 108 pages

Download or read book Selected Poems written by Jibanananda Das and published by Penguin Books India. This book was released on 2006 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jibanananda Das' lyricism is unparalleled in Bengali literature. His early poems are vivid, eloquent celebrations of the beauty of Bengal; his later works, written in the 1940s and 50s, are darker, comments on political issues and current affairs like the Second World War, the Bengal Famine of '43 and Hindu - Muslim riots at the time of Partition. Born in 1899, Jibanananda belonged to a group of poets who tried to shake off Tagore's poetic influence. While he is best known for poetry that reveals a deep love for nature and rural landscapes, tradition and history, Jibanananda is also strikingly urban, and introspective, his work centring on themes of loneliness, depression and death. He was a master of word-images, and his unique poetic idiom drew on tradition but was startlingly new.

  • Pages : 707 pages

Download or read book Collected Poems written by C. K. Williams and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2014-09-09 with total page 707 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collected Poems brings together nearly four decades of C. K.Williams's work: more than four hundred poems that, though remarkable in their variety, have in common Williams's distinctive outlook—restless, passionate, dogged, and uncompromising in the drive to find words for the truth about life as we know it today. Williams's rangy, elastic lines are measures of thought, and in these pages we watch them unfold from his confrontational early poems through the open, expansive Tar and With Ignorance. His voice is both cerebral and muscular, capable of both the eightline poems of Flesh and Blood and the inward soundings of A Dream of Mind—and of both together in the award-winning recent books Repair and The Singing. These poems feel spontaneous, individual, and directly representative of the experience of which they sing; open to life, they chafe against summary and conclusion. Few poets leave behind them a body of work that is global in its ambition and achievement. C. K. Williams is one of them.

Book Grandfather s Mandolin

Book excerpt: Poetry. Jewish Studies. GRANDFATHER'S MANDOLIN; by Fran Markover; is a collection of poems deeply rooted in family and what has come before. David Keplinger notes that "in these poems languages and names and articles of clothing seem to have lives; hats are thought to be alive; and names deserve elegies and memorials because they are breathing things that can pass away from this world; if we do not take care. Poem by poem; Markover creates a rich landscape of lives remembered; honored and loved."

Book excerpt: "Through more than a dozen collections, C.D. Wright pushed the bounds of imagination as she explored desire, loss and physical sensation. Her posthumously published book, ShallCross features seven poem sequences that show her tremendous range in style and approach. As she considers, among other topics, some dark intuitions about human nature, she also nudges readers to question who is telling the story and where one’s thought can lead."—The Washington Post "Wright gets better with each book, expanding the reach of her art; it seems it could take in anything."—Publishers Weekly "Wright belongs to a school of exactly one."—New York Times Book Review "C.D. Wright is entirely her own poet, a true original."—The Gettysburg Review In a turbulent world, C.D. Wright evokes a rebellious and dissonant ethos with characteristic genre-bending and expanding long-form poems. Accessing journalistic writing alongside filmic narratives, Wright ranges across seven poetic sequences, including a collaborative suite responding to photographic documentation of murder sites in New Orleans. ShallCross shows plain as day that C.D. Wright is our most thrilling and innovative poet. From "Obscurity and Elegance": Whether or not the park was safe she was going in. A study concluded, for a park to be successful there had to be women. The man next to the monument must have broken away from her. Perhaps years before. That the bond had been carnal is obvious. He said he was just out clearing his head… C.D. Wright (1949-2016) taught at Brown University for decades and published over a dozen works of poetry and prose, including One With Others, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award and was nominated for a National Book Award; One Big Self: An Investigation; and Rising Falling Hovering. Among her many honors are the Griffin International Poetry Prize and a MacArthur Fellowship.
