Book Visions of Venice in Shakespeare

Download or read book Visions of Venice in Shakespeare written by Dr Laura Tosi and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-28 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the growing critical relevance of Shakespeare's two Venetian plays and a burgeoning bibliography on both The Merchant of Venice and Othello, few books have dealt extensively with the relationship between Shakespeare and Venice. Setting out to offer new perspectives to a traditional topic, this timely collection fills a gap in the literature, addressing the new historical, political and economic questions that have been raised in the last few years. The essays in this volume consider Venice a real as well as symbolic landscape that needs to be explored in its multiple resonances, both in Shakespeare's historical context and in the later tradition of reconfiguring one of the most represented cities in Western culture. Shylock and Othello are there to remind us of the dark sides of the myth of Venice, and of the inescapable fact that the issues raised in the Venetian plays are tremendously topical; we are still haunted by these theatrical casualties of early modern multiculturalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: '[The text] significantly expands upon the [existing] body of scholarship to argue persuasively that Crabb Robinson was the most important pioneering comparatist during the Romantic period. [...] Hunnekuhl‟s tightly-woven monograph opens the door for further inquiry into other areas of Robinson‟s early reading, writing and social interactions. [...] Future scholarship in these and other areas in the early life of one of the most important diarists and commentators on British life and thought in the nineteenth century will now be able to build upon the solid foundation laid by Philipp Hunnekuhl.' • ISBN : 0300154488
  • Pages : 395 pages

Download or read book Victorian Bloomsbury written by Rosemary Ashton and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-14 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Bloomsbury is now associated with Virginia Woolf and her early-twentieth-century circle of writers and artists, the neighborhood was originally the undisputed intellectual quarter of nineteenth-century London. Drawing on a wealth of untapped archival resources, Rosemary Ashton brings to life the educational, medical, and social reformists who lived and worked in Victorian Bloomsbury and who led crusades for education, emancipation, and health for all. Ashton explores the secular impetus behind these reforms and the humanitarian and egalitarian character of nineteenth-century Bloomsbury. Thackeray and Dickens jostle with less famous characters like Henry Brougham and Mary Ward. Embracing the high life of the squares, the nonconformity of churches, the parades of shops, schools, hospitals and poor homes, this is a major contribution to the history of nineteenth-century London.

Book The Victorian Diary

Download or read book The Victorian Diary written by Anne-Marie Millim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her examination of neglected diaristic texts, Anne-Marie Millim expands the field of Victorian diary criticism by complicating the conventional notion of diaries as mainly private sources of biographical information. She argues that for Elizabeth Rigby Eastlake, Henry Crabb Robinson, George Eliot, George Gissing, John Ruskin, Edith Simcox and Gerard Manley Hopkins, the exposure or publication of their diaries was a real possibility that they either coveted or feared. Millim locates the diary at the intersection of the public and private spheres to show that well-known writers and public figures of both sexes exploited the diary's self-reflexive, diurnal structure in order to enhance their creativity and establish themselves as authors. Their object was to manage, rather than to indulge or repress, their emotions for the purposes of perfecting their observational and critical skills. Reading these diaries as literary works in their own right, Millim analyses their crucial role in the construction of authorship. By relating these Victorian writers' diaries to their publications and to contemporary works of cultural criticism, Millim shows the multifarious ways in which diaristic practices, emotional management and professional output corresponded to experiences of the literary marketplace and to nineteenth-century codes of propriety.
