Book Studies in Indo Muslim History by S H Hodivala Volume II

Download or read book Studies in Indo Muslim History by S H Hodivala Volume II written by Sanjay Garg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the field of medieval Indian historiography, an eight-volume magnum opus, History of India as Told by Its Own Historians, by Sir Henry Myers Elliot (1808-53) and the editor-compiler of his posthumous papers, John Dowson (1820-81), was published from London between 1867 and 1877. These landmark volumes continue to retain their popularity even nearly hundred and fifty years later, and scholars still learn from and conduct their research on the basis of this work. However, an enterprise of this scale and magnitude was bound to suffer from some serious shortcomings. An eminent Indian scholar, S.H. Hodivala undertook the daunting task of annotating Elliot and Dowson’s volumes and worked through all the new material, selecting or criticizing and adding his own suggestions where previous comments did not exist or appeared unsuitable. The first volume of Hodivala’s annotated Studies, was published in 1939, while the second was published posthumously in 1957. Over the years, while the work of Elliot and Dowson has seen many reprints, and is even available online now, Hodivala’s volumes have receded into obscurity. A new edition is presented here for the first time. Hodivala also published critical commentaries on 238 of about 2000 entries included in another very famous work, Hobson-Jobson (London, 1886) by Sir Henry Yule (1820-89) and Arthur Coke Burnell (1840-82). These have also been included in the present edition. These volumes are thus aimed at serving as an indispensable compendium of both, Elliot and Dowson’s, and for Yule and Burnell’s excellent contributions of colonial scholarship. At the same time these would also serve as a guide for comparative studies and critical appreciation of historical texts. Please note: Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka

Book Selections From Calcutta Gazettes of the Years 1784 1785 1786 1787 and 1788

Download or read book Selections From Calcutta Gazettes of the Years 1784 1785 1786 1787 and 1788 written by W. S. Seton-Karr and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From Calcutta Gazettes of the Years 1784, 1785, 1786, 1787, and 1788: Showing the Political and Social Condition of the English in India, Eighty Years Ago The extracts of which this book is made up have been taken from certain volumes of a weekly paper designated "the Calcutta Gazette and Oriental Advertiser." These volumes were discovered by the President of the Record Commission, in the pursuance of the objects for which the Commission was constituted, amongst the Records of the Home Department. The first volume commences in the spring of the year 1784, or in the last year of the administration of Warren Hastings, and the series continues down to the present century, with two gaps, in the years 1789 and 1792, for both of which the volumes of the Gazette are unfortunately missing. Some observations seem necessary to explain the nature and origin of these Gazettes, as well as the plan which has been pursued in making the present extracts. The first number of the Calcutta Gazette and Oriental Advertiser appears to have been published on the 4th of March 1784, and on the 11th ditto, or in the next issue of the paper, it is stated that the Governor General and Council had permitted Mr. F. Gladwin to publish a Gazette under their sanction and authority. Heads of Offices were therefore required to issue all such advertisements or publications as might be ordered on the part of the Hon'ble Company, through the channel of this paper. Book excerpt: The history of philosophy aims to give a connected account of the different attempts which have been made to solve the problem of existence or to render intelligible to us our world of experience. It is the author of the development of reasoned human thought from its earliest beginnings down to the present time; not a mere chronological enumeration and exposition of philosophical theories, but a study of these in their relation to one another, the times in which they are produced, and the thinkers by whom they are offered. While every system of thought is more or less dependent on the civilization in which it arises, the character of preceding systems, and the personality of its author, it, in turn, exercise a potent influence on the conceptions and institutions of its own and succeeding ages. The history of philosophy must, therefore, endeavour to insert each world-view in its proper setting, to understand it as a part of an organic whole, to connect it with the intellectual, political, moral, social, and religious factors of its present, past, and future. It must also attempt to trace the line of progress in the history of human speculation: show how the mental attitude called philosophy arises, how the different problems and the solutions that are offered provoke new questions and answers, and what advance has been made, on the different stages, towards reaching the goal. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study reinterprets a crucial period (1870s-1920s) in the history of women's rights, focusing attention on a core contradiction at the heart of early feminist theory. At a time when white elites were concerned with imperialist projects and civilizing missions, progressive white women developed an explicit racial ideology to promote their cause, defending patriarchy for "primitives" while calling for its elimination among the "civilized." By exploring how progressive white women at the turn of the century laid the intellectual groundwork for the feminist social movements that followed, Louise Michele Newman speaks directly to contemporary debates about the effect of race on current feminist scholarship. "White Women's Rights is an important book. It is a fascinating and informative account of the numerous and complex ties which bound feminist thought to the practices and ideas which shaped and gave meaning to America as a racialized society. A compelling read, it moves very gracefully between the general history of the feminist movement and the particular histories of individual women."--Hazel Carby, Yale University
